9th track on Sonic Sums 1999 album "The Sanity Annex".
There is a reason I usually upload full albums. To create and arrange a consistent album (that sends you on a musical or emotional journey) is an artform in itself.
A - well produced - album can give you a whole different experience than just some random songs, played in a random order.
One of the reasons I can say this with confidence is "The Sanity Annex", an album that absolutely should to be listened to in its entirety. This pearl of Indie Hip Hop accomplishes what so many artists claim to deliver but fail to ever do so: trigger your emotions and your imagination and on the long run touch your soul.
To enjoy all of this, you might need to be patient, take your time.
But: patience is rare these days, modern humans are not patient anymore. Not patient enough to hold people accountable for their bullshit. Not patient enough to deal with long lasting crises.
We are not patient enough to listen to others explaining things, not patient enough to read. And not patient enough to listen to songs longer than 2 minutes - or even full albums.
But for "The Sanity Annex" you need patience. Or to put it in other words: Chill the fuck out, kick your feet up, light a cigarette or whatever and enjoy this peace of art.
The Sanity Annex is slow at times, very slow. But it's all part of a musical journey, that is quite unique. It's mainly the very atmospheric and dense instrumentals that make the difference. But also Rob Sonic (who is the only rapper that appears throughout the whole album) has his share on the laid back, almost hypnotic experience. Sonic, who would later on be on El-Ps label Def Jux and who would become one third of Hail Mary Mallon (with Aesop Rock and DJ Big Wiz) delivers very sharp and well-crafted rhymes while not being to pushy. That itself is already remarkable, but on top he manages to grab your attention and not let it go until the album is over. He is the guide that leads you through the different soundscapes on "The Sanity Annex". This album is rich in everything good music needs: warm and catchy melodies, appealing rythms, clever messages and overall the power to get through to you (as long as you are willing).
I do not own any rights to this but as a rap enthusiast I see it as my duty to upload the gems, no one has ever heard of.
