Had an off-beat privately badged non-programmable stat stick on full heat at a second property in a rural area, a couple years back. After not being there for a month I arrived one winter day to find the house over 110° F. The 500 gal LP tank lost about 75% of a recent fill so lord knows how long that old standing pilot Heil furnace was running continuously. At that point a commercial grade Honeywell stat was installed like I use elsewhere. Lesson learned and luckily the house didn’t burn to the ground. Expensive gas bill too.

My Honeywell mercury thermostat is still working fine

*Yep. Love 'em. Adjustable anticipator, no monkey business, they just flat work.*

Look for thermostat that has settable hysteresis and settable minimum run time. Most electronic thermostats have power glitch hold off restart but need 'C' 24vac return wiring to sense grid power glitches. Thermostat operation is highly dependent on location placement and there is no perfect spot.

The best thing is when you have to explain to the customer that the old T87 Honeywell has to go 😅. As far as new “bad” thermostats the ones I hate seeing is PRO, and any magnetic reed stats

It’s funny how some of the mercury and even bi metal thermostats are still out there are for the most part still working good. Way better than the modern el cheap o versions

I agree on the wife factor, even though one shouldn't be able to differentiate a 3 degree span. I'm not sure if some models have means to change the differential.

Fewer cycles/hr - How exactly are greater temperature swings easier on the wife? I'd set my cycles/hr to unity if it wasn't for her always complaining about being too hot or too cold.

But wouldn't a longer running system swing the temperature even more?

2 out of 3 ain't bad

In my experience-- it's the other way around. A thermostat that runs longer will have the temp swings.. Where as one that turns off and on often: will keep the temp right around the same all day. But I agree that it's not good for motors to restart. I just leave my window unit fan running all the time when it's real hot. I think it even lowers the bill a bit. Because those start spikes pull a lot of current, as you said. You just have to keep up with your bearing/bushing maintenance if you keep them running like that.. As for "learning" thermostats-- I'm not really sure. I just turn the unit off if I can get away with using only a fan, on the modest days.. and try to save on the bill.

Sometimes you have to compensate for cool air drafts from registers that cause premature short cycling.
