When patching the boards or using filler maybe try spraying a color thats not as drastic of a change so like if you want it black spray a light gray to help blend the imperfections then spray your black
@nickslayer4368

Nice vid man, I'm a surfer from Australia, repaired and painted many a board over the years. With the patches use the excess foam from the same board and try circles instead, you'll find that if you get the plug nice and tight with the same foam from the board once you paint you shouldn't see any repair at all 👌🏻

Cool that you upcycle, but remember when you cut 12"plus off the tail and only 2 to 3" off the nose that you just pushed the rocker apex forward towards the nose 10 to 11" that would cause the board to plow or push water ,you can push it back to center or behind center a few inches but you will lose a little thickness

Why not use some filler primer instead of paint? Then paint on that. The filler primer would hide any imperfections because it goes on thicker. I use it to hide layer lines and seams in my 3D prints. Paint never hides any imperfections underneath. Usually it just makes them more visible.

Before airbrushing, tints and pigments were the standard methods of coloring boards. Tints allowed you to see through the glass to the blank while pigments just gave a flat finish with no depth. Midget Farrelly used to run his fiberglass supply company Surfblanks in Sydney, Australia. All his custom boards were pigmented. We used to joke that he'd shape all his reject blanks (rather than throw them away) and hide the faults with pigment glass jobs. (I had some of those boards so I'm speaking from experience.) Midget was very thrifty after all, some might even have called him a tight-arse. He had a short fuse but was quite talkative if you steered him onto one of his hobby-horses.

This might be a tip.. my brother in law repaired a broken stone deleo thingy he had. He did it some Japanese philosophically adroit way or some shit. But the jist of the process and technique was to embrace the repair. Highlight it. I thought perhaps you could incorporate the inserts into a graphic design maybe? Make it a highlight and an obvious celebration of the repurposing of the board as opposed to trying to make the plugs invisible. Just a thought

Thanks for posting this cool project! Just little things I noticed here and there... you've got a lot of relief cuts on the lap, just curious what that does for you? You can also save yourself some tape by hotcoating the deck immediately after laminating, brushing under the board and basting the lap line, and can sand it down before bottom hotcoat and only tape for that. Not only does it save tape, but at least for me, it require less sanding on the rails and seems more true to shape, easier workflow.

Your shaping is awesome. I have no idea what I'm talking about, but seeing the paint result, maybe use the offcuts of the same board, get a joiners dowel cutter for the small holes instead of taking g out a massive chunk. Go deeper rather than wider so the epoxy on the plug doesn't come through. Not sure if it works but it makes sense to me.

You didn’t want to set the angle of the fin boxes? Or did I miss an explanation on that step?
@Rogue_wave
Жыл бұрын
good question. Fin boxes aren’t actually installed at an angle, the fin itself is angled (futures) or the inside of the box is angled (FCS).
@jeffreyvonkphotos
Жыл бұрын
@@Rogue_wave I think he means the angle in the length of the board. How much they are straight along the rails or pointing more inward. I was also curious why you didn't just paint the board after the glassing. That way you wouldn't have seen anything?
@Rogue_wave
Жыл бұрын
Ah got it! The “toe” angle of the fin. I set it at 1/8” or maybe 1/4”. Which indicated how much the boxes are offset from the stringer. Boxes installed parallel to the rails would actually be a reverse toe angle and would feel very “loose” and unstable. I personally do not like the look of painted surfboards (paint on top of fiberglass). Plus it’s not permanent.
@ronaldbronson1285
Жыл бұрын
@@Rogue_wave as long as your futures boxes are perfectly flat you won't have a problem... But I've seen a few boards (from major brands) with futures boxes that have messed up cant. I prefer to use dummy fins to resin in the boxes and set the cant before lamination, especially on boards with lots of concave. I didn't see any patches over your boxes, do you usually add patches and you skipped it to keep the color consistent? And if so have you had any problems with the boxes? In my experience, over time futures boxes tend to lift the glass around the edges of the box while fcs tend to crack. Repairs on either type of box never last long for me either. I think it's due to the foam being compressed around the base of the box giving the fin and box more play, or the bond between the glass and foam weakening. This might be an unpopular opinion but I actually prefer the old style fcs twin tab boxes! The easiest to glass and the easiest to repair imo, but I've broken boxes on every board I've had for the past 10 years haha
