Not really. It is often hard for engineers to become architects. Given that the job is so very different an engineering background is NOT always advantage It’s like saying working as a flight attendant will make someone a better airplane pilot The jobs are so different being good at someone else’s career is not necessarily an advantage.

Hi Pruyesh, The technical skills are different for each kind of cloud architect. Meaning those who focus on infrastructure need a different focus then those who more focus on security. So when we build cloud architects we have to look at their starting point, goal career on the cloud. Then we can do a gap analysis between current skills and needed skills for the role. On Monday we will be hosting our free how to get your first cloud architect job. You can attend the live zoom session and we will answer any questions you will have. Well it depends upon one’s goals One can start as architect, move to senior architect, to principal architect and stay there. Or a cloud architect / solutions architect can move into an enterprise architect role Or a good cloud architect with strong business acumen could go form cloud architect to a director of architecture then move to a VP or CIO role. It’s all based upon one’s goals and how the focus their careers

I've been struggling to find a definition of each of these roles and how they differ, so this was helpful. What would you call the position between the Cloud Engineer and Solutions Architect? I have a client who is in a Solutions Architect role, often performs the roles of the Cloud Architect, but misses the hands on work of an Engineer. They're more than the "guy with headphones on in the back room", has seen a lot, offers solutions, can be "customer facing" when needed (whiteboards and all), but doesn't "just want to talk about the solutions", and finds satisfaction of problem solving and actually building out the solution. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks again for this video.

Hi Red Cloud Solutions. All architect roles are really customer facing roles. It’s that communication skill, business acumen, executive presence combined with tech that makes an architect an architect. But there is one architect role that’s mostly an engineer. That’s the technical architect. It’s more of a very senior engineer. These people tend to be very technical and do far less presentations, document writing etc.

Great "reference model" for understanding the differences! This is the best career channel for any Cloud Eng/Arch to watch. I'm 10 years in my Cloud career now. The different roles have changes in focus for skillset and demands. I've seen each of these distinct roles in multiple large companies (sometimes with different titles). However, remember that many companies make up their own unique job titles that won't match this. So viewers - don't be confused, just understand that you can plan your career for this category or type and watch all the open job descriptions. i.e. some will call a job "Cloud Architect" but it's really just a senior Cloud Engineer. Or "Cloud Architect" and they mean Sr Software Developer in cloud. Then after not following the industry general terms, they complain they don't get good candidates for the role. It's only "your problem" in the sense you have to deal with it (not miss any good opportunities, and don't get pulled into the wrong role).
@GoCloudArchitects

Thank you. One funny thing about tech careers is some companies really do make up their own job titles. But it’s usually more the funny job descriptions which often have nothing to do with the job. I’ve been an architect for over 25 years now and we want people to be successful. It saddens me to see people work so hard to learn the skills for someone else’s job, but not to actually have the skills for the job they desire. So we make a lot of videos on what is a cloud architect and how to become a cloud architect. We want people that desire an architect job to know the actual skills they need to get hired. We were very happy to see CIO magazine write a great article on what is a cloud architect and what do we actually do. www.cio.com/article/221831/what-is-a-cloud-architect-a-vital-role-for-success-in-the-cloud.html/amp/

No. The cloud architect and a solution architect do the same thing in every company except AWS. A solution architect designs a single vendors like AWS. Or at Cisco they design across Cisco products. A cloud architect designs across multi cloud architectures (private clouds, hybrid clouds, multi clouds and hybrid multi clouds) The cloud architect is even closer to the business as they have to do more stakeholder management across the business, cloud vendors, security vendors, networking vendors and more. That’s also why the cloud architect salary is higher. It’s a bigger version of the role.

Hmm. AWS places Cloud and Solutions on different levels of hierarchy kzitem.info/news/bejne/y6aQqZtqrHWrkqQ than you. They claim Solution(s) architect to have higher level of abstraction, which (to me personally) sounds more natural. Cloud Architect can be fine knowing just a single cloud/vendor well. Not the case for Solution(s) Architects.
@GoCloudArchitects
8 ай бұрын
Hi Ivan, All companies have their own names for their own positions. AWS is one of the many tens of thousands of employers who hire cloud architects In most companies cloud architects design the multi cloud solution. Solutions architects design on a single cloud. Now 98 percent of end customers use more then one cloud. Thats why in most companies the cloud architect its a bigger role. The cloud architect sits in between the enterprise architects and the solutions architect. This means the cloud architect will lead the solutions architects from various vendors, AWS, Azure, Cisco, Microsoft, Security vendors like Palo Alto to design the customers multi-cloud architectures AWS is the exception in their naming. At AWS the cloud architect isn't really an architect at all. Its more of an engineering role with some technical design. Like a cross between an engineer and architect.

Great video , although I would question the definitions of Cloud v Solutions architect. A solutions architect is not necessarily single vendor at all. Yes of course an SA working at AWS or Azure is going to be vendor specific but an SA working in an MSP that offers multi vendor solutions is likely to be fluent in multiple cloud vendor offerings, as well as more legacy tech like on-premise, traditional networking, more modern hybrid solutions etc etc. I would say an SA usually has , and needs, broad knowledge and experience covering much more than a single cloud vendor. A Cloud Architect on the other hand I see as being much like the SA I describe above but with a focus on Cloud (which again can be multi vendor or not) and is less involved in the broader spectrum of technologies outlined in the SA role - so not focused on the on premises, hardware, physical networking etc. Of course the truth is that the role is actually whatever the employer defines it to be and what you end up actually doing, so there are probably lots of examples that will match both you and my definitions. So Im not saying you are wrong, just challenging it a bit - Im a Solutions Architect so it is my role to ask questions and challenge things :-) . At least we aren't trying to define DevOps, which at this stage has no true meaning in the real world.
@GoCloudArchitects
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. In my 25 years of working as various architects I can tell you that solutions architects in general are focused on one providers tech and a cloud architect or enterprise architect focused more on the total package. I have also coached people into these types of roles for 20 years and that’s their experience as well Also that’s what most hiring managers have told me they desire in these roles. All in all most of what we do is design, present and sell. And sure as a solution architect we do work with outside software and third party vendors but we don’t design their systems Now a cloud architect or enterprise architect will help the customer design their hybrid cloud (openstack vs nutanix) and will also design around multiple clouds But In the end it comes down to what tue company wants, or what you can sell your manager into what you want to do. With the right leadership skills, sales skills, business acumen, emotional intelligence we can help influence our managemnt into what we want to do as long as it benefits the company and it’s customers.

Simply takes out the complexity in the different job titles. Its sometimes embarrassing to admit that one simply wants a leg in with very little thought on necessarily taking this different functions into consideration. Thanks once again Mike.

Thanks for the great video! As many commenters already said - your videos are really a gem. I wanted to ask for advice. I would like to go into contracting/freelancing with Cloud technologies. I am currently aiming at getting the GCP Cloud Architect certification. Which role do you think is best fit for contracting/freelancing?

Hello what is the difference between solution architect as described in your video and azure or other cloud provider solutions architect? I'm developer with 10 years of experience and achieved several azure certification especially administrator associate (az-104). I will probably try to get the devops certification but I'd like try to also get the azure solution architect in the next 2 years. My professionnal goal in short term is to be software architect but with cloud solutions so I guess to achieve azure solutions architect is a good choice. What do you think about my path?
@GoCloudArchitects
3 жыл бұрын
Hi, These are industry terms as opposed to vendor terms. So a solution architect on aws will know aws services, a solution architect on azure will know azure services. While a cloud architect is more of someone who designs the end to end solution regardless of this provider. This same thing applies to network architect vs solution architects as well.

For my employeer, the "Solutions Architect" is basically what you described as Enterprise Architect. And its the most senior of the 2. They rank them as Data Architect > Cloud Architect > Solutions Architect, and Enterprise Architect is often very very non technical, and less prestigious (Ive seen similar on other firms as well). This is multi billion dollar consultant firm. For example, they ask this for Solutions Architects (Courses and evaluations) Focus on quality2 Focus on results2 People development1 Application Design2 Application Development1 Cloud Architecture Design2 Enterprise Application Architecture Design2 Information Security Management2 Monitoring of Technological Trends and Business Models2 Support changes / developments of the system2 Sustainable Development1 System Architecture Design2 They ask this for Cloud Architects. @@GoCloudArchitects yes but if based on the skills I provided. My assessment correct ?. How would you see within the skills I provided the Solution Architect ? More high level than the Cloud right ?

@@KaratePath these are the descriptions you gave not the normal architect descriptions. Your descriptions at what major tech companies like Cisco, IBM use but are specific to your company. The reason the enterprise architects earn more and are typically a higher level position is their business focus. It’s typically a more CXO level job. It’s also a director level position at most big tech companies. But honestly I have been an architect for decades and have seen some companies make their own definitions. Especially with solutions architects. Every company has their own definition and and they can be anything from a cell phone sales person to someone doing enterprise architecture.

@@KaratePath Well yes these roles get less and less technical as you move up the ranks. The prestige is not on being a great techie. The prestige is learning how to maximize the business with technology. That’s why the less technical roles pay more. But all of these roles are becoming more enterprise architect like, as the separation between architecture which is focused on the business, and engineering which is focused on the tech widens. The separation between architects and engineers will grow more with artificial intelligence and new technologies. When it comes to designing big picture you just need a team of people to get as deep.
