Seeing these braids reminded me growing up in Compton Ca 👍 Im Mexican American and my best friend next door neighbor ( Carol ) was African American. When I would visit her I would see how her mom would braid her hair and I wanted those beautiful braids on my hair too. I asked her mom Wendy if she could do my hair like that, she said ask your mom first if she says it's 👌 ok then I'll give it a go. I ran to my house to ask my mom ( I was 9 years old ) My mom said sure mija. My hair is naturally pin straight and she had the hardest time adding the beads at the tips, I remember she tried adding foil but that didn't go to well. But she didn't give up. After a couple of hours my hair was braided and I felt Amazing and Blessed she took time out of her schedule to braid my hair. Those were the days 😀

My mom was friends with a black woman when I was growing up. She had kids and we were friends too. Her mom had her own little hair shop in part of her house where she did hair. She always put braids in my hair (easier to maintain due to my hair being down to my thighs.) I grew up in a predominantly black neighborhood and I never got told I shouldn’t or couldn’t wear braids or that she shouldn’t put them in my hair. I miss having braids but in today’s social climate, I don’t think it’s worth getting my ass chewed. Sad.

What I don’t understand is why there would be an issue with you doing box braids on someone who is of a different colour. Isn’t that in itself discrimination? Being upset because someone of another colour admires that particular hair style and would like to have it done on themselves. If anything, that should be a compliment not an insult. @endlessnameless174

Sav Elaine but how is that the fault of the person wearing dreads? Also, white people get equally ridiculed, if not more for this hairstyle (I’m not equating black struggles to white struggles because I know you guys have been experiencing this longer and harder, but dreads are not just a problem when they are on black people). Just because one person can’t have something, doesn’t mean no one else can if they’re not part of the problem. That’s like saying because poor people can’t afford MacBooks, no one should buy them.
@ItsSavannaCarter
6 жыл бұрын
Nadia Pajkovski Or Mac could make its items true to cost and make affordability plans. Aka if you want the style do the research on why it's culturally significant to where it came from instead of hopping on for trend and aesthetic like most people do.. that's all. I think we can all agree that it's bullshit when someone else gets credit for someone else's hard grueling work yeah? Black people have had to work the hardest for our hair to be acceptable. We have to be twice as good, twice as hard working, twice as anything to be equal. Even our hairstyles are less appropriate on us than on white people... I think that's a true problem. Especially since there is so much culture around braids and Afro hair care that is no being forgotten about of dismissed. Not only that but if you're going to chose to embrace part of a culture but not its issues? You shouldn't be poking your nose there anyway. It's cherry picking. If you want cultural styles, stand up for the cultural trials.

MissPronounced Not a problem, depending on what type of braids you're referring to. French braids, etc are called braids but the style mostly pertains to Caucasians. The braids in this video (box braids), Marley braids, Ghana weaving and twists, cornrows, etc are African. So when you say many cultures did braids, you're right but it depends on what type of braids we're referring to. It's like saying 'yeah, many cultures wear clothes', that is true but what style of clothing are you referring to? You can't wear an Indian cultural attire and say everyone wears clothes. It's either you're showing appreciation in good heart or you're making mockery of it.

People these days are so sensitive and need to start listening to what people have to say instead of having a closed mind and thinking that only what THEY know is right. That’s not how life works. If you new EVEYTHING there was to know in this world, you wouldn’t be here. We are all here learning everyday. And we all need to love each other instead of divide each other. If you have a problem with non-black people having braids and feel like others shouldn't have braided styles like us, you are racist. Sip Of Tia 시프어브티아 discrimination and racism are two different things hun. Black people have been discriminated against for how they have their hair i.e. stopped from getting jobs, from going to certain schools etc, and are constantly called ghetto for how they have their hair, so for white people to jump on the trend because it’s ‘fashionable’ is a little bit insensitive and can be seen as disrespectful after black people have been oppressed for so long. That’s where people are coming from and don’t appreciate seeing white people with the same hairstyles.

K Lm Racism: prejudice, *discrimination*, or antagonism directed against someone of a *different race* based on the belief that one's own race is superior. So no, discrimination and racism are not that different. Now in the US, black women have more freedom to express themselves. There is no longer racism here. Well there is, but it's against the law. Now, if a black woman is stopped from doing a job or going to school because of her hair, she will get that justice she deserves. So that can no longer be used as an excuse to be hateful towards white people looking forward to new things. Negative + Negative always = negative. Since black women were discriminated and hated on for wearing hairstyles, it's time to hate on white people for doing the hairstyles after racism and all of that became illegal in a FREE country?? I feel proud to know the hairstyles African Americans wore were once "unacceptable" is widely acceptable now, especially for people who aren't African American. But that's just me. Continue to have the mindset you have and there will be no joy in life. This will only spread more racism in our country.

They care so much because the African culture (remember originally from the same place) was stripped away and blacks in America were and are told their traits (African traits) are ugly and unwanted. So imagine someone telling you your tan is ugly and that you’re lesser for it but then they go get a tan themselves 🤔 but aren’t viewed as ugly. Africans who migrated later don’t understand because didn’t experience the same treatment. Soo if there was no negativity associated with it wouldn’t be a big deal. I agree with a lot of people that if you acknowledge that black women don’t have the same privileges with the hair than it’s okay to have but the system needs to also change so some aren’t looked at as lesser than while people of the “desired” ethnicity can exploit that loop hole. Your statement also doesn’t help to unite Africans and blacks, too much hostility. All from the same place just gotta understand each other.

Jaisha26 Actually, a lot of white women do care, especially if you look good in it. But our reasons for wearing straight hair is different in comparison to them wanting to wear traditionally african hairstyles. We wear straight hair for social acceptance, they wear box braids and corn rows just to follow a trend. And I don't want to sound racist because I'm not but white ppl have a history of erasing black ppl from their own heritage. Ancient Kemet and the ancient Israelites are prime examples. Nowadays ppl think these ppl were white but they were actually black and still live today, not even knowing who they actually are. The ancient Egyptians were actually Cushites and the ancient Hebrew Israelites are so called African Americans, and they stole our culture from us. Not only that but look how Rock music as well as a few other music genres established by blacks were white-washed. That's why I don't really like the idea of them wearing hairstyles that basically signify our culture because it's an identifier. Sort of like a fingerprint. The Cushitic ppl still wear their hair and have the same traditions as the ancient Egyptians and that's how we're able to tell who they were, and if white people start wearing our styles it's easy for them to steal our culture (once again) and say they were us because they're the ones writing history.

I clicked on the multiple articles and read them almost with my jaw dropped, as I still couldn't believe that this was not a joke. I don't mean to offend anyone but in my very own opinion, saying that white people shouldn't wear braids is just ridiculous. In ancient Greece women used to wear their hair in braids too...so? Any women has the right to wear her hair however she likes, it's her hair, which is part of her body, body integrity is a fundamental right. If a woman is being racist, judgemental, or a bad person in general has nothing to do with what her hair looks like. And every woman that wears braids is definitely not automatically trying to look any race, or ethnicity. People need to start supporting each other instead of spreading hate, this is absolutely ridiculous.

@Essence Knight yeah, i am in europe but eastern, and i always found it so beautiful, we have braids too that would be considered cornrows i guess but we do ribbon braiding, one in the middle and 2 on the side, and we were a comunist countri until 1989, we had absolutely no interaction with the exterior world in any shape or form, tv and radio was only the president, and when we finally got MTV anf western music on black and white TV we were in just complete Awe, how is it possible for a braid to be so small, how can their curls be so small, how is it possible to get a wand that small to curl, we genuinely didn't see black people anywhere in here and were so baffled and amazef at the sight of a black person, and some tried to comprehend it through shepherding as it might be similar to wool and stuff like that. So all and all the actual boc braids, Afro's and tiny cornrows we first saw through music and western shows after 1989, and we all thought it was some type of sorcery honestly, and obviously as western culture entered our TV it becoming a popular intrest or "trendy" didn't take too long, and yeah throughout the 90's people did them or tried to do them. I am very afraid to do anything out of anybodies culture at this point, i just feel like bad in a way when i know do many people get denied jobs and lil kids made fun of for literally their genes and things they cannot control and should never be changed, and i get how someone can get very pissed of at seeing someone non-black wearing culture as a trend and getting praised and than the originators get bashed, but if the person itself who is wearing it doesn't and have never bashed you personally as a person, why get mad at her personally, she is just someone who fell in love with it and wants to appreciate it through wearing it.. that is the part i don't understand

Thank you so much for pointing this out. I am Irish so my skin is as white as a ghost and my hair is very straight. For the longest of time I really wanted cornrows because i thought they looked fabulous and I also appreciated the skill people have for doing braids. In Ireland I sadly struggled to find a hairdressers that did cornrows. My mother is a hairdresser and decided to give it a go without extensions and she did a fantastic job. I was 14 at the time and many black people, people of colour, Africans (whatever phrase is least offensive please let me know) attacked me verbally saying I was a racist. These were mainly people they told me braids were for their people and that white people should not be allowed to get braids done as braids are a symbol of freedom from slavery. I explained I was in no way racist and that I see people for their personalities and not their look I simply liked cornrows and wanted to get them. They then went on saying "they are only for blacks". I then fought back saying how would they take it if I said straight hair was only for white people. They then said that they only straighten their hair or wear wigs because white people judge them for having curly hair. I realized I was not gonna win. I think anyone should be able to express themselves in looks without having to worry about being called names.

Andris Isichei it's not hate, have you seen the effects of what slavery, physical and mental oppression, etc. has done to us as a people? We have constantly been attacked and made fun of for our culture, so yes obviously we become upset when we see such things happening. Black people have to stop trying to be so inclusive with their things. We don't see white folk going around inviting us into their "culture" so why should we always be pushing them to try our own things out? Have you not seen the continuous pattern of us trying to include them into our things and then it being stolen from us? Sorry but some of us are becoming woke and intelligent and refuse to make that mistake again. Have a good day 💯

That was in the PAST can you at least try to forgive? Yeah there is still a lot of stupid people in the world who can't respect others properly but you don't have to be one of them. And yeah, white people aren't exactly inviting you into their culture, but they aren't trying to stop and hate on people who do come in. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

ITS NOT CULTURAL APPROPRIATION ITS MORE LIKE CULTURAL APPRECIATION. Like just sit down kids. People are trying to move on! Nobody says anything if a black person has straightened hair. Nobody says anything if a black person dyes their hair blonde. Whoever does their hair a certain way must like that style so much they want to do it. Is that a bad thing? To be appreciated? I’m so sick of this racism coming from both sides. Just stop. Just be happy that people are liking something of your culture so much that they want to promote it on their heads. Everyone really needs to stop being so sensitive. JUST 👏🏼 SIT 👏🏼 DOWN 👏🏼 AND 👏🏼 LOVE 👏🏼 EACH 👏🏼 OTHER 👏🏼 k sorry but she did a really good job with the braid and stuff like you go girl ♥️👏🏼👏🏼

Rhea Bloomfield may I ask you why do you like dreadlocks? Why would you want to wear something that symbolises other people's culture on your head (semi) permanently? Straight hair does not solely belong to white people. There black people from subsaharan Africa, brown people from Asia etc that have straight hair. Similarly there are people of non European origin who have natural blonde hair and blue eyes, so straightening or dying your hair is not "white appropriation". Whereas, dreadlocks are a tradition hairstyle that connects people to their roots and culture. I can't seem to understand why you think you should be entitled to take that? I'm not black American btw. I think dreadlocks look cool but I'll never get them because they're not my culture. I have my own culture that I'm proud of.

Braiding hair is an ancient custom in all cultures. Many cultures may have different styles of how they braided their hair, and also these hairstyles were also copied from culture to culture. Many styles of hair braids were depicted by the tribe the person belong to. Braiding hair is not exclusive to Black people. Some braids are named after the geographical location in which the style started. Such as the French braid. Not getting off of the subject dreadlocks are not exclusive to black people either. Any type of hair can lock. Meaning that the hair has a dry Tangled uncombed appearance. I have seen historical pictures of people in different cultures that were wearing the so-called dreadlock. Black people straighten their hair so why can't people from other cultures braid and lock their hair? 🤗🤗🤗🤗

Meredith C That's the point, it doesn't concern them because IT'S JUST FOOD ffs the only problem that could possibly arise is if people started discrediting them which they _haven't_ everyone knows pasta and pizza is italian, everyone knows kilts are scottish, everyone knows sushi and kimonos are japanese and everyone knows yoga and saris are indian. Honestly we need to change this mentality about hairstyles, hell cornrows aren't even exclusive to africans- indians, natives and dutch people used to do them too
@Nohandle1125
6 жыл бұрын
Meh Black hair isn’t “just hair” because for generations we have been told we should have be ashamed of our black hair. Black hair means more to black people than hair does to anyone else in America because of that very reason. So don’t say “it’s just hair” because we all know that it isn’t. If it was, black hair wouldn’t be so political but it is which exactly why we are very protective of it and the hairstyles attached. Those aren’t even cornrows in the video. They are box braids which are in fact very exclusive to African braiding traditions and even if they weren’t, the only reason white people in America wear them is because they see back people wearing. Not because white people did it 2000 years ago.
@Meh-uo3fb
6 жыл бұрын
Meredith C First of, I was reffering to the many MANY people who seem to think certain styles like cornrows are african inclusive my statement had nothing to do with braids, as I said origins should not be discredited. Second of all ofcourse we used to suffer. Our hair was seen as nappy and unnattractive and finally things are starting to look up we are finally starting to accept several parts of ourselves and we're finally being appreciated all over the world and what do we do? we push back on the idea of having our culture appreciated and continue to bitch about the past instead of building on the now and here. Honestly maybe because I'm african and over here hairstyles are shared by cultures and not fussed about as much I may not adequately understand how you feel but this all seems very counterproductive imo
@Nohandle1125
6 жыл бұрын
Meh Well if you’re African than of course you have no reason to feel the way that African *Americans* do. Which is why I specifically said African Americans. Why mentions cornrows if the video is about box braids? I happen to be pro-culture sharing but as I’ve said throughout this video more than once, I understand where the frustration comes from but as an African, I suppose you wouldn’t. Your culture hasn’t been stolen from you directly neither have you been stolen from your culture. You still have strong ties to your land unlike most African Americans. So we really aren’t the same. You’re right this was very counterproductive. And we can very easily build on the here and now and it can also very easily be done by keeping it within ourselves.

Small braids in long hair dont fall out. Especially not for them cause they didn't have shampoo so their hair was a lot more textured. Im pretty sure the vikings, originating from scandinavia were white.... Braids arent exclusive to race. They are a long hair exclusive thing

I'm just saying the lady in the video and my sister's friends dont have issues with sharing their culture with other people. I can see how it would anger folks if they were mocking it. But who goes through the trouble just to hate on a culture? Like someone said, if she was trying to be that German big tittied bitch or Dolezal then I would completely agree with that.

The problem I have is people go around saying “ it’s cultural appreciation if you don’t learn about the significance, history, etc.” but to what extent does someone have to study a culture before they are “knowledgable enough” to be able to experience it. As a black person, I can completely agree that it is definitely wrong when people try to ridicule our styles but then copy them, but realistically it’s not the same people who are making the insults that choose to copy our styles. When I wear my braids, I wear them simply becuase I think they look nice not becuase of any particular history behind them, so how am I any different to a non-black person who chooses to wear braids. It might just be becuase I’m from Britain that I can’t relate to the levels of racism as an African American might, but I’m always interested to hear people’s opinions. I think that it’s really important to accept that it’s very hard to draw boundaries in regards to controversial topics such as this, but at the end of the day every one is entitled to their own opinion. If you don’t like this KZitem video, then don’t watch it. Simple🤷🏽♀️

Because box braids is a hairstyle that belongs to black people for our hair. A hairtype has no culture but cause that's a natural physical trait, a black person can be born with straight hair or with blue eyes or blonde hair the same as a white person could be born with afro hair. Its not something you choose, you're just born with it. Hairtype isn't a culture That doesn't mean white people can't wear boxbraids but this example you're giving just does not make sense

As a white woman, I want to say that I adore watching your videos. I watch them because of your talent, and the absolute beautiful designs you create. I love watching the preciseness of your parts, and the care you take with your clients. They never look like they are in pain, and many fall asleep in the chairs. Seeing you care for their hair with gentle procedures and products show that you care about them and their hair, not just your money. I would absolutely adore getting my hair done in box braids or goddess locks or even locks, but I haven’t because I do not want to upset anyone, plus my job would not allow me to (though a black coworker is allowed, RIGHTFULLY SO!). The reason why I would love to have my hair done is because I find the styles absolutely gorgeous, and it takes all your clients beauty up a notch (though most are a 10/10 to begin with!) And I’m so jealous of most of your clients and the thick, voluminous hair they have. I have thin, fine hair that has no volume without tons of products and sorcery. Some of really do want it because we find they styles (and those who have them) beautiful. And yes, I try to tell everyone I see that they have beautiful hair, no matter the style.

I’m really mixed. I mean... REALLY MIXED. African, Latina, Asian, European and Native American. I have long, curly, natural hair. I love box braids, I think they look awesome. But I’m scared to ever braid my hair like that because I don’t want to be accused of cultural appropriation. People can’t tell just from looking at me that I’m part African . But honestly, why should they care? Curly haired women straighten their hair, straight haired women curl their hair, should that not be allowed? Box braids are like... an incredible, smart, stylish way to keep hair styled and less high maintenance than usual. Why should we be upset when other races want to braid their hair in traditionally African styles? Unless they’re running around like that meme girl saying that they’re suddenly black or disrespecting African culture in another way, what’s wrong with it? I think most people just wear the braids to appreciate them. I also think y’all need to calm DOWN.

Society won't improve because while white women are praised for appropriating other cultures black women are shamed for trying to enjoy their own culture. Then there's black women who think they're helping by saying let people do what they want but the "people" their talking about usually end up being white women. White women are already ahead of women of color in having more rights, and tolerance in society it won't hurt them at all to stick to their own cultures and stay out of POC cultures. Letting them take whatever they want is just encouraging the gentrification and assimilation of POC cultures.

I am multiracial and I don’t really feel like I fit in with the ethnicity’s I am made up of, I don’t look Mexican, African American, or white. I have naturally kinky curly hair and can pretty much do most African hair styles with my hair but I have light skin. When I was in elementary school I would love getting my hair in cornrows but one day I ask my friend if she liked them and she told me I wasn’t “black enough” to have cornrows. I didn’t really care much about what she had said, but being biracial I love celebrating all the cultures, so I really don’t see why i am “not black enough” to wear my hair in braids or how ever I want to?

You have a unique beauty that only having a mixed background can give you. So tired of others trying to tell mixed people what box they should fit in! We're in our own box! 😊

My friend Aisha actually grew up in Africa, her mother and father were missionaries, so they were always in a predominately black area. She would always have her hair braided, I looked at pictures of her and I’ve never seen one without her hair up. Aisha is white but her culture is African, so when she moved to America and people saw a white family witb braids, African clothes, and decor they were ridiculed and actually had people come by and destroy their property. I guess some people just can’t understand that and it’s sad, we are supposed to be going forward in the world, not go backwards.

White supremacy is a global system perpetuated by white privilege. Missionaries in Africa?! Did Africans not know God before the white man? Missionaries have caused so much damage on the continent and are being band by many countries. Again the idea they are superior and still African culture only reveals their perspective of culture in Africa.

I asked them about crochet braids ... the answer collapsed from my legs. She said that they do not do it to a white woman And that this is a hairdresser for black people ... You did not see how you came in here? she asked me. After a while her friend agreed to make hair for me but I had to pay 100% more because my hair is straight and I'm a white woman. She also say that white women shouldn’t wear brides because is “black culture” and white wonen steal that from them 🤨😐 then on the end she say : sure first you want to steal our culture then probably you go hunting on black men and steal them from black wonen to !!! So my point is : nobody need to be so rude during explanation or answering like this on my nice question ... “excouse me there is possibility then you’ll make brides for me ?” I never was thinking then with that question I’ll hear some aggressive opinion about me then I’m white women stealing other cultures or others men 😓😅😂 ✌🏼✌🏼

It's okay for a smaller group to protect their culture. Our relationship isn't balanced. We need more bargaining power before we can have a fair cultural exchange Black folks had to pay the price to wear braids and locs. I remember black folks being told that cutting their locs was a sign of growth. Thankfully we have a crown act. Now you can't discriminate against black hair styles. They are black hair styles. White folks have to learn boundaries when dealing with a smaller group. Sentimental humanism isn't going to solve our problems.
