Deborah Hughes knows all the facts and figures behind homelessness. More importantly though, she knows the formula for success: a two-generation approach to end this modern scourge. As the Chief Executive Officer and President of Brookview House, a nonprofit program providing a safe place for moms and children experiencing homeless to live and to build self esteem, she not only knows it, but she also lives it every day. Moreover, she believes we can end homelessness. First though, Hughes says we need to stop shaming and blaming those who need our help most.
Hughes’ work with Brookview House began in 1991 with 16 women and children. To date, she has helped Brookview expand into a multi-service agency providing housing, adult services and youth development programs to more than 350 homeless and at-risk women and children each year.
In 2014, Hughes was presented with the “Be the Change” award before 10,000 attendees at the Massachusetts Conference for Women. This award recognizes a Massachusetts woman who personifies compassion for her community and commitment to improving the everyday lives of those around her.
