Or that "initial setup" includes the questions each was asked, which is more doubtful when they are 'asked quietly'. Janky - trying to hide the premise.
@cctomcat321
2 жыл бұрын
The initial setup is the 5 colored shapes you see on screen and the fact that one knows color while the other knows shape. Each "silence" is a "no", eliminating two places it could be under for both people. Like, say it were yellow, then one who knows what color would've immediately said yes the first time, and the only single color on the board was yellow. Since they both stayed silent, it was eliminated as a possibility. Same goes for the square being a one of a kind shape.

After reading the comments I think it’s appropriate to leave this here. The only way they both would know, after the host asks the third time, is if they both knew the other had known the missing piece of information. I think you guys misunderstand the problem. The problem isn't simple at all. Colin did only know the correct color and Shilpa only knew the correct shape. It doesn't make sense to say that Colin knew the colors of all objects. I can also tell you that it's extremely hard to do this in your head for anyone because of how our brain works. Our brain can only handle 3-4 short-term facts at once. And, given that there are so many different pieces of information here, it's really hard to figure this problem out instantaneously. You'll need at least several minutes to think it over and over again until the short-term details become strengthened into long-term memory.

Ok so I noticed an issue with this puzzle. I’m sure my observation is correct, but I seek to find others who also came up with this: The host asks if they know which shape the prize is beneath. We know it can’t be the yellow circle or blue square, because both Colin and Shilpa stay silent. The blue triangle should be eliminated, along with the blue square and yellow circle, because if it was the blue triangle, Colin would’ve said yes. Therefore, the prize can’t be under the blue triangle, square, or the yellow circle. So, there are 2 left shapes left; the teal circle and triangle, and Shilpa knows the shape. So why did the host have to ask 3 questions for Shilpa to know what shape the prize was hidden under? Shilpa should’ve known the moment the question was brought up.
@stephenfrancis3516
Жыл бұрын
Seems almost right to me - except for Shilpa to know the moment the question was brought up, she would have to know what Colin knows (that it can't be the blue triangle). This is the same for Colin with the green circle. Before any questions are asked, Colin knows the prize must be under either the green triangle or the green circle. Shilpa knows that it must be under one of the triangles. In other words, they could both eliminate the blue square and yellow circle before the first question, which I think is your point. After the first question is asked and neither of them answer, they can both eliminate the blue triangle and green circle (because if it was either of those, one of them would have said 'yes' at the first question). So they would both say 'yes' at the second question. This is assuming they're not allowed to yell out as soon as they know the answer, but have to wait until it is asked again, which is pretty much the premise of the puzzle.

The principle is uniquely identifying an item using two dimensions. The trick is that you don’t always need both dimensions. e.g. you only need the number to identify every date in only March or you only need the month to identify every first day of the months. This problem intrigues me because primary keys and unique indexes in relational databases are multi-dimensional unique identifiers.

The problem with this question is that it does not disclose that either of them knows how much the opposite is aware of, much less what they're aware of. In other words, the question doesn't say that Colin knows that Shilpa knows the shape nor does it say that shilpa knows colin is aware of the color. This is an assumption you are making to solve this problem. Even if its the only assumption through the process it still immediately and by default removes it from the catagory of logic puzzle because until you have a proof for something you cannot logically say, for example, whether the cat in the box is dead or not.

Also the problem could honestly be simplified (especially if you were trying to make it really hard for an entrance exam), since there's no real reason for the interviewer to ask multiple times if they know, simply neither one of them not knowing initially is enough to go down this chain of logic. The interviewer asking multiple times only serves to help us understand that the problem is easier when you break it down into steps.

Crazy how the NPCs fixate on little aspects of the puzzle like this, while free-thinkers immediately understand the riddle and begin to decipher it. I think a more interesting question would be "which is the odd one out?" It's more obscure a question, and you get to an answer by similar reasoning. The Green Triangle is the odd one out because neither its partner in colour nor its partner in shape only has one partner. The square and the yellow each only have one partner, but by both being unique in one characteristic, they can't be the odd one out.

It’s just the two of them and the setup is common knowledge that they would be in prior agreement with. Meaning that both understand that the other will be operating with the same rules as themselves and with the stakes as they are, they need to assume that the other is likely as competent, sane and at least as trustworthy as themselves and such. Otherwise the whole concept falls apart and you might as well not even play and resign the both of you to either fate or complete chance and possibly some future reprisal or exclusion.

But you can also connect the objects to the objects they share traits with: Blue square connects to blue triangle connects to green triangle connects to green circle connects to yellow circle. The middle shape in this list (the green triangle) is the furthest from the edge. This doesn't prove anything formally but I suspect there's a valid proof along these lines.

That is a really nice process! But if you show up for a logic test, and if it is some kind of competition, you might ask yourself 'Would the test designers make a test where, at any stage, one candidate could, with logic, discern the correct answer while the other candidate just does not have enough info?' If the answer is yes, then the game is rigged. And, as you know you are not the preferred candidate, you know you will not get admission no matter what. Getting it right or getting it wrong won't matter. But, if the setup is meant to be fair, if neither candidate has a hidden advantage, then it MUST be that the prize is under the green triangle (by symmetry?) And, if if the game is rigged, pick green triangle anyways (though it will be wrong if the game is rigged!) to show them you know what they are up to and throw a scare into them. So, either candidate could answer "Yes! green triangle!" right after the very first question.
@CriticalJ

Not quite. It never explicitly says that whoever knows first wins. Therefore, at any point, when either Shilpa or Colin knows the answer, they both will know the answer. For example, say the color was Yellow. Immediately in round 1 Colin can say "Yes" and in doing so, Shilpa immediately knows the answer as well, and she can therefore say "Yes" right after. If there is no explicit rule stating that the FIRST person to know wins the prize, then the prize can successfully be hidden under any option fairly.

After the first request to solve when neither answered that eliminated the odd shape (the square) and the odd colour (the yellow circle) because if it was either of those one of the two would've known the answer. Since neither answered they both eliminated those two. When asked again and they didn't answer, that eliminated the odd shape (green circle) and the odd colour (the blue Triangle). So when asked a third time that leaves the green triangle and they both know the answer!

I also got stuck on what the prize is and what its shape/color is to try to solve it, so nothing made sense to me in that puzzle 😅 But I'm really not a logical/mathematical person anyway. I solved it in notepad after hearing the questions. A nice quick brain teaser. Here was my thought process. Colin could have been told any of three colors: Blue (40% chance), green (40% chance), or yellow (20% chance). Shilpa could have been told any of three shapes: Triangle (40% chance), square (20% chance), or circle (40% chance). After question one: It cannot be a square, or a yellow circle. After question two: It cannot be a blue triangle, or a green circle. Therefore, it cannot be a square, circle, or blue triangle. It must be a green triangle.

Happy to say I got the answer but I think I took a different route First I gathered the information by shape; identifying 2 triangles, 2 circles and only a single square Then I gathered information by colour; identifying 2 green, 2 blue, but only a single yellow I first started with Colin’s perspective. They knows colour. The colours are arranged that the probability that the prize is under a given colour is in a ratio 2:2:1. This singles out and eliminates the yellow circle as an option. Now you have 2 triangles, a square and a circle. You cannot single out more options by colour so we must say that Colin also knows what Shilpa is being told about the shape. Shape can now be used to eliminate, making the odds now 2:1:1 in favour of the triangles, singling out the circle and square. But that still leaves the blue triangle and green triangle. So now we must move to Shilpa's perspective. They know shape. Shape's assigned probability again starts out as 2:2:1 and singles out the square eliminating it. There is now two triangles and 2 circles. You cannot single out more options by shape to pick out a more favourable option so we must use Shilpa's knowledge that they know Colin has been told about colour and so colour will be used to eliminate options. Chance now becomes 2:1:1 in favour of the green shapes because there are 2 green shapes but only one yellow and one blue shape. That leaves the green triangle and green circle. In both perspectives, the green triangle remains one of the final two narrowed down options. meaning between the blue triangle, green triangle and green circle, the odds are once again 2:1:1 in favour of the green triangle. TLDR: Instead of analysing the 'riddle' in terms of true or false analysis (where they are silent or react) to eliminate options, I used probability. Suffice to say this is (to my memory) the first 'riddle' that I've ever solved without cheating or having heard the riddle before. Even if I did use the less correct formula to get the right answer.
@michaelhoste_
2 жыл бұрын
I don't follow you - the objects aren't eliminated by probability. It's about intersecting sets surely, eg. the first round, with 100% certainty, eliminates the single yellow object, and the single square object. The second round eliminates (with 100% certainty) the single circle and the single blue object. So now we've eliminated four objects and it must (with 100% certainty) be the remaining one. I don't see where 'chance' plays any part.

@@michaelhoste_ but the host told them right? Not to us, but to them. Om glad that you're actually getting my point . Sorry for not mentioning the specifics.. all im saying is, im just following the same solution given above except that mine is one step ahead since i will immediately disregard 3 objects if i was told it was under a triangle. Following that logic, the other guy will be left with 2 objects as well. Just have to find out what is the common denominator of the 2 objects left for us respectively. What i didnt mention is that not both of them will be certain which object has the prize the first time they were asked. But definitely one of them will be at 100% certainty and the other has 50/50 chance.. They would've needed to wait until after the question had been passed with silence and they could be sure that the other didn't know the solution. Only at that point they could have both concluded the right answer, but they were only supposed to speak when asked to. But, you could argue that if either of them had known the solution by the time of the second question, there would've been no reason for either of them to hide the solution (assuming they didn't take any significant time to compute the logic), as there was nothing to lose by doing so. So after a short period of time, they could've been reasonably confident that the other didn't know, and therefore could've concluded the solution, but that's a kind of a complex behaviour which is somewhat detached from strict logic.
