linktr.ee/bandmayer?... Favorite pep band style pieces originally for three sousaphones. Played here on a Schiller copy of the Holton MH102 Bb marching French Horn.
Ive always wanted to see these things on a actual marching field.

The original design was by Holton. This is a Schiller copy. Essentially it’s like other marching Bb French horns but it preserves the horn bell shape. In practice it’s front heavy and there is a more obstructed view that a normal mellophone bell.

I got it from a friend, this is a Schiller brand, it’s a knockoff of the original design for this marching French horn which was made by Holton.

arent marching french horns called mellophones? or is it a different type of marching french horn
@BandMayer
2 жыл бұрын
In this case it’s built in the length and taper of a the Bb side of a double (French) horn which is 9 feet long. It’s got a horn mouthpiece and uses Bb horn fingerings reading an F part. Mellophone uses a modified trumpet mouthpiece and is build in F 1/2 the length of a F horn. Horn being 12 feet and mellophone being 6 feet. So with a mellophone you would read and F part but with trumpet fingerings. Mellows are also build closer to corners in terms of taper of the tubing.

Marching french horns use conical tubing and are bell front but use a french horn mouthpiece Mellophones use straight(?) tubing and are bell front but use a special mellophone mouthpieve that resembles a trumpet mouthpiece (which has a shorter shank, similar rim diameter, and deeper cup)

While it does play the mellophone part in a marching band, mellophones are 6’ horns in F that use a deeper cup trumpet type mouthpiece and trumpet fingering pattern in the transposed F music. Marching French horns (either wrapped like this or wrapped like a mellophone/marching baritone) is a 9’ horn making it the same as the thumb (Bb) side of a double French horn. If you read mellophone music transposed in F then you use thumb side fingerings like reading horn music. If you are reading Bb marching horn music then you read it more like F horn fingerings on a concert f horn.

@BandMayer

So there was a movement in the 70’s or 80’s to make “marching French horns” because the mellophones at the time like the Conn 16E just didn’t sound that great. Almost all marching French horns are in Bb which is like having just the trigger side of the double French horn. That makes the fingerings a little weird in the lower range. But most of them are wrapped to look like marching baritones-ish. This horn was originally made by Holton, to try and make a more horn sounding alto brass. The problem with it is that it’s front heavy and the bell limited your field of vision. But a friend of mine had this one for a funk band an when he was selling it I couldn’t pass it up!

Not unless you like to for the novelty value. A modern F mellophone would be much more stable and suitable for HS or college marching band.

@gabe5819 Yamaha is pretty standard, the problem is they have very height tolerance valves so you have to be careful about bumping the slides or letting it sit. My favorite I’ve played is a king tempo, I don’t remember the model number.

As I listen to it just now it sounds like I’m riding the front edge of the beat(reacting to the metronome) when people play this live they are usually reacting to the beat which delays the melody by a fraction. Thanks for watching :)

Yup! It’s a Bb french horn so it can read F horn parts using the Bb side of a double horn fingerings. It can also read trombone parts in bass clef with baritone fingerings or trumpet parts In Bb treble clef if you play an octave up.
