I've used all DAW's over the last 12 years and Sonar by far is the most versatile, do it all DAW software on the market. Everything producers and engineers have ever asked for is all in one package. ROLAND brings decades of experience to the table that other companies can't come close to comparing to.

I'm with you on that... I have been using cakewalk since cakewalk's early days, was even part of the DX project/forum for designing plugins during the early years. I have used basically all the DAWs out there you have heard of, and some you may not have heard of, and Cakewalk is by far the best overall for the fact of easy workflow, everything has always been there for actual writing to staff for MIDI, etc., [trained musicians depend on staff, and for other DAWs you actually have to buy a separate plugin for this purpose - Cakewalk has it standard], and the plugins that come standard are world-class, so anyone can have them without spending extra money. I still haven't found a DAW to match it for these reasons and it has an easy workflow compared to others... it's all 'upfront'. I began my recording engineering using 1/2" tape on a Teac Tascam 38 with 2 - DX4Ds for Dolby noise reduction/compression, and Cakewalk got me away from having to use a splicer, grease pencils, etc., and allowed me to simply write on staff while in the same environment to fire MIDI, and Cakewalk is one of the only ones to make it easy to write your own instrument definitions for ever piece of MIDI-able hardware. Like you said, it is all in one package/environment, so you don't have to change programs/screens to get to important composition tools, etc. And the quality of sound is at least as good as ProTools, of course depending on your soundcard, etc. And the part that would make me talk good about it, even if it weren't 'all that', is the fact that they don't act like Adobe, etc. and make people pay super high prices for it... even Cakewalk by Bandlab is free with no strings, to produce your own music, which should sell it for any actual 'working' musician, who simply don't have the cash to be putting out for doing a great job with your music. I even use it for 'live' situations, as it works great for that, too, if you have a decent computer. So, I definitely agree with you on it's value and quality of production.

I wired up my very complicated guitar rack with a MIDImate and MFC10 footcontroller to switch between four amps and a ton of outboard effects. Took me an hour. I've been screwing with my SONAR control surfaces for TWO DAYS, time which would have been much better spent on music. I am trying a Novation Remore ZERO, my old Tascam 428, and even the controls on a CME keyboard. It would be awesome if just the transport worked like it should. Arg. Please let us map CCs to keyboard shortcuts.

Sonar is the best audio software for me.. There's only one big issue that I either can't resolve or isn't featured in sonar, You can't really change tempos according to markers (sure there's the manual way to do it) and video, and no real video audio options for film scoring. Anyhow, I love the software anyway and will be using it a long time.. I hope that you will add new features for video scoring soon..

I have a M-Audio Oxygen 8 that I tried to connect and use as a Midi Controller for drums using Cakewalks SI Drum Kit but all I hear is about a quarter of the keyboard through my DAW. How can I program my keys to match up with the drums? I would appreciate your help.

I've been using Cakewalk for over a decade and MIDI has never been easy to use. Even after you FINALLY get your midi keyboard to work it STOPS working for no apparent reason right in the middle of creating music and then you spend the next hour trying to get the keyboard to work again before finally throwing in the towel. I have loads of started projects that never went anywhere because of Cakewalks inability to just link up to my device without hassle. This really needs to be taken care of. I should be able to simply plug in a midi instrument and start using it. Flawlessly. Without interruption. I'm getting very fed up with this DAW after so many years. Cakewalk works great to record and mix but using to produce music with midi is almost useless. I'm so frustrated.

its funny how people just want to bash something because of their lack of experience learning a product over one they got to know . IN the last 20 + years I have experienced about every well known DAW out there , REAPER shows us that it doenst even have to be expensive to get the job done. I have used Sonar, Steinbergs various Daws, Ableton, FL Studio, REASON, Presonus Studio One, and so on. They all have a strength and a weakness. latency tweaks depending on your hardware and drivers, etc .

@lushfauna Playing an instrument is as easy as dragging it from the Browser and playing your keyboard. There are no sub-windows involved at all. It's as easy or easier than in any software on the market and could hardly be less convoluted. Drag from the Browser and play your keyboard. It's 1 step so I'm not sure what you are doing. The problem is likely that you don't have your keyboard or audio interface properly configured or enabled. Support is free and I'm sure they can help you.

Oh is that why there is a very very slight delay after I hit a note when using some synths? I need an external soundcard? (I have an run-of-the-mill HP desktop from 2009). I have X1 too. It will not let me set latency lower than 50ms in the properties window... I suppose it chose that 50ms time based on the wav profiling it does of the sound card when you install? Is that right? Thanks!!!
@TheSageCommander

StratMatt777 Hmmm, have you tried setting SonarX1 to ASIO settings? I'm not 100% sure but that might help with latency issues to where you would not notice any. In Sonar X1 go to "Edit" , "Preferences", "Playback and Recording" and where it says "Driver Mode" select "ASIO" instead of WDM or whatever it's on. Make sure to click "Apply". This might depend on whether your soundcard supports ASIO . If for some reason it does not then you can download ASIO 4all on this website www.asio4all.com . Let me know if this helps.

@Cokoholicar Sure you can. If you have the right audio hardware and drivers, but you have to pay for it. You can't get everything for free. You spend your money based on what you want and need. If you need to export MP3 using Cakewalk Sonar, then you pay the $20 for that feature. I paid for the MP3 encoder for the convenience. I paid $299 for my USB audio interface because my mobo's onboard soundcard and drivers were insufficient. Find a product that meets your needs and level of simplicity.

Sonar is great. Is it complicated?- yes, but so is a 48 track mixer with ins,outs, buss and effects sends + returns, etc . Every studio is unique. If you want to record and engineer and produce great tracks - it takes a lot of reading, experimenting and rewiring- in other words- WORK. I'm sick of the lazy whiners that critisize anything harder than Pacman. If you don't want to work your tracks will suck. Get a $20 Casio and run your mouth to the canned beats- simple enough? you have to go to edit at the bar at top of screen, go to preferences, there you will see list for audio, midi, both have recording and playback, so it depends on your set up, but u must pick what is sending to PC and what is playing it back, if you have your midi device hooked to speakers you will choose it for both because midi travels both ways, if your sound is coming from PC or source of PC you need to choose what source your playback comes thru......also all midi controllers will do something to your software, but it's easier if you have a midi controller that uses your saw, novation uses ableton,,, Cakewalk sonar 3 is a professional recording program, you don't have to have a controller for this program, you can program whatever instrument you want on midi tracks, and instruments on audio,,,,,it takes some time, my suggestion is to learn what the terms mean, make a list of what your trying to do and do a search for each one,,,,,Cakewalk was the big dog before protools.....but all daw software has basics, dont get cought up in the extras,,, also you may need a patch program for your controller to work......I watched hours if video, starting with basics, write what steps you take it you will just repeat mistakes....hope that helps.....
