As a 78 year old who is moving from my home to a basement apartment in my sons home and have been down sizing, I have had to go through all my crafts and am having a yard/estate sale. Yarns, miniature kits, paints, junk books and supplies, books, spiritual books and studies, home misc., etc., etc., etc. It is hard especially when it’s memorable things. Thankfully you don’t have to get rid of yours….you’re just leaving them somewhere for a short time. Trust the Lord that they won’t get damaged while you’re gone…store in plastic containers to protect them, and not put in cardboard or paper bags. Visit friends and family, relax and enjoy yourself.

Vivian, you and I are in the same boat! I’m the same way with silk flowers. I mean the flowers you buy at the craft store, and you make it into a beautiful arrangement, and that makes me happy too. I mean truthfully, how many flowers can you have? !! Ha!! My husband says I need to get rid of some that’s how many I have. ( many arrangements.) I mean I say ( to my husband ) I’m going to dad and mother’s grave, to put them on it. But truthfully, I want to keep everything, they are so pretty!! So I totally understand!! But you’re gonna go back to Dave’s and you will have them there! How long are you planning on staying away? I would take a few things that you know you might want to do just to keep you busy, until the time you go back to Dave’s.. I get it girl, I am in the same boat with you!! I understand!! And don’t worry about getting emotional. It’s ok, and we all understand.!! If I were with you, I would give you a beautiful arrangement of flowers. Ha ha ha!!! 💐💐 Love you!!

Lighten the load especially since you are leaving it temporarily and it will be there when you need it. More space in the minivan will allow you to keep it cooler in the summer as it will help with air flow. This is just my opinion Viv. Do what makes you comfortable.

It isn’t just stuff. It is part of you and your joyful things that make you happy. Everyone has the right to be sentimental and to love their things. When my husband was living he would always tease me about all my stuff, but I loved my stuff and he loved me, so all was well. Take it with you. It is part of you. I told my kids after I am gone they can do whatever they want to with my stuff, but for now it is mine and I want it, I understand your dilemma and I say do whatever makes you happy. That is the most important thing. Love yourself. I love you. ❤️

I understand where you’re at with the attachment to ‘your things’. I’ve learned that it usually is the only way to ‘keep one’s life in control’. After a childhood of great instability, I too hold on to dear life of all of ‘my things’! Nothing wrong with the way every individual has to go through with their life. Perhaps you can take a bit ( like a shoe box size) of every craft. You won’t feel as though you don’t have it, yet you’ll accomplish the goal of carrying less on your trip. You will return to your full inventory in the short term.🙏

Once you have stuff set aside ask yourself, will I use this this summer or not? If not then it stays at Dave's. You are not leaving it for good, you will be back. Less is better not only because it helps save on gas, but also wear and tare on the vehicle. You got this! Have a great vacation!

Always go with your gut. It's so nice that your brother and his wife let you leave your things at their place, but anything can happen to all your stuff, even in your van. Take your stuff with you, but just know that even if you lose it all, it does not matter. Our house burned down July of 2022. We lost everything even two dogs, the crocheted bedspread my 80 year old aunt had just given me the Christmas before. My 83-year-old father had just given me all of his old photo albums and I had organized them and put them in my storage room the week before the fire. Glad to be alive. Stuff does not matter. Maybe streamline your fabrics and Yarns as much as you can but I would suggest you take them with you

I have done van traveling on and off for the past 8 years. I have 1 bin for crafts. You do have to prioritize what projects you want to work on , while on the road. There is no right or wrong answer. The stuff you have to leave behind is just stuff. It will be waiting for you, when you get back. Unless you get an RV, it is going to be an ongoing battle to decide what to bring with you..

Perspective is everything. Sort in categories your supplies in the basement. Then pack your survival needs in van. Take a look at what space is left for projects supplies and art supplies as small and neat as possible. Be realistic. Seems you could crochet while visiting friends over coffee. Jewelry has many small parts and needs space when making pieces. Store that at Dave’s. I hope this helps.

I totally feel you - there are times I take things with me of sentimental value on trips and even pack close to the door so I can grab out quick in a wreck. I have 3 bags with computers and hard drives - I pack every trip and my husband complains sometimes but I am like these contain memories and info - some one breaks in it is just money making stuff or something happens to the house there is no one to protect it. Could happen with us but I have a,chance to save it or know it couldn't be done. I get very attached to things. I also feel sometimes objects have feelings and relate, how do we know - we think humans and maybe some animals are all that can have feelings how do we know - we aren't God. People who say animals don't have souls, that is not a thing you can prove theirs may be different but it may be there. I have kicked over rocks while walking and put them back together because what if they were friends or family they can't move back themselves lol - not always that bad but I have moments lol. So what if you use a little extra gas if your heart and mind feels better pack in all you want to have with you - I am always what if.... what if I might get sick or have to lay around on a trip and all I can do is read a book so pack a couple-i never have time to read but maybe lol - what if I meet someone and mention I do this or that if I have the stuff I can show them lol. What if one day you really are in the mood to crocheted or can make one for some one you meet... - I can't give you an answer of what to do but I can say you are not bad or crazy for struggling with it. Those things ate part of you. Why do you see homeless people with buggies or bags - those things are important they are their comfort and friends. On those nights when maybe you are thinking about and missing you times in life before van life, those things were with you keeping you company. It's OK to feel that way. No answer for you most of us have no idea what it is like to live as you bravely have, we can not judge. On a different note I saw a post about a place in Duluth I wish there more of. It was called Safe Bayvor something like that. A place for people living in vehicles could go and park safely over night. They had showers, laundry and other things to help make life safer and easier. I am sure more to the ministry but it was so cool - I wished there were more of those and closer to your paths.

When so much has been taken away, or it feels like it has been taken away, you want to hold tightly to what you have left. Sending hugs, and praying for wisdom for you.

Vivian, it's hard to part with items, but you are not getting rid of them ! You are thinking as if you are getting totally rid of them. You want to take a vacation ! Give them a vacation ! The material & tarn can rest for the summer in a cool dry environment ! Take the beads, & maybe a limited amount of the small plastic canvases w/ materials. The summer will go by super quick & you will reunite. Also this helps w/ the first step to separate yourself from your PTSD symptoms, which is a big part you are having " separation anxiety ". Believe me, I going through these same issues in a brick & sticks. The biggest upside is not only will the van be lighter but you will have alot more room for air flow w/ the high temps !! And room to bring back friends for your yarn & material !! Win, win, win !! Purge & pack girl , Purdue & pack !!!😂

I would pack the items as tightly as you can, maybe vacuum pack, and take them with you. Think what you would want if you were stuck somewhere, in a 3 day rain, and had to stay inside the van 72 hours straight. I will blame it on my mental illness, but I overthink everything. Have difficulty making decisions. Get stuck in the "what if" thinking.

How about labeling some box’s of your favorite things. And if you feel you really need them you can have your brother send it to you ? That way you don’t have to worry!

Incredible tiny homes has 3 grab and go homes for sale. All 3 for $75k. Or $30k . Maybe you could put one in Dave’s back yard. One has solar panels and is off grid.

Maybe just leave your yarn things and take everything else that means that much to you . Make a list of the most important thing to the least important thing and take the first four or five things. ❤

Vivian, I feel for ya. I'm having a hard time moving forward to living in a van but it has to be big enough to take all my craft supplies and other stuff. You do what feels right for you and Sammy to make you happy. If you can afford the gas which I don't really think it would make much difference. It's not like your hauling bricks. Lol. Girl, you made me cry for you. Adulting is hard sometimes. I can't wait to do the Van life. God Bless! Patti

It seems you are in a real emotional bind. You were worried about something happening to your things at Dave’s, but I think there is more of a chance something could happen to your things in the van. What if your van broke down. It might be pretty difficult to get your things back home.

I understand your dilemma, maybe stay at Daves for the hottest part of the summer. You would have all your stuff around you and you would be saving on gas plus you and Sammy could stay cooler. When it cools down a bit you could continue with your travels, taking a bit of crocheting and quilting with you as well as the lighter stuff. Vivian, I think that maybe you have come to a pinicle in your life where you know that time is passing by and soon you will have a much bigger decision to make as to where you go from here. Good luck and take care of yourself. ❤

❤ I would take a small amount of yarn. You don't have to take it all, just enough for a couple of projects on this trip. Take a few of the most recent cards, just to have them to look at. Take some of the plastic canvas. Hugs my friend. I know how it is to want your things surrounding you.

Hi Viv, I think maybe just reduce some of it and organize it into a smaller space. I think once it cools down you get showered and eat you'll figure it out. Safe travels have fun for you & Sammy. ♥🙌🤝👐🙏
