Many guitar lessons fall into the 'give a man a fish' category. This, however, is a 'teach a man to fish' lesson and worth so much more. That it's based on a Gilmour classic is just a very big cherry on top. Excellent stuff, Brett. Thank you!

It was so great to hear you talk about David Gilmour almost exactly how I have talked about him. I belong to a classic rock facebook page in which people post classic rock songs- and people can make comments, along with the person who created the post. There are always people that will say this guitar player or band is better than that guitar player or band....and they will even expound on that by saying things like- this guitar player couldn't tie the shoes of that guitar player.( you get the picture). I absolutely hate that first of all...I always say to them...MUSIC IS NOT A COMPETITION ! I do prefer to listen to guitar players who play melodically and with feel -Like David G. People on the page will often bring up guitar players that can play lightning fast- a million notes a minute- I always come back and say that I prefer to listen to players who put some soul into their playing.

Just when you think he can't come up with yet another masterclass in CAGED, he goes and does it again. Bravo. 👏👏👏 Every single note broken down and put into crystal clear context. So much so, that you make it sound like the solo wrote itself. As if to say "well of course this note was the natural choice for this part of the solo". So glad I bought your course. Worth every cent and more. Thanks for all the additional free lessons you give us here too!

You just earned a subscription - I really like how you're demonstrating this. Most just show you a solo and if you're not savvy on chords/triads up the neck you have no idea what's really under your fingers. A fantastic tool to bring a lesson like this together is Mel Bay's Rhythm Guitar Chord System - it was the best 15 bucks I ever spent in my life. LOL

Just watching a guy play makes it hard to learn what he's really doing because the way they have their fingers hides the notes they are playing. Sometimes this is to mute strings they don't want to make sound, or sometimes like with Jimi Page he's setting up for the next chord by using unconventional fingering. A good teacher will show each note and what fingers are being used. I haven't wtched thuis yet but sounds like he takes the time to show whats often hard to see.

After 40 years of guitar playing I find that I practice just as much or more to perfect a Gilmour solo as I do some shredding EVH solo. David Gilmour is THE reason I became a guitarist. The smartest thing my teacher did when I 1st started playing was he taught me how to “play the guitar” before anything else. In other words, he let me explore how to physically play the instrument in my own natural way, using my fingers properly of course. Because he did that though, I was able to create my own style and “my own sound” if you will, which of course is very much based on Gilmour, with a lot of bending, and a lot of finger harmonics. So my style naturally became very melodic. Once that was 2nd nature, then we went back and I started learning and applied proper scaling, which then had my style naturally applied to it. For me, that’s the way to go. You can teach anyone structured scales but melody has to come naturally or it’s not really melody.

I say all that to also add I know ABSOLUTELY no music theory - so a lot of videos are lost on me because I don't know the language. That being said - I am ELATED to find I actually understood your explanations PERFECTLY - you managed to teach me some more advancements with my playing FINALLY taught/explained in a manner I could GET !!!! Great lesson. Where I get lost is what notes to use besides those that make up the chord. I have no issue using, bending or landing on the 1-3-5 etc… but between those notes gets tricky. I usually wind up using the major pentatonic of the chord I’m playing over, but if you do that, as you switch chords it often doesn’t sound like one coherent solo. It sounds like you are following the chords too much. Any suggestions?
@plusplus940
3 жыл бұрын
The safe bet would be to play the pentatonic notes for the key of the whole song, not switching the scale per chord. So if it’s in D major, you can “safely” play any notes in D major at any time. If you switch to the major scale of a different chord, it will include notes that sound dissonant over the tune (sometimes even if they’re in the chord being played). Hope it helps!

At least Brett is not teaching shredding,,, which isn't Musical. David Gilmour: I'll will give him a listen to. I know he's not a Jeff Beck but he's kinda what's "IN" right now? Perhaps I'm a bit spoiled..But I'm flexible with my playing. Never too old to learn....

And a lot of these decisions are made because he SINGS his solos while composing them - he has said as much. I don't think he's using theory or thinking along those lines; he's just emoting what is coming to his head, and then he figures it out based upon his knowledge of the fretboard. Just because something is "correct" theoretically, doesn't mean it's any good. That's MY theory.
@BrettPapa
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree though this video isn't saying that he is using the method I talked about this is just to show why the notes sound good and a simple way for those who like shapes to start to use them to become more melodic. Whatever theory works for you stick with that everyone is different. He also composes a majority of his solos by recording a ton of takes and then piecing together the phrases he likes.
@fathuman
3 жыл бұрын
I would challenge the notion that one's approach has to be theory-based OR purely ear-based, and advocate a hybrid of the two. For example theory is a great way to START a solo, as it gets you out of that blank page panic, so you can go straight for some chord tones...but after that your ear can get 'inspired' to take over from there. And back and forth and so on.

I may learn the solo that way but I don't focus on the chords being played. This is a great teaching and plan to start looking at all of the chord progressions I practice and jam to and looking at chord shapes to improvise to instead of always looking thru the lens of the scale patterns I've already learned. So essentially Dave's solos are CAGED arpeggios and full bendings

I was a singer until I had hearing loss in my left ear in 2008 and got discouraged. I’m now picking up a guitar again after all this time and this opened up my mind so much. I don’t know what caged is, but I do love This song and solo. You are a GREAT teacher and make it seem so simple. I learned so much so far and I’m only 1/2 way through the video. Thank you so much. I have so much gratitude in my heart right now. I believe again that it’s possible for me like I did when I was a kid trying the just learn the pentatonic scale. Just this one lesson and I see the neck differently. I’ve been wanting to learn all my triads and chord shapes. This is a great video thank you!
