"Eero Saunamäki commissioned the work from me a few years ago. He sent me excellent material on new recorder textures as a source of inspiration. From the start, it was clear that I would use five different sizes of recorders, essentially an entire family of instruments. I selectively use sonata form, allowing fantasy and melodiousness to flow as needed. This often happens in my musical language. I believe that the union of energetic pulse music and singing melody continues to work in music, time and again.
Wild and Funky, true to its name, is modified from dance rhythms and the pulse of a hot jazz combo for this instrument combination. One of Eero's fundamental wishes was to incorporate playful and swift Linkola funk into the piece in some new form. The sopranino recorder's sharp and clear sound was a perfect fit. Balancing the volume levels between the piano and recorder is one of the challenges of the piece. Being a pianist, I could imagine this. I received excellent feedback from both Eero and Marko on several balance issues.
Mysterious Traveller section showcases the other extreme of the register, the bass. The rich, soft, and somewhat mystical sound of the instrument is very descriptive and provides the composer with ample mood. It's challenging to find an equivalent among symphony orchestra instruments for this one. The alto and bass flutes are perhaps the closest. For this section, I also wanted Eero to create effects that are drawn into the score ad lib.
Sea in C is based on a variation of my old song The Great Sea. Its starting point was Eskimo poetry. The inspiration for the composition comes from my childhood. I spent all my childhood and youth summers in the archipelago. I now live permanently on an island by the sea. For this part, I wrote into the score a call for ethnic sounds, extensions, vibratos, and glissandos ad lib.
Autumn Lied is true to its name. A long-line melody that seeks the beauty and legato of the Lied style. In the piano texture, I strive to emphasize the importance of legato and the essence of melodiousness. Perhaps the part exudes a kind of melancholy. It is written for the tenor recorder, which is quite different from an opera tenor.
Masquerade Dance is the finale of the work. I had initially decided to use a palette of playful texture and rhythmic variation in this part. The soprano fits best, also in terms of balance, into my composition, which is at times even flashy for the piano."
