Tokyo Love Hotel is Rina calling out foreigners who fetishize Japanese culture as a whole, as Rina has finally learn to really appreciate her herritage.

It’s so cool that she can make a song that has multiple meanings, like it can be personalized to what you take it for. And yeah, in her Song Association video, she says that the touristy side if Japan can be toxic sometimes. In Japanese culture, people are fairly reserved not confrontational in public, but tourists and foreigners don’t always understand that, and it hurts to see the culture being disrespected like that.

"Comme des garçons" is a Japanese fashion Brand, but Comme des garçons means "Like boys" while "Like the boys" means "Comme les garçons" (demonstrative)

New subscriber, love your reactions so much! XS is about capitalism, kind of a fake flex song, such a great concept. But your interpretation with the identity stuff I think also applies and fits in within the album theme! Love that we can interpret so many cool things from music. Can't wait to see more reactions!

A lot of the production you really loved here was by Clarence Clarity, he has solo albums and you’ll immediately know which songs on Sawayama he produced when you listen to them. I think the way she deals with family stuff, and identity more broadly, is really nuanced and complex.

Love seeing your reaction to Rina! She is such an incredible songwriter & artist! You were pretty spot on with most of your interpretations! The video for STFU further illustrates how the song is about racial microaggressions and how when confronted with them she has to make the decision to address them in the moment and run the risk of making those around her uncomfortable or internalize the anger, the song is a cathartic release of those emotions!
