I don't own one but Flock Audio had a digital patch bay that is fully controllable. You don't have to recable you can switch any out board gear onto any channel even change the order. And it's USB, And Madi I believe. You might be one of the only guys I know virtually that has a set up big enough for the more expensive of the two units.

Loving these videos. I know I started late and I’m playing catch up but it’s like reading a good book where your mind is thinking of where it’s gonna go and how it’s gonna end. I wanna jump to the end but seeing(hearing) the thought process is great. Makes me take one video at a time. Having been in the audio biz for 40 years the art of patching and setting up was always my strong point because it was fun. Thinking of every scenario is fun. Keeps my mind young! Onto the next day 4 video!

I'm not sure if you figured out the main out inserts already, but what I did on my mixing board... I never use the main out inserts. My main outs goes directly to hardware bus processors (using a patchbay), that signal goes back to the daw (to print track, maybe with additional plugin processing) and the output from the print track goes back to the mixer using an external input on the board (mostly named "2-track"). 99% of my time I'm monitoring the 2-track input, not the main outs of the board.

It is a magnification console and I am a bit jealous. You will have years of fun with this beast. Yes it has Solo in Place and much more. This from the manual: Solo master and meters Comprehensive Solo controls provide choice of Solo-In-Front with Mix Balance, Solo-In-Place for Large, Small & Group Faders and PFL options. Solo Level, Solo Clear and Red Light Switch complete the available options. Peak Hold Selection plus Peak Clear for all console LED Meters. Mix Meter Follow Monitor Source option increases main mix meter flexibility. Independent DIM controls for Channel and Monitor Inputs to reduce meter distractions in busy sessions. Best of luck with it! Carry on. Tod

Hey Hey! You're getting there! :-) If you get an extra 8 i/o then you may be better routing those outputs to the dedicated FX returns so you'd have access to the bus routing for the FX. Remember, you can't route both the long and short fader on a channel. It's one or the other. Also, I think the mix insert send and return is pre the bus compressor and can't be moved post. Or the other way round. I'd have to check the manual. The stereo groups and buses are a bit strange as they are not quite internally linked. You have to make a physical connection from dsub to dsub on the back or have them normalled on a patchbay. That's why you can't hear anything when doing the bus routing. I'm sure you know all that by now anyway.

Yeah, Day 2 was the day we made major progress on all of that...at this point in the video we're still on Day 1, and there has already been a Day 3... We're not afraid of showing the process, including the mistakes we made and the process of working out how to make everything work...SSL's manual is good, but could be better... As far as IO, we WANT to add more but at this point we're determined to work with what we have...at some point we need to stop setting up and actually start mixing on the thing...

@@MixingMusicAnalog I do realise this was a couple of weeks ago now but I can't resist throwing popcorn and shouting at the screen "No! not that way, it's this way!" I'll try and refrain for the moment until the series finishes. :-) There's a couple of things I find frustrating about the functionality of the console and that is not being able to switch the drive circuit into the monitor path for mixing and the LF to SF option. What appears on the SF is a direct copy of the LF and the SF insert isn't active. I don't know what you're supposed to do with that! Parallel compression if you send the SF signal to a bus perhaps. You can do that with the LF signal though. I need to look into that further and contact SSL myself. What other 8 i/o unit are you thinking of getting?

isn't there a master insert button on the console to select it? I suppose not. Also: pans, if you use the direct outs to the daw as well as the master 2bus stereo mix 'print track' then you can either have stereo with ssl console panning, or up the centre mono.(but reaper is the only daw I know that lets you have any 1 - 32 channel as left if its a stereo track,,,, i.e. studio one only currently lets you have 1 3 5 7 9 as left (incase you had eg. kick mono 1, snare stereo 2 3.......... it doesn't let you ... Interesting watching these - thanks :) Massive learning head scratching! I had the same issues with my 2x8816 summing units with panning using the direct outs, wondering for ages why I cant pan ... ... ok well pan only would work if printing a stereo track... you can pan stereo pairs and print those it.b. and keep monos up the centre no pan. (can even just say each is stereo as a rule, and for the epicentre monos can always double up for parallel mono eq Cool mixer :) BTW, if I were you maybe Id like to get a ssl sigma to use for the automation for each analog fader after the computer. :) Thanks again for sharing with us :) Its quite confusing hooking it all up lol :). my plan for my ssl hybrid rack of xracks , is to print what I capture i.t.b. then mix i.t.b. through ssl sigma summing (that said, don't know if ill be losing out on quality by printing and then going back out to summing... massive head scratching!

one thing I was thinking of buying for my mini duality ssl console in a rack i.e. loads of x racks (32 channels) was I was considering the Tascam da6400 it allows you to record backup 32 channels @ 96k 24 bit and has dsubs in 32channels. Always something to think about, it does have a sound though I think, I know the Tascam da3000 (stereo recorder) has a sound i.e. its not totally transparent (please correct me someone if im wrong). I think those direct outputs should be recorded off as backup (im no pro yet but I DO THINK THAT the inspiration and magic in the moment should be captured; then maybe mixed in the box with plugs after? So many ways of setting this stuff up! My plan with my 32 channels of ssl x rack that feed 2xneve8816swithfaders (32neve faders) is to use ssl sigma to automate those faders of the Neve 8816 (Neve 8804 fader packx2) o.t.b. and also then have the direct outputs from ssl sigma automation to then feed patch bays where I can either 'normal' send direct outs from sigma via dsubs to patchbay to send to external gear eg. all vocal to api 550 eq or 'half-normalise' (i.e. parallel) send direct outs of sigma automation of my hybrid Neve drive ssl x rack rack 32 channels to a distressor etc. I also think if you have a half-normalised patchbay then you can send off the direct outputs to the daw as backup stereo stems (and mono upcentrenopan stems) whilst also sending off parallel to eg. feed side chain inputs on dynamics for ssl dynamics gear. ! :) I would love engineers on 'mix with the master' to talk about this kinda stuff but so far no-one talks about the setting up of it just the mixing process i.t.b with any outboard. Really interesting watching these videos so thanks! :)

I even like the idea of getting the console mix rocking, then sending all the tracks off patchbay parallel (half-normalised) to inject more energy into stuff going into eg distressor etc, but EVEN send them to a different summing unit with different pans to really thicken it! the are just my crazy ideas that Ive yet to do! :)

Love these how to ....In my opinion You are overthinking, the template, its not needed Ive been running a hybrid for 15 years on an SSL 4056, WITH LOTS OF OUTBOARD, you have no need to print the audio back into DAW unless you wanna send processed audio somewhere, Of course you'll print back a mix which you've figured out....here's the short and skinny, (no Pun) hook the direct outs to Console inputs from interfaces 1 to 1 etc, all the way to 32, same with inputs from SSL to patchbay for flexibility to patch around a bad channel, or what ever ( or Not) which allows you to just use the Track output assignments in DAW TO console for instance mine is set up FROM DAW TO SSL Channels, drums 1-12 then 13-14 Bass stereo, then 15-18 2 stereo GTR returns , 19-20 a stereo for Perc / misc, 21-24 2 stereos for Keys synths etc, ... 25 -26 -Lead Vox separate 27-30 BGV Grouped in DAW you can use small faders for FX Returns...either from Patchbay or DAW...then further routing on SSL to Center section Groups to be able to control mix from sweet spot...Heres a tip watch any mix video with CLA his is also that way obviously much more gear than me but, its a suggestion!..Great Luck man...Im also in CT love to see your spot Dave
