I engage everyday with a story to tell. I have many stories to tell. I want to describe things to you. I want to engage with others to make sure we understand one another with anything that can lift our moments. I engage with people. Everywhere. When the moment is opportune, I'll ask things like "what do you do for fun when you're not working?" "Have any creative interests or cool hobbies?" People may be shy or to busy to go into great detail, but sometimes you hear "I like to crochet with my cat in my lap" or "I like to read", I scrapbook", or "I like to relax and watch sports". You get to engage. As an artist and a poet, I'm constantly on the hunt for interesting moments where I can just take so much of it in and see if there's an inspiration for something creative. I love it.
My buddy Richard reached out to me after my physical scare and we talked about getting together for some music exchange. He's written a few songs on guitar to sing and wanted to run them by me. I was game. Last night he arrived where I prepared the dining room area to accommodate two acoustic guitars, a laptop, microphone and stand and two butts sitting at a bar table.
He's a marriage counselor by day, has a podcast (looking for interesting people to do a zoom conversation. Here's his website: www.ricardodelcalifornia.com Reach out to him.
I've had people share with me some of their talents so I can improve mine. So, I return the energy onto those wishing to poke my mind on how to improve on something they're learning: music, art, gardening, cooking, painting, writing.....whatever I know, I'm going to share.
You get those moments where people come to you for the soul of artistic expression.
Having been a live professional performer for 35 years, you get a wealth of experiences that are valuable and important to pass on. I'm not master, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve.
What do I tell Richard? A couple of dozen things but the most important is to engage the audience. You're telling a story. Make the story compelling, clear, audible, melodic, poetic, likable where people want to sing it again. Says a guy who doesn't write for guitar and voice. But I make those cover songs I do my own. What does that mean? I interpret the version people know into my own way. I think the original artists do in fact enjoy when others make efforts to find new interpretations to their music.
Clarity in sound and over pronounce the words, speak them slowly, move your mouth in larger formations, resonate in your nasal cavities, and more and more. Learn the world and feel them. If they don't move you, they're not going to move an audience.
It's pretty simple. But it takes work and intuition.
