Beautiful! I've always loved the sound of Native American Flutes. Their sounds are always so soothing, beautiful and even very moving. Very lovely sounds you created. This as helped guide me on a spiritual journey and as enriched my life. I thank you so much for touching me with the special gift you have. Playing in a way that stirs my soul. I believe your music is a reflection of what a wonderful rare person you are. I have also been suffering with an illness these last few months and struggle sleeping. I listen to your music to soothe and comfort me it as helped me more than you could know. sending my genuine admiration and appreciation.

Craig, I am deeply touched by your comment. Thank you for taking the time to write your heart-felt thoughts, especially considering that you're not feeling well. It is extremely flattering (and more than a little humbling) that you have found a connection with my playing. I'm just a regular, low-key guy with all the usually faults and flaws, but I suppose I do have a sensitivity for music, so I'm pleased to have sent those vibrations in the right direction! I really do hope you are able to find relief and eventual healing from whatever malady is afflicting you. Not being able to sleep is the worst thing for me. It happened a few times when I had a pinched nerve in my neck. My whole right arm would be extremely sore, and laying down on the pillow made it much worse since it was those vertebrae that were the source of the pain. I couldn't sleep at all. After 3 days without adequate rest, I just conked out from being so tired, despite the pain, and when I awoke the next day, I felt almost completely better. (In retrospect, I think my condition may have been stress-related.) At any rate, keep playing the flute and expressing whatever you feel like it's no one's business! It's such a tremendous healing device that lets you use your own deeply-felt expression to calm yourself from within. I wish that you be at peace and get good rest. Please keep in touch. Peace ~ Bruce

Kerstin, thank you so much for the lovely comment! This little improvisation features a bit of over-blowing so that some of the notes "break". Only once do I think it was intentional! Initially, I didn't want to post this because it seemed too rough to me, but it has a certain raw emotional flavor that represented where my head and heart were at at that time, so I decided to leave it as-is. I keep coming back and listening to this particular video. I love the deep tones and the expression you are able to draw out of the flute. I've just recently started making NAF because I love the sound and love creating these beautiful instruments. This video enticed me to make a low C flute and it turned out pretty good, the only thing is it is very sensitive to overblow on the fundamental note. I've noticed some E flutes are sort of sensitive, is this characteristic of the lower registers?

Keep in mind that value and cost are entirely different things, This flute is worth WAY more to me than what it cost. The word haunting is spot-on. My Condor Cm has been haunting me well for the past 7~8 years. You do need to have larger hands to play it, and the finger holes on some of the notes are rather large in diameter as well.

@acidfriend47 The piece on the top is alternately called the bird, the block, or the fetish. It is a necessary part of the Native American flute as it serves a vital function: it directs the airflow underneath it and forces it out & over the splitting edge through a very narrow slot. Sounds great! Thanks for the video. Are you using an external mic to get this sound quality or just the mic on the camera? I'm just about to order one and I like to looks of the walnut. Would you say there is a difference in sound form the cedar and walnut condor C? Thanks
@AllenBruceRay
9 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment! There is no external mic; it's just the wee tiny one on the camera. The flute, and to a greater extent the location itself provide all of the ambiance. sounds are bouncing around everywhere inside a tunnel like this, so it's really hard NOT to make a great recording unless you're standing too far away from the camera, or there is excessive extraneous noise such as traffic, etc.There may be a slight difference in tone between cedar and walnut. The tight-grain of walnut, which is a hardwood, helps to produce a crisp, clear tone. Walnut flutes have the added advantage of being much more durable. The softwood cedar flutes produce a warm and rich tone, too, but they are very easily damaged. I love them both. You would do just as well with either a a cedar or a walnut Condor. Happy shopping!

Hello Peter ~ First, I really appreciate your grand comments! I'm humbled by your exceedingly kind words. Second, if you're a flute player, then you NEED to have one of these flutes! They're very easy to play, and you can honor your native heritage by doing so. I don't have any Native American heritage myself, but I hope that through my flute playing I can show my respect and gratitude to them for creating such a wonderful instrument. Last, I do not make or sell any flutes myself. I simply buy them and play them, and I also put the links to the relevant maker's sites under each video where it says SHOW MORE. This one is a High Spirits C minor Condor in walnut. Look here: highspirits.com/collections/flutes-in-the-key-of-c/products/condor-bass-c-walnut I would certainly recommend any High Spirits flute. Those are probably the most marketed Native American-style flutes on the internet, and they're of consistently great quality. I own about 17 of them (!) Good luck in your search for a flute. There are so many great craftsmen & women out there making them. Peace ~ Bruce

Thank you Jason! I'm not familiar with that tune or show (I haven't watched TV in ... probably decades. Don't even own one.) I'll check out the tune here on KZitem. If the notes go up higher, though, it won't be possible because this flute is limited to a range of about 1 octave + 2 extra notes. That's the trade-off with Native American-style flutes - they're so easy to play, and they sound beautiful, but their note range is quite limited. That said, one can do a lot with the notes that are available. Peace ~ Bruce

That's it! Try imitating a rolled "r" sound in the manner common to speakers of Spanish, Italian, and especially Arabic languages. (Scottish English displays this, too.) Some people can do this better than others, and some not at all. Don't despair if you can't do it, though. It's a cool effect, granted, but it's also one best used sparingly because, as with any effect, it can quickly become really annoying if overused. Thanks for asking, btw! :)

HighSpirits recommends the Sparrow Hawk flute for a beginner. I find the tones of this Condor Bass flute resonate a lot more with me than the Sparrow Hawk. I have some experience playing the harmonica... which would you recommend I purchase: the Sparrow Hawk or the Condor? Nice work!
@AllenBruceRay
10 жыл бұрын
First, a big thank you for the compliment! There are good reasons that High Spirits recommends the Sparrow Hawk as a starter flute, and mainly it has to do with size - it's smaller and therefore much easier to play. On the other hand, you need large-ish hands and long arms to play the Condor. The length of the flute is where the longer arms come in handy, and the spacing of the holes is much farther apart, so big hands win out in this area, too. On top of that, the diameter of the top three holes is rather large. I've heard from at least a couple of people who have bought Condors but couldn't play them because of the hole sizes. I happen to have been blessed in the arm & hand departments, but I still found it a little taxing the first time I played it as well. That said, it got easier over time. One's hands will adjust eventually. The point is that the Sparrow Hawk can be your "gateway flute." (You could also go with a Red-tailed Hawk G minor or Golden Eagle F# minor.) Once you've learned how to play that one, you simply apply the same skills & techniques to all the other NAF's you will undoubtedly end up buying. Remember that the lower in pitch the flute is, the longer it will be and the farther apart the holes will be spaced. Hope this helps!
@Abundnce10

Allen Bruce Ray Thanks for the quick response and great advice! If I plan on eventually purchasing a Condor Bass, should I take into consideration the key of the Red-tailed Hawk flute that you suggest I get as a first flute? I'm assuming It'd be a good idea to get both flutes in the same key, so I could play alongside another friend. Do you have any advice? Thanks again!
@AllenBruceRay
10 жыл бұрын
Abundnce10 Sounds like you've answered your own question! Actually, you could get two Red-tailed Hawks, or you could get one of those & then the Condor. Gm & Cm will play together to a degree, and there are overlapping relevant keys within their scales. For starting out, though, it would be best to get two identical flutes.

Allow your breath pressure to die away completely - that's it! To actually bend notes up or down, simply roll off of or onto the appropriate holes with your fingers (and simultaneously decrease your breath pressure when attempting to get falling notes). Actually, I did it rather poorly in this video as the notes "break" into a different octave in the process, but as the intended effect was that of a person crying, it still sort of works, albeit crudely. Bending notes on a NA flute is very easy.

I have a technical question...how do you get the pitch to fall as you're playing a single note?

Whats the Top part that is popping out for? is it just design or is it an important part of the mouthpiece.

That may be so, but then you also have those long, thin fingers that are a boon for playing the low whistle, which you do with considerable skill. You aren't missing anything, really!

I have no doubt that a Western cedar flute could have a deep sound just like this one.

How do you make your flute so deep sound is it cuz it has bigger holes
@AllenBruceRay

Yes, the bigger holes do contribute to the deep tone. There is also the fact that this flute has no direction holes drilled in the end. Many makers put 4 direction holes near the end of the flute as a way to tune the fundamental note (That's the note you get with all the holes closed). It's also a traditional feature of many Native American flutes: the idea is that your song then goes out to all four directions as well as to the earth and sky. Flutes that don't have these direction holes often have a very rich fundamental note.

Do you make and sell flutes
@AllenBruceRay

Hi Jesse, The short answer is no, I don't make flutes. Even though I *have* made one flute totally from scratch and a couple of others from kits, I am a flute PLAYER, first and foremost. I did at one time look into the possibility of doing that, but it turned out not to be something I felt I could pursue. Thanks for asking though!
