Mushroom Hill is one of my favorite levels in all of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and conveniently made its way into the 3DS version of Sonic Generations.
Mushroom Hill commences the second half of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, as Sonic & Tails land in a forest full of huge mushrooms after preventing the Death Egg from being released from its Launch Base.
With a lack of water to avoid drowning in from here on, and also the lack of any potential music based off of Micheal Jackson's songs, the Sonic & Knuckles levels altogether have a different feel to them compared to the Sonic 3 levels. Since this is the merged game, that means you can have Tails in the S&K levels at all!
--------------
The S3&K version of Mushroom Hill has Knuckles (badly) hiding a secret from Sonic & Tails. They find out that it was a Special Stage ring flashing with multiple colors that took them to the Hidden Palace. Remember that as soon as you touch that ring, you can no longer become Super Sonic, but if you're patient enough, you can make up for that by becoming HYPER Sonic!
I know the location of every single Special Stage ring. There's a total of 5 in Act 1, and 6 in Act 2.
2 of them are each for the S3&K's version of Sonic/Tails & Knuckles' own starting routes, so they're both unavailable in Sonic & Knuckles by itself.
2 of them are both in a Knuckles-exclusive route in Act 2. If you're patient and/or have enough time, you can have Knuckles get every single Special Stage ring in Act 2, but not with Sonic and/or Tails... unless you want to unleash the extra, glitch-related effort to get Sonic & Tails to these, anyway.
Anyway, back to Hidden Palace.
--------------
When Sonic arrives there, the Master Emerald takes his Chaos Emeralds and converts them into uncharged Super Emeralds. Sonic must stand on each of them to be warped into a Special Stage.
The Special Stages for the Super Emeralds are the exact same ones for the Chaos Emeralds if you're playing Sonic & Knuckles by itself. The only difference is that the Hidden Palace is letting you choose your own order of getting the Emeralds. I just chose the order that they would automatically be in otherwise.
Super Emeralds & Their Special Stage Field Patterns:
Green - Green & Yellow
Orange - Orange & White
Purple - Magenta & Yellow
Blue - Blue & Yellow
Grey - Light Bluish-Green & Purple
Red - Light Green & Purple
Cyan - Light Blue & Magenta
Getting all of these Super Emeralds causes the Master Emerald to glow, and grants Sonic the ability to become Hyper Sonic.
More powerful than Super Sonic, Hyper Sonic can double jump in one of eight directions in a flash, a flash of which kills all enemies on the screen, but not bosses. He can also breathe underwater, but that ability is pointless now until I beat the game and play through Sonic 3 levels again as Hyper Sonic.
Super Sonic has ended his course of the my playthrough, but now Hyper Sonic will take his place for the rest of the game. Because of this, Sonic has 3 possible endings for Sonic: One as Hyper Sonic, one as Super Sonic, and one without either, sticking with regular Sonic.
