I'm easy. I carry a G.I. canteen cookset with stove. The stove works with Esbit tablets, with wood, or with a Trangia alcohol stove. Mine will also work with a canister stove that has the detached burner. The last thing I want is to set a pot on top of an alcohol burner. I've never seen one that's stable. The G.I. stove solves this problem nicely. I've tried all sorts of new cook kits, but I've always gone back to the G.I. kit. Along with the G.I. mess kit and a second nesting cup and lid,, it does everything I need to do, and more, and in a very confined space. Not only can I use any kind of fuel source out there, I can also cook just for myself, or for up to three people. I simply haven't found anything else as versatile or compact, especially since my idea of cooking often involves a lot more than just boiling water and dropping in dehydrated "food". I guess I had to learn the hard way, but I could have saved several hundred dollars by sticking to the same system I started with decades ago.

A cool hack I came up with for the Evernew alcohol stove, use 3 long nails or screws place them in the small notches in the bottom for a makeshift tripod pot holder. That is if you don't have a steel or titanium cross beam or firebox.

I use vitamin tubes for my meths, they hold about two and a half trangia fills each. Easy to store in mag pouches away from the rest of your kit and a nurofen syringe if I have fuel left over.

Good stuff, lots of information with advice for different needs. I particularly like your Evernew set though, as I like to go day walking with a light pack, but also be able to brew up. That whole kit is lighter than my current stainless mug alone(175g) which with a Trangia burner a triangle and fuel makes my seupt a real heavyweight at over 400g.

A great video packed with very useful information, clear and concise. I prefer stainless steel and my go to brew and cook set is the BCB Crusader Cook system which is very versatile as can be seen on my videos, it is also bombproof but a tad heavy. I have modified the cooker by adding stove/fire rope that improves the burn time of mets plus I use a penny stove with the system that weighs about 20 grams. I have serious reservations about the safety of aluminium with regard to health so personally steer clear. I haven't investigated titanium properly but intend to do so. I have subscribed. Thank you :)

Yup, I use a Windmaster (not as light as the BRS3000 but more efficient, better in wind, piezo igniter) with a heat exchanger pot if I want fast boil times and max fuel efficiency. For cooking full dishes solo, I prefer to use the Snow Peak Trek 900 titanium cookset. It's a little frying pan and 900ml pot combo with graduations for easy measurements, comes in at 6.2oz. Trek 900 fits a 250g canister, Soto Windmaster, pot scrub and lighter with room to spare for a small pack towel. That's my little "not-quite-ultralight" setup for cooking eggs, meat, rice... you name it.

Great video and thank you for taking the time. I have many of the same setups. I've been going more and more NOT solo, and NOT all that far to hike also. Therefore I'm usually using my Bushcraft Essentials because it's so versatile with natural materials I find or the Trangia etc. I love my Jetboil but use it same as you typically...and the gas stoves are great as well. I usually poach my eggs just because it's so easy on the clean up LOL. I do need to get your cross trivet stand for the alcohol stoves. hunt often and am almost never doing the ultra light minimalist A.T. anymore and I like to eat so.. Im using the freezer bags mostly when I"m trying to be light vs eating the meat I harvest from hunting etc. Anyway, great stuff thanks again bro!

For windscreens, try a search on ebay for titanium windscreen. Very thin sheets of Titanium. I cut mine to fit particular burners in height. Some comes with push-buttons, others I use paperclips to hold them together. They roll up in small and insert into small nylon bags, weighs next to nothing and takes up little or no space as such.

Very light, rolls up inside my cooking pots, but not as durable as titanium. I'm also keen to try the Caldera Cone System to see how that works out, but looks a little too bulky for my liking.

Yeah, it's a total minefield getting kit you're 100% happy with and then that changes again depending where you're going, what you're doing and for how long. (Ironically) I would have saved a lot of money by staying off of YT and sticking to tried and tested kit, being blissfully unaware of much of the new stuff knocking around. You often find you revert to (variations of) kit you're used to anyway. I'll be trying out titanium (cook pot) for the first time this year and will be curious to see if it's worth the extra cash!

Really interesting breakdown on a wide variety of kit options. I've also settled on the 750ml pot size as the best all rounder for single mug use. Great for hot drinks and cooking both canned and dehydrated food choices. 750 ml is perfect for a boiled portion of pasta or rice with added food (e.g. curry) added in after and then cooked in. I'm always keen to use cheaper food products from the supermarket rather than expensive MREs. ;-)

@simonh6371
2 жыл бұрын
Meths or denatured alcohol as it's known in the USA, or metho in Oz. Don't use anything else in a Trangia or similar designed alcohol stove, especially not petrol or even white spirits, it's dangerous as it isn't just a cup which burns the fuel on the surface, the walls are hollow and pressure builds up inside them which forces meths vapours to the ring of holes, giving a jet effect. Perfectly safe with meths but with other fuels you'll get big flare ups and it will burn too hot and get out of control. I know from experience.

Nice video! I just looking at the LiTech Trek Kettle as well and was wondering if the larger canister would fit (I've never used one that size) and now I know. They also make a coffee press for it BTW. A couple questions: 1. How well do you think that non stick coating will hold up over time (with proper care of course)? 2: Do you think 2 eggs will fit in that pan? -Thanks
@gordonsgreatoutdoors7523
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, 1. I think it will cope well over time, it seems to be solid (compared to the ultralight non-stick coating on Evernew pans) and I'd say you've nothing to worry about as long as you don't scrape it away with metal cutlery. 2. Yes I'd say 2 medium eggs would fit but don't expect 2 separate eggs at the end :) Hope this helps.

@gordonsgreatoutdoors7523

Sadly can't find them on ebay anymore. It could work but you'll have to keep in mind that it could change shape over time due to the heat (not that there is much heat output). Even Trangia stoves leak fuel and they have a rubber seal too! My advice is to not keep any fuel in your burner at all really.

Hi Gordon, this is a very nice video; thanks for sharing. I am sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if I could ask you some follow-up questions. I am currently shopping around for a 1-2 person cookset and have my eyes set on the Esbit alcohol stove+trekking cookset and the Primus Trek kettle+pan, both of which you cover here. I think I prefer the Esbit with the stove and windscreen and fitting pots, but was wondering if the non-stick Primus pan you show here might be compatible. Do you know if the Primus pan is similar in size to the small Esbit pot? Could it be used as a top for the large .9 lt Esbit pot? From online stores it seems that the Primus pan could be a bit wider, which makes me think you could stack the Esbit kit on/inside the Primus frying pan and that way have 2 pots, a small pan, and the alcohol stove all in one compact kit. Have you tried this? Any feedback or comments on these ideas would be greatly appreciated! =) Cheers,
@gordonsgreatoutdoors7523
8 жыл бұрын
+nerdsathome hi buddy, sadly I don't have the Esbit anymore otherwise I'd be happy to try and fit them together for you. Sorry you wrote such a detailed question but I can't help you much for this question I'm afraid, but it seems like it's a valid nesting solution! Let me know if you want me to measure the Primus pan as I still have that pot! You could always order the items and get delivered to your local store (double check with the store) and try it out before you purchase? Or you could get a refund if it doesn't work out. Again, best check with your local stores etc. I would personally go for the Primus as very robust and can use it a bit more with heat sources. Plus none stick! Not as light but worth the weight!
@nerdsathome
8 жыл бұрын
+Gordon's Great Outdoors Thank you for the prompt reply and your suggestions, they have helped me with my decision. I like the Esbit because it comes with the stove and stand/windscreen and they are a very snug fit; but from your comments and other information I've found online it seems the Primus kit might be more practical (grooved bottom? non-stick, etc). It is not a bad idea to order both and then return one like you suggest. As of now, the main advantage I see in the Esbit is the snug-fitting stand (although I'm a bit skeptical about how well it works as a windscreen), but some alcohol stoves come with a little stand and I could always buy or make a screen. Anyway...sorry for the long response and thanks again! Cheers,
@gordonsgreatoutdoors7523
8 жыл бұрын
+nerdsathome No problem at all, glad I could help! From what I remember the windscreen on the Esbit system was very poor anyway, it let lots of air in on the sides and think it was more a stand rather than a windscreen. A simple one you can buy online is fine for most your needs, or make your own out of a turkey roasting tinfoil thingy. :) Let me know how you get on :)

True but I do what the Dutch Army does so one canteen with stainless cup (same as US 44 ptn canteen & cup) and one of the Dutch mess tins - like the British but stainless not alu. Like we did in the army I use the mess tin as a washbasin too in camp. I pimped it up though with a civvy made copy of the old unicorn-like mess tin lid/frying pans, there is a NATO serial number for them so they were on issue (to somebody anyway) but I never ever saw anyone with one in 5 years service. All the expensive titanium pots and the jetboil system you see here which the ultralight backpackers are into, are no good for any kind of cooking really, just for boiling water. With my setup I can boil water, reheat MREs, or even cook from scratch like making simple casseroles or frying food.
@pedroclaro7822

True but I use a diy version of the Swiss army volcano stove - large dog food can fits my Nalgene inside perfectly, and a small 700ml SS Cup flipped upside down on top of it all. Poked holes into the can and it serves as a nice long stove/chimney getting very little soot - which is easy to clean if you spray dish soap under pots beforehand. It lives in my bug out bag but I’ve hiked miles and miles with that. For long term storage - oil is needed to prevent the can from rusting, or barbecue high temp paint works too.
