Because theres no R&B, Blues, Rock, Jazz & every modern form of music without America. British have always emulated Americans. You only hear RAYEs accent when she raps, singing wise its always gonna come out “sounding American” because American singers are her blueprint & influence.

She hasn't got a "British" accent, she's got a London/Southern accent. Northerners pronounce words differently and sound more like what you'd call 'American' sounding. But she is an amazing singer so I think however she pronounces her words she'll sound great

@PommeLavande if you read my comment again you'll see I didn't say northerners sound American. I said the way they pronounce words is more like the way Americans pronounce words, as in the vowel sounds. Southerners pronounce their vowels differently to northerners.

Now, I’m British and wouldn’t sing or say it like this, I’m Yorkshire so would just sound awful in a song if pronounced “wah-er” so would prefer people to think of this when they think of British. 🤭🤷♀️ Would love to hear this more in general, love her pronunciation in Escapism. ❤️❤️

In Britain there are 40+ accents. Some of the most distinctive ones are: Scottish North Irish Essex Yorkshire Cockney Brummie Scouse Geordie Welsh Norfolk Gypsy RP The British accent doesnt exist but RP (recieved pronounciation) or a similar accent is probably the most widely spoken and mostly in Southern England and what Americans think is the British accent.

Makes me laugh when Americans say “British accent”….. they mean the RP English accent. After all, a Scottish accent is (currently, at least!) a British accent. So is Welsh. Geordie, Scouse, Brummie, Yorkshire accents… all British.

@@kirstybrown1185I wish Alex Turner stopped trying to shake his Yorkshire accent off, now that he thinks he’s a crooner and he’s too good for it🤣 It’s all about how you use it, of course that sound isn’t going to work in the more US-based genres like some of the soul and blues stuff RAYE taps into, but I know it could still work if you knew how to write with it!

I always think it's interesting how she preserves her British accent but says "highway" in Escapism. instead of "motorway" which would be the word that comes to mind for Brits. But "motorway" sounds so weird and provincial! A highway is driving a convertible down the Pacific coast with the wind in your hair, a motorway is stopping off for a McDonalds at Woodall services on your way up the M1!

Excuse me, but singing words and speaking differently has always been that way. Singing the word changes the syntax and is why so many, not only British, but people of other languages sound American. One word that let me know the singer is British is “can’t” and that’s used in a lot of songs. The matter of sounding more British in your song isn’t going to change how it sounds and it sounds American.

hi. wah-er does NOT sound better than water. it just doesn’t. I do think it’s fun to hear British people say it and I’m sure there’s loads of words that sound better with a British accent, but two syllable words with a t sound in the middle, do not.

Ellie is one of the largest English artist mainstream that I ever heard embrace her accent while singing. There is a reason British singers sound “American” and it isn’t emulation. Most of the distinct characteristics of an accent aren’t possible while singing.

That and pretty much most singers are influenced by Americans as we laid the blueprint for R&B. She’s an R&B artist. Her influences are Ella Fitzgerald & Jill Scott who are both American.

@@knotmeitsyou8993 It was the low class English thats where the New England accent came from & then British loyalist & Lower class Brits developed more of what we know to be the British accent. Idk why but thats what I read. I’m surprised theres no videos about it. I wondered because I never understood why when we do old colonial films they give everyone a British accent but I never understood where the American accent came from and then learned the movies are inaccurate that the way we talk now is how the Brits use to But if you look up linguistic studies, they say the same thing

The "British accent" doesn't exist. Britain is 4 countries and accents vary in litterally every city. Britain is tiny and has much less people, but has much more regional accents. You're a country of almost 400 million people and have like 10 accents.
