I've adopted a two plugin solution for this, and IMO it works really well. For the headphone calibration, there is the highly underrated ToneBoosters Morphit - for 29EUR it has a huge range of headphone models, you can choose what target curve to correct to, and you can simulate other headphone models. And you can demo it for basically as long as you need with full functionality. I highly recommend checking this out. I then follow that with dearVR Monitor. I've also tried Hornet VHS, and it's not as good as either of those two at either calibration or room emulation.

I am a SoundID guy and plan on getting the virtual monitoring on payday. Was considering the Slate Digital headphones, but I think I’ll just stick to what I got. Great video, thanks!

Setting up a Surround Sound Studio and have played with the Free Dear VR Software. The $99 price tag is very intriguing

The SonarWorks ReferenceID VST did not behave particularly well on my system. It crashed in Steinberg Wavelab Pro, Crashed in Ableton Live 10. It behaved better in J-River Media Center but it still had stability problems. I'm not a fan of having room correction in software that runs on a PC. It can be highly dependent on you source file. It might work at 24bit/48KHz and be a total crash fest at 24bit/192KHz. The Slate VSX software works the best for me and unlike you I appreciate what it does. It is pretty stable up to 24bit/192KHz. For studio monitors I much prefer the IK Multimedia ARC system.

Fair enough, yeah agreed, workflow issues often steer us in a particular direction with these things 😄I really wanted to love vsx (I really tried!) but in the end I couldn’t live with those headphones. Incidentally, did you see my Neumann ndh30 review? Worth a watch for sure 👍🏻

Hi, thx for these reviews. My question is: I have a pair of open headphones, and for mic recording, I may eventually need a closed one in the long term to avoid sound bleeding (I guess that's the term). In that case, since probably the VSX is not perfect but still better than mixing on my HD599, do you think it is a good deal? Or would you still opt for a better pair of headphones + software for the same price?

Many thanks, yes I would certainly advise other headphones if you need closed back. The value is just so much better with beyerdynamic/sennheiser etc as most of the cost of VSX is for the software 👍🏻

Just switched from my long time and trusted hd650’s and tested the NDH 30 along with the 490 pro. Both sets are good step up from my hd650 imo, but I gave the edge to 490 with slightly better sound stage and bass extension. It came with DearVR mix too and have to agree that the rooms are excellent. More convincing than the SoundID. I found the eq correction quite similar for the 490 in both softwares. Haven’t tried the 650 with DearVr but will have a listen to see if it is brighter as you say. So glad I didn’t bother with VSX though. Great video 👍

Thanks for this comment! I recently got some 490s and didn't notice the voucher in the box for DearVR!!! I've got it now tho!! I must learn to savour the unboxing process more and go through all of the contents. haha

I've got Sonarworks (with calibrated headphones) feeding into dSONIQ Realphones. I wonder whether something similar could be done feeding Sonarworks into DearVR MIX...
