I am a 12 string lover. You mentioned that Gibson made 12 string 335's in the 60's. I have a 1967 Epiphone (Kalamazoo) Riviera 12 string version of that guitar that is awesome. Only difference is that it has mini humbuckers instead of the full size ones. Personally, for me, I think the clarity of the mini humbuckers is actually more desirable for a 12 string. It's got some wear and tear on it, but the neck is still straight and it plays great. Says a lot for the 60's Gibson and Epiphone Kalamazoo era.
@allrequiredfields

I've got a '66 335 12st and it's phenomenal. Mine was cheaper than a brand new one as well, so if you're feeling like owning one, nab one soon, because they aren't going to keep getting overlooked for much longer. It's nutty too, because a 60s 335 is considerably more expensive than a 335 of the same year, and you can simply string it up with a 6 strings and a new nut and you've got a much cheaper 60's 335 as well.

I have a cheap Chinese copy of this guitar by Ktone, which I bought new a couple of years ago. In researching that purchase, I read that the Gibson Les Paul Traditional 12 was only made for the 2012 model year, and that there are only 225 of them. They sold for $3500 when new. This is from a non-authoritative source, so take it with a grain of salt.

12-string is my go-to. I wanted one so bad when I was a kid. My step-dad saved for a year to give me my first 12 string for my 18th birthday. It was stolen when I was 21. Now I have a Takamine 12string acoustic/electric that my late husband bought me back in 2014. I have other guitars - and. Basses - and I,'ve had several stolen - along with all accoutrement! Keyboard, Uke, Mandolin, Lap Steel, along with several guitars! It took me YEARS to get all of that and I went out of town for 2 weeks and came home to an .empty shell of a house! I know most gigging musicians encounter that at least once in a lifetime! So now I started slowly - bought a used 6 string for $50, then my daughter gave me a used 6 string that was - once upon a time - marketed on HSN. But it's serviceable. Disabled and widowed ,- some of the things I had before I will NEVER be able to replace - pedals - you know! All that stuff,! Even though half of my fretting hand is dead - no feeling - chords are HORRENDOUS! - I spend time playing my 12 string every day! So, if you ever get tired of it, think of me. (I will turn 64 on December 12. Hint! Hint! 😂) THAT is a BEAUTIFUL INSTRUMENT. Don't let it just sit there - pick it up and play it - let it show you what it can do! Sure, there are a lot of songs not fit for a 12 string , but there are a lot of songs just waiting to be re-imagined! ENJOY THAT BEAUTY! ❣️❣️❣️

Austin, I am a little late to this party. You mentioned the possibility of stringing it as a 6 and it reminded me of Johnny Winter at Woodstock. Yeah I come from another era. Before he got into the Firebird, he played a Fender 12 strung with 6. I don't know the reason he did this though. Maybe the spacing was conducive for fast switching between slide and picking. Interestingly he used a plumber's pipe for a slide. Just brought back memories. Your videos have educated me so much about Les Pauls. Before you, I thought an LP was an LP except for the Studio. 😂. Before the internet, I finally got my dream, a Les Paul. It was a classic and I loved the tone but hated playing it due to the neck. Except for LP Jr. I never revisited the brand until your videos. I will make an informed decision this time.

I'm used to this giant headstock since I have a period ES-335/12 (you can watch the videos I made a few years ago). What you need with a 12-strings is not distorsion but a chorus and, if possible, a stereo amplification to enjoy it more. I think the weight relief is going to work against this guitar. Bad neck dive I would suspect. I have always preferred mini humbuckers on my electric 12’s for their chime. I think the maple neck is a good idea however given the added strength as well as brighter tone. All in all a beautiful little beast! Now should I sell my Rick to get one? 🤔

While it is indeed possible, as you say, to string up a 12-string as a 6-string and play it that way, I should offer a heads-up for those who will be playing it in public: I did this with an acoustic 12 and used it for "busking" (I deeply hate that word) for a couple of years. I was driven to the edge of madness by the never-ending parade of commenters, most of whom seemed to have some kind of mystical attachment to12-strings, expressing confusion, horror, disgust, even open hostility... Some would simply point out, "You got a 12 string but it's only got 6 strings!". Others would inform me, "You're playing it wrong!". An alarming number would comment on how beautiful the "12-string" sounded, apparently hearing 12 strings when there were only 6. I rejoiced when I once again owned a real 6-string, and the 12-string wierdness stopped.

You can watch John Phillips and his repeated attempts to tune his during the MONTERY POP film. I felt bad for the guy. Oh, take the plunge and actually tune the 2nd highest string an octave UP. If you use anything over an 8 gage, it will pop. This is the perfect guitar for a back up, OR in my brothers case, a simple pop / power trio. I didn't win ( don't know if the winning designs got produced ever or not ) -probably too radical an idea at the time maybe ! I have the cherry burst version of this guitar in mint condition with the same case It is fun to play. I tried the Rick 12 string but the neck was too narrow for me. This seems wider to me. Thx for sharing

I've only seen a few Les Paul 12-strings and I've always thought that they looked really cool

When you play a couple of quite sad song riffs at 19:25, they sound brigther and more optimistic.
