That description of anxiety when Mrs. Tyler realizes she’s lost control of the conversation was so powerful I could feel it in my stomach. Ugh! That feeling of ‘oh no this is actually a BAD situation.’ Full body shudders.

It feels like mrs harris came over to warn mrs tyler not to do this and that so as to not set her husband off. Like shes saying "please dont do this or that so I dont have to suffer the anger of my husband. Please dont set him off."

Growing up in an ab*sive household. This was me warning any of my friends if they came to hang out about my father. (We would play outside, they were never allowed to come inside)

One detail that I've always found interesting is when Mrs. Harris remarks that when Mr. Harris stays at his parents, they "turn the radio off". Which to me, shows this was something not caused by his upbringing. But his own way of having control over his wife and son's influences and agency.

Unsettled, but it was heart warming when Mrs. Tyler said she would take her daughter to the movies.

Nice reading! We all know Shirley Jackson has the BIG BANGER stories in her, but I enjoyed how subtly unnerving this was. The high points for me were the description of the husband--that he reads plays (pre-Elizabethan, of course) for fun, and stays with his mother while his wife does all the work. What a prize.

I would love to hear your analysis of We Have Always Lived In The Castle. I started reading Shirley Jackson after watching your videos and I loved her innocently horrifying characters.

It was after I read "we've always lived in the castle" that I realized Shirley Jackson was the goat

It is so different when you write "Shirley Jackson was the goat" rather than "Shirley Jackson was the GOAT". I am probably affected because I just read a story in which a character earnestly advises Batman that the Joker has probably been sacrificing goats to Dionysus again, since "tragedy" means "goat song", after all, and "Gotham" evidently means "Goat Town".

For me, it’s interesting how Mrs Harris mention how he stays at his mothers “every time” they move, as in they probably move a lot. So for me when she pointed out how the last neighbors “were so annoying by having the radio on and bringing the newspaper to the door” it feels like she tries to tell Mrs Tyler “please don’t do these things so I can stay here” I’m assuming always moving would mean Mrs Harris don’t have many opportunities to make friends and she seems to really really want to build a relationship with the protagonist, therefore asking her to “play by his rules”

I've long suspected that Ms. Jackson's husband, the critic Stanley Hyman, was the 'husband' in this story. 'James Harris' was the name given by Jackson, as an agent of chaos, or of seductive nightmares. I'm so delighted, your bringing attention to possibly a new generation of readers, the writings of Shirley Jackson. :)

Sounds like the type of people who count the seconds of their lives to prove 'superior productivity' until they meet people with real lives who laugh at their waste of time for not living a true story 😂
