Sonny is a monster with a technique that is just humbling. I found out about Sonny through an Edward Van Halen interview. He was Eddie’s favorite slide player and you can hear how Sonny influenced him on the song “Ballot or the Bullet” on the VH III album. So thank you Edward for giving that shine, just like Eric did later with his Crossroad shows. I love how Sonny brings out the fire in Eric on this particular performance. Great players tend to do that to one another and when it happens, it’s so special and rare. I love these players and will always be inspired by their God given gifts. I miss you Eddie, you were simply the GOAT and will forever be missed. 🙏 🎸

One of my favourite live performances of Sonny Landreth. The drummer you see in the background is Doug Belote. He hails from New Orleans, Louisiana. This is his first really important gig. He was asked by Sonny Landreth to fill the spot and tells the story of how he was really shaking when about to play in front of 50,000 people. He says, "I'm thinking, Eric Clapton just told me to count it off with 50,000 people watching." What a great story!

I always reckon it's the sign of a really REALLY accomplished virtuoso musician. The difference is that, when a solo virtuoso comes on stage everyone else sounds plainer, when a true virtuoso comes on he sounds as good but everyone else also sounds better. (Moore v Gorham. No contest for most of course but, personally, I always rate Gorham higher as a band musician.) It's the 8th, 9th and 10th Buddhist Bulls in action!

2:00 is why Clapton is a legend. It's his thought process for me. How he holds that unison bend and adds tension to his intro of his solo. I know hundreds of guitarist that could've started off with a bunch of notes but is telling a story and it comes off almost like he's speaking. It may not be one of his greatest guitar solos but he's doing what he does and he steps out to open the floor for Sonny. He's playing along with the band not trying to overplay. He gets in and out never overstaying his welcome.
