Key Scripture: 1 Samuel 15:19-23
"Why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the
eyes of the Lord?” “But I did obey the Lord,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the Lord
assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king.
The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to
God, in order to sacrifice them to the Lord your God at Gilgal.” But Samuel replied:
“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is
like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have
rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”
After the people of Israel left their 40 years of wandering in the desert, and entered into the land
God promised to give them, they asked God to give them a king, so they could be like the other
nations that had surrounded them. God didn't like this idea, because He was supposed to be
their king and they were called to be different - the Bible word is consecrated - which is a bit old
school, but it means to be set apart for a specific purpose. Essentially, God had asked them to
be different, but they kept asking to be like everyone else.
SUMMARY:
As Christians, we are called to be set apart. God is asking for a people who are consecrated to
Him and for Him. You can’t change the world if you look just like it. There is a core fear that
obedience to God means that I will lose something I value, or think I need to be happy in life. It
has been the strategy from the beginning, to place us at odds with our creator, and to instill fear
that maybe God doesn’t know best. Every time trust breaks in God or His character, the next
decision is almost always sin. Every disobedience can be solved with an unwavering and
unconditional trust in God.
