It's always a perception thing. I think knowledge and appreciation at a high level can only resonate with people who have a similar passion for whatever. Even at the same price ranges you can find some disgusting artificial grape flavored juice with some alcohol in it, and other wines that actually taste like wine, even if it ain't anything elegant. Took me a while to find not only the brands, but the types of wine of specific brands I like, and It really became something I really enjoy to drink. My favorites are malbec, merlot, cabernet sauvingon, and petite syrah guy if anyone's wondering!

I learned about wines getting "corked" the hard way. Back in the early 1990's, I was gifted two bottles of very nice Barolo (Pia Cesare I think). When we finally decided to drink them 20 years later the first one we opened was awful. Definitely corked and smelled like moldy shoes. The second one, however, was perfect and one of the best bottles of wine we've ever had.
@TomD67
2 жыл бұрын
It's interesting that the 1994, which was "corked," was the bottle with the wax top, and also the bottle whose cork broke when being removed. It also shows up (at 1:54) as the least expensive of the older wines. I wonder if that means that it's known to have multiple corked bottles. Andre said it was the greatest vintage of his lifetime for Napa wines (how disappointing he didn't get to taste it!), so it's surprising it should be less expensive than the other older wines. Anyone know why that is?
@itchy-de
2 жыл бұрын
@@TomD67 Of course it's a person thing. When you have a look at vintage charts you notice that all of the vintages in this video are exceptional. Maybe this specific wine is known for bad corks in 1994 and therefore you need to buy 2 bottles to get one that isn't corked?
@hottuna2006
2 жыл бұрын
@@TomD67 I don't think that corked 94 is indicative of its pricing; just bad luck. Although 94 was a very nice growing year in Napa Valley, 2007 was even better. Interestingly, 1985's season wasn't nearly as good as 94 or 07 but its wines are still youthful and evolving and can be aged longer. The 94 on the other hand is an early maturing wine and ready to drink now, if not passed its peak. All of these aspects along with scarcity will factor in to its pricing.

the fact the 94 bottle was cheaper than the 2007 bottle, while he's also claiming 94 was the best vintage ever for Napa, makes me think the seller knew something was up.
@Dominikmj
2 жыл бұрын
No - because the price not only depends on the age and the rating, but also on the rarity. It could be, that in 2007 Heitz just produced much less wine. And if it is a reasonable good vintage, it means, that it might be rarer than a great vintage. Also: maybe the 94 has been directly considered amazing - that means, the price might have been directly excessively expensive. And so on. The seller can not possibly know, that a wine has corkage. Sometimes the microorganism is introduced in the production - but for a top winery like Heitz the issue is definitely limited to the individual cork!

I did the same thing, but, I 'tasted' the whole bottles back-to-back. Might have a problem, but, slept pretty well.

This is so interesting! I’d love to see one (if you haven’t made it already) about how to sample a wine to tell if it’s a good candidate for aging. I feel like that might make some of these experiences more accessible? Make this information practical to the average person, right?
