Beautiful. Good work, Joshua, on blending the three movements. As always, I love watching and listening to you play the piano. Yes, I would like to work hard and learn this piece. You make learning to play the piano so effortless and easy but from my experience over the last 4 1/2 years learning to play this instrument is a slow process with many many hours of repetition and hope. You provide the hope. Thanks.

Yes, I was very pleased also with the technical aspect of putting the 3 movements into 1 video with links and brief title breaks. (Thankfully my son knows how to do that since it is not my area of expertise. ) That makes it so much easier if you are just working on one portion of it at a time and just need to listen to that part. I have put in my many, many hours of repetition also to provide that appearance of effortlessness. But most glad of all that I can give you hope! It's worth the effort. NM

Something I am noticing here... I downloaded my copy of the Sonatina from Sheet Music Plus. It has staccatos (or, is that staccatoes?) in the bass line, for example, at measure 16 of the minuet. Before I listened to this video, I was playing is legato, as staccato just sounded too, well, “chopped”. Now, I observe you’re doing the same. Is your music marked with the staccato dot and you are ignorning it in the name of artistic style? Or, is your arrangement different from mine? As it is, having grown up on Swing, Jazz, and The Great American Songbook, I tend to throw a bit of swagger into things as it is. My instructor is learning to deal with it...
@92pianokeys40

Yes, you are absolutely correct. There are staccatos marked in measure 16 of the minuet on my edition as well. Obviously I wasn't "feelin' it" that way in measure 16 when I made this video. Since this was composed in the late Romantic Period, I would assume that the staccatos indicated are on the original score, and are not simply an editorial addition which you would often have in earlier music from the Baroque era. So I would recommend that you play it as your instructor prefers, if they commented on it, yes, the correct articulation would be staccato. Always good to clarify since I don't always adhere perfectly to the score and with some pieces there are several varying editions. --Norma

I'm a frustrated arranger. My "inner Nelson Riddle" ignores the staccato because it sounds dry and stale with them. Just... wrong!
@92pianokeys40

@@The-Friendly-Grizzly Well, I certainly don't mind if you play those legato. With my students, I make sure that they understand the notation and are choosing to do something different and that it isn't just an "oops". Then we just re-name deviating from the score to "arranging", "creativity", "art", "interpretation", "style". :)

Where are all the lifts, slurs, and accents?
@92pianokeys40
5 жыл бұрын
In the first movement, I did not use the pedal and did the slurs, staccato, and rests as written. But in the 2nd and 3rd movement, I chose to use the pedal which doesn't allow for as much clarity for the articulation. I mentioned it in the description below the video. It was just a choice I made based on personal preference. Yes, you can of course, not use any pedal in the 2nd and 3rd movements and thereby have greater clarity and definition. Do what you prefer or of course, whatever your teacher is asking of you. --Norma
