Zeppelin experienced by the people of today is not the same as we felt. A different head space...a different era. Nevertheless, today it's still accessible and appreciated but from a different angle.. Interesting how environment affects interpretation perspective.

Wow. Haven't heard this song in so long, I forgot how great it is. I used to listen to this album in the dark, and every time the opening chord of Black Mountain Side broke in over the fadeout of this track, it was just as jarring as the first time and gave me chills.

Jimmy wrote this song about a break-up he'd had. I've told others that I like how the organ sounds like it's calling the congregation to church and once everyone is there, Bonzo's cymbals feel like a bucket of cold water just got thrown in your face because Zep is about to lay down some reality here. This was the first time Jimmy played a pedal steel guitar which gives the "swooping" tone from low to high. He said it was there in the studio but he didn't know how to tune it because he'd never played one so he noodled around with it and did his best. Jimmy plays all guitars plus, rarely, something different, like this pedal steel here. John Paul Jones plays bass plus anything else with keys like piano, organ, synth, etc., and mandolin. John Bonham (pronounced kind of like "bah-nm") is drums while Robert is vocals and harmonica. Your comment of them coming up with new sounds is an example why I suggest to people who are really trying to learn to start at the beginning - they had sounds like this on their debut album and the progression through the catalogue is incredible.

I heard John Paul Jones father was a pastor that taught him to play.

@@NAIATHEDRAGON Partially - John Paul Jones' parents were travelling entertainers in what was like the UK's version of America's Vaudeville scene. His dad played instruments while his mom sang and I'm not sure if only she danced or if they both did. So, yes, his dad taught him to play organ and how to read music, he was not a pastor. I also can't recall at the moment if his dad taught him other instruments in addition to organ. His dad didn't teach him bass, though; he picked that up on his own. Where you might be getting it confused is John Paul Jones *was* choirmaster at his local church when he was 14.

John Paul Jones, Zeppelin's "Secret Weapon." Out of the Limelight, but every bit as crucial to the success of the band as the other, co-equally stupendous talents. He of the Hammond organ, AND the bass!

The organ John Paul Jones is playing is a Hammond B3. Back in the day if you were in a working band , and you were fortunate enough to have a keyboard player with a Hammond, there's nothing you couldn't do. If you didn't have a Hammond and a solid keyboard player that knew what he was doing, you would have an extremely boring set list. For example, you couldn't play Yes, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and the list goes on. If I was to guess, maybe one in 30 bands would have a Hammond in their arsenal. The fulness, richness and the warmth of the sound for me, as a guitar player, gives you an amazing amount of freedom to color and express whatever you are playing...anything from Gospel to acid rock, in a magnificent way. There is no limit to what you can do with a Hammond. It's a working beast!

I saw them in the summer of '69 in Cleveland. They played their entire first album and most of the as yet unrealeased second. Fou $4.50 I was in the fifth row aisle seat 20 feet from the stage. Low fived Page as they walked out right past me! Then I went home in time to see Armstrong step out on the Moon! 53 years and a lifetime ago and I remember it like yesterday! Have a wonderful trip down the Zeppelin rabbit hole! Keep them coming!

the info regarding JPJ and the organ is right. His first instrument was piano but then he played organ in church from when he was 14. He gets writing credit along with Jimmy Page for this track. ( Jimmy Page was also a choir boy!!! )Led zep refused to release singles because they did not want to be defined by a few famous songs - that is why it is good to listen to the albums otherwise you miss out great songs like this one. I still think you should do a live version of dazed and confused at this stage - either the London 69 or the Albert hall 70 would be great until you can find the MSG version. if you carry on with the album maybe do Black mountain side amd Communication breakdown together. Hope you are staying warm over there!!

I think it's great that you are trying to mimic what you are hearing. I have a feeling you would absolutely love drums. It has a fundamental intrinsic feeling of that it just feels naturally good somehow to stomp on things and pound on things and then to do it in rhythm.
