He wrote some wonderful music. It’s a shame he set his talent aside. He could have still blessed us even as a minister. God Bless Sonny, and maybe Sonny is singing with the Angels. ✨🕊✨

Trivia: This was the first song Sonny wrote for Cher. They had no money. They had to ask their friends for money for the studio. The harmonium player, a friend of Sonny's did it for free. But in the studio Cher got stage fright and couldn't sing. So Sonny said he would sing with her and made up that high harmony above her. Then Cher recorded it. True story

"Baby Don't Go" was Sonny and Cher's first hit record. But although the lyrics plead for someone's significant other not to leave them, ironically, Sonny and Cher would get divorced about five years after this appearance with Mike Douglas.

No. It was SONNY not Cher who was the creative genius on that stage. Without Sonny, there never would have been a Cher. He did all the hard work behind the scenes (and in front of the scenes as well) while Cher simply had God given gifts (singing talent and a natural but "flawed or different" beauty). Sonny wrote, selected, arranged, and produced the music. He created their look and comic style. He came up with the concept of their stage and television shows (and their two movies). He discovered Cher and made music for her to shine. She was unable to do it alone so she asked him to sing with her and despite him not having traditional good looks or a great singing voice, he STILL made music that wouldn't be the same had anybody other than Sonny been singing it with her. Their chemistry and love for each other was so infectious that you couldn't help but love them back. Without Sonny, Cher became less "real" and more of a lampoon style diva who has exaggerated her once endearing natural mannerisms to the point of self caricature. But with Sonny, she was the kind of shy girl with the potential to bust out and be wild when appropriate that every guy wished he had in his life. She used to be like Janet from "Three's Comany" or Mary Anne from "Gilligan's Island" in that respect. Solo Cher became a totally different creature. Still unique and one of a kind, but I'd take the Cher from Sonny & Cher over solo Cher any day of the week.

@@elfhermie Mate, Sonny took everything after the divorce and basically had to start again. Sonny and Cher worked together to create what they had. If Cher sang terribly they would be no where. So your point is not even a point. Because they worked together.

@@elfhermie Couldn't agree with you more. Spotlight singers (especially good looking diva types) get way more credit than they deserve while the hard working behind the scenes folks (the ones who actually CREATE and come up with the songs, music, and visions we love) never get their proper dues. Sonny was responsible for writing and producing hit after hit, and for creating the characters of Sonny & Cher (Cher on her own would have never become the diva that we know today but for Sonny coming up with a straight man/nagging wife character for their live shows). Cher is a legit diva who became a solo star in her own right (well, with the help of professional songwriters who wrote her material and designers who created her wardrobe), but Sonny deserves mad respect.
