He's right on with this diagnosis. Mine started out intermittently. It is there as a buffer when the seat safety opens. Your local deere stocks these. Also, a battery tender is cheaper than a battery, I use one, mostly in the winter. 2005 gx345.

Have to admire the over engineering on that engine, the mystery board with the red & green LEDs, the non intuitive no start fault from a bad shut down module, the insane cost of replacing almost any part of it, plus the engines habit of acting like a bug fogger every so often. Always enjoy watching your channel and thanks for the link to the cheaper TDM

John Deere is like BMW cars. Highly engineered, unreliable, and stunningly high priced parts. I should have never sold my Wheel Horse 520, that was as reliable as a Kalashnikov rifle.

I like your editing style baldeagle Deere must have asked NASA how they launch the space shuttle & then copied them to start a mower . Also, Deere troubleshooting schematic for the gx345 shows the negative of a booster being connected to the metal frame and not the negative of the dead battery ! There is no warning that connecting directly to a dead battery will damage components

The problem with this module, is it is poorly built cheap Chinesium part contracted out by Deere and then they charge you outrageous for that junk. The board says Danlum Corp. on it. The outside case says nothing. How about just hook up a relay like a normal rider had. My guess is this is used to delay a short lift off the seat safety switch on bumps, where they used to kill the engine and backfire. If it wasn't potted there is about $1.50 worth of components soldered to that board. All replaceable by many DIY's out there.

If you suspect a surge is destroying the module, then it is likely one of the active components is getting damaged. Either the two transistors or one of the diodes. You can test the transistors and diodes with your multimeter.

I have JD 345, not sure the year but it has no spark. It doesnt have one of those tdm that I can see? I do have a black square box just off to the side of the starter motor and its mounted to the engine block with one screw? Is that the same thing or something else? Thanks in advance!

Yes, that is the same thing. It can be replaced with the round style shown in this video. My understanding is the square style is no longer available.

A stuck fuel solenoid on the carburetor is another reason it will fail to start when cranking. This can be diagnosed with a shot of starting fluid in the carburetor.

Very true. The issue with these is picking all of the embedding compound out without damaging something else in the process. The cost for a new time delay module is low enough that it negates the time and effort it takes to expose the components on the board.

If it’s still getting fire and won’t start it’s possible the valves need to be adjusted. If it’s not getting fire you could have a bad or weak coil pack. How many hours are on the mower?

John Deere gx345 with no spark. Connected jumper wire from positive battery post to orange/white wire connecting the ignition delay module to the main ignition module. It sparks and runs. I then replaced the tdm with a new one and it will not spark. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for some ideas.

@@MarcellaMcMartin 1. Check Wiring and Connections: • Ensure that all connections to the new TDM are secure and properly connected. • Inspect the wiring harness for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections that might prevent the proper flow of electricity. 2. Test the Ignition Delay Module: • Double-check the new TDM to ensure it’s functioning correctly. Sometimes new parts can be defective out of the box. Test the module using a multimeter or by reinstalling the old TDM to see if the problem is indeed with the new part. 3. Check the Ground Connections: • Ensure that the ignition system has a good ground connection. A poor or broken ground could cause the ignition system to fail, leading to no spark. 4. Test the Ignition Coil: • The ignition coil might be faulty or have an intermittent issue. Use a multimeter to check the coil’s resistance and see if it’s within the manufacturer’s specifications. Replace the coil if necessary. 5. Examine the Key Switch and Safety Interlocks: • The key switch or any safety interlocks (such as seat safety switch, brake switch) might be malfunctioning, cutting off power to the ignition system. Test these components to ensure they are functioning properly. 6. Check for a Short Circuit: • There might be a short in the wiring that is preventing power from reaching the ignition system. Inspect the wiring harness for any signs of wear, exposed wires, or other issues that could cause a short. 7. Review the TDM Installation: • Ensure that the TDM was installed correctly, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A mistake during installation could cause the module not to function properly. 8. Test the Engine Control Module (ECM): • If the problem persists after checking all other components, the issue might lie with the ECM. Testing or replacing the ECM could be necessary to restore proper operation.

Hello. I've had a bad battery for a while, and have been using a huge battery module to jump-start it. Always worked, but I did experience occasional missing at high speed. Now, the engine won't start. I did replace the battery a month ago and everything was working fine. Until last week. It won't start. No Spark on either side. When ignition key is turned on, power does get to the Ignition delay module (through SE2 on the schematic) and power is sent to the solid state ignition module via the Org-Wht wire. So, I'm wondering if it's the Ignition delay module, or the solid state Ignition Module. I'm also going to see if power is getting to the Ignition coils. I don't know what else it could be, I guess It could be the pulser coils, but both malfunctioning at the same time would be a huge coincidence. The tractor is a JD 425, built in 1993. Kawasaki FD620D Engine. Any ideas??? :) The Ignition Module is expensive, but I do have a brand new delay module, which cost me $84 in Canada.

Update - According to the service manual, the Ignition Delay Module (IDM) keeps power going to the Ignition Module (IM) for a second and a half or so "after" the ignition switch is turned off. This is to ignite any unburned fuel in the cylinders, and stop backfiring. I checked the IDR and have the following results... 1. It is powered all the time via the Red wire connected to the starter, which is correct according to the Schematic diagram. 2. When the ignition switch is turned to the on position (ie Starter NOT engaged yet), power is supplied to the IM via the Orange wire. This is without engaging the starter. 3. When the ignition switch is turned off, power does remain on the IM (via the orange wire) for about a second and a half, as noted in the service manual. 4. Power is also being applied to the 2 Ignition coils via the Yellow/white wire. 5. The ground wire is solid on the frame.(Black Wire) My conclusion is that the IDM functions as intended. But there is still no spark. I decided to see if I could test the pulser coils. I disconnected connector X8. I put a volt meter across each of the Pulser coil terminals inside connector X8. When the engine is turned over, they both do produce voltage. That leaves only the IM and Ignition coils, but as noted, both of the Ignition coils going out at the same time would be an incredible coincidence. So that leaves the IM. It can't be tested easily, so I guess I'll take a chance and get a new one? Comments?

I’d be happy to send you this one but I probably did more damage to it pulling all off the stuff off of it that it was embedded in than anything. I know I cracked some of the porcelain or ceramic off a few of the resistors. I probably spent a good 30-40 minutes picking it off just to show it for a few seconds in this video.
