As a returning rider, on my new 2004 ST1300A, with just under 50,000 miles, all these comments are very helpful. THANK YOU, for the great video sans fairing, my very first view! Riding season is mostly over now, so Winter is my time to thoroughly Safety - reliability-check the total package. Looking forward to it.

I have always had a problem with really cleaning a bike. There are so many nooks and crannies and I tend to be a perfectionist so I get stuck in the details. It either takes way too long or i quit in frustration.

Consider replacing the steering head (triple clamp) bearings with good tapered bearings. You will fix a hands-off wobble at around 40 mph and will have a more secure feeling during high speed cornering. Maybe even fix a high speed wobble at 120 mph on the police bikes with the box on the back. I put a passenger backrest on mine and never had a problem over 130 in the desert. Felt like doing 85!

I’ve not had any wobble problems from new. I guess it all depends on the assembly of each bike.

Thanks for the video, very nice. Out of interest how did you clean the engine casings, cylinders etc? Soapy water and brush or something stronger? Engine looked good after cleaning.

It was a pain in the butt. I think there is a KZitem somewhere that shows the steps. If I find it I'll post the link in the comments. The problem is putting it back together using those plastic rivets/grommets. Tip: as soon as you remove one and take a panel off put that grommet or screw back in place where you removed it or you will get them confused with the others cause they aren't all the same size and shape, I ended up using zip ties instead of the original screws and/or plastic rivets in a lot of cases.

WD40 is fantastic for a quick wipe of the wheels. You should try it. Ha. Just picked one up. Thanks for a look under the fairings.

So did you get the fairing back on easily?
@OccasionallyEvil
4 жыл бұрын
Short Answer: No. Those goddamn plastic push pin fasteners that motorcycle manufacturers use are useless. So I go with tried and true zip ties. Three of my four bikes are now held together mostly with those. Tip: when you remove a screw/fastener and take the fairing off, put that screw/fastener back in its hole asap so you know where it goes for later re-assembly.

How do you bleed brakes and clutch without removing the fairings? It's a pain but it should be done every 2 or 3 years
@OccasionallyEvil
Жыл бұрын
You are right, you have to remove the fairings to bleed the brakes properly. I did that later in the year. And you are right, in a perfect world a person should do that every 2 or 3 years. So I do have fresh brake and clutch fluid in now. And maybe change it again in 5 years , not 10 :) I think changing these hydraulic fluids every 2 years is excessive and unnecessary unless you live in a very wet climate.

I changed my plugs at 80,000ks The new plugs made no difference to the running of the engine. As for fuel consumption, I've had 572ks from full tank. When I went to fill it, it only took 27ltrs. So there was still about 2 litres left before empty.

60K and still on the same plugs? Don't Honda specific service intervals in the US? ;) I wish my 04 ST13 still cleaned up that good with only 15K on it but then I am in the UK, plus I do ride it more than clean it. Amazes me how clean some peoples bikes are, I think to myself, do they find time to ride it or must have a very understanding other half?

It was 60 K and 9 years with the same coolant (which I know is bad). I have changed the plugs before around 30K.

Oh wow, same coolant since new. And here I was feeling guilty about mine. I swapped coolant to Engine Ice 3 years ago. I know I should change it but haven't yet. Did you change your brake fluid at the same time? Interesting to see that bike without the fairings. I'm not a fan of cleaning either. Some people are anal about it and clean their bike after every ride; yikes!

The old coolant actually looked good, no dirt or discoloration. I changed my rear brake fluid a couple years ago, but have never changed the front! Nor the clutch fluid...!! Shocking I know. Brakes work good and so does the clutch. So my philosophy has always been "if it works don't fix it". The ST1300 has a complicated braking system which connects the front and rear brake. Doesn't look straight forward. I'll bleed and change it some day, maybe.

Nah. The gas tank, while it is huge, doesn't adversely effect the handling once you're moving. I've had my '05 for 11+ years and the only time I notice the weight is at ultra slow speeds, say, 3 mph or less. 400 km? I can get roughly 400 miles on a tank, even when I'm being pretty much a hooligan. You did a good job on the clean up though.
@OccasionallyEvil

Dave, we must have different riding styles because, as I say the amount of gas in the tank makes a significant difference for me. As far as you mileage. I find 400 miles hard, if not impossible to believe. I consistently get 16.5 - 17 km per liter as per the read-out on my bike (riding fast 120km/hr+). It's a 29 liter tank. That translates to 480 to 500 km with NO reserve. or approx. 300 miles. Can you verify your mileage? Is there anyone else out there getting 400 miles (650 km) on a tank? The only way I can achieve that mileage (22 km/liter) is to ride on straight flat roads keeping to the speed limit. And that never happens. :)
@davesmith2155

I don’t know about liters, although I’m sure I could figure it out. It holds 7.6 gallons, including the lower “reserve”. I consistently get 49-53 mpg going through mountains and canyons, my preferred paths of travel. I’ve never had to put in more than 7 as I don’t let it get that low. I just got back from a two thousand mile trip to California and never saw less than 49 and never put in more than 6.8. I know the odo is slightly inaccurate (1%, I think) although not as much as the speedo which is off a consistent 7%, checked numerous times using two or three methods. As far as riding style, I DO try not to exceed the posted by more than 15, except when passing. I don’t race but keep up a reasonably quick pace.

@@davesmith2155 You can’t be doing much city work with that MPG. I’ll get 38-40 MPG (US) when there’s city start stop stuff. Longer distance runs 45+.

@@pentachronicyou are correct, not much city work. When I was working I was commuting 72 miles each direction. This is a REALLY old post. I wadded my ST up on Super Bowl Sunday in 2022 when I hit some black ice on Lolo Pass. God wasn’t done with me yet as two vehicles barely missed me. Still miss that machine sort of miss it but actually knew it was getting too heavy for me. Replaced it with as close as I could find but 200+ lbs. lighter, a 2013 R1200RT. Still riding at 73.

Not changing the antifreeze for 8-10 years, is one of the worst things you could do to an internal combustion engine/cooling system, especially when there is a lot of aluminum.
