I appreciate this video more than you will ever know. I'm currently writing my first ever song in open D Minor tuning and I feel myself coming out of a prolonged rut. For the chorus it works well for me to go to G minor when, in the past, I would have used G major. Thanks again!

I tried with 3 alternative tuning, and I think this is my favorite by far. Sounds melancholic, magic and it's very easy to understand. The only different thing I did, was changed all 1 step down, I mean, starting in CGC... etc! You have a new subscriber! Thanks for your tips. Regards from México.

My favorite tuning of all time due to the ease of expression without understanding what was going on - thanks for such a nice introduction/overview of minor, major, 2nd variations etc.

Thank you Tom. I am going to watch this several times this weekend. I originally requested your take on DADFAD - I just got a new guitar that will allow me to put my older one in the open tuning - I also just started my own channel on youtube with an original finger style in open tuning - I called it 7th Heaven Raindrops because it is full of 7 chords, and it rained most of June here. It's all about the journey for us older beginners. I have to learn video editing, my Studio One editing, my pod hd 300 affects/looper so much to know, and so little time. God bless!

A couple of other fun cords are Bb by fretting strings 5 and 2 at the 1st fret and muting the 6th string. Also, A 7 sus 4 with 2nd fret on strings 3 and 4, muting string 6. Great video!

Tom I Checked out this- as I am recently trying to learn/play, skip James ‘Hard floor’...The spare guitar now stuck in open D min...this has expanded my availability of sounds in this tuning- as a ‘rest’ from that song and some struggles...but also what a way to practise holding down bar chords (which I find hard usually..and therefore miss out on their use in so many songs..) Also (for me) I got 90% of it all theoretically too ! Very interesting and big Thanks.

Hi Tom, great lesson!! Love the way you teach man! I'm loving this tuning! Question..how do you add a 9th to the chords? Could you share some insight on that for me? Thanks!

I tried this tuning last night, using the Fishman onboard tuner on my Martin. It didn’t sound good, even though the tuner said I was playing DADFAD. I’m going to try a different tuner.
