Not to be rude wasn't that talented at all. He just hit hard. Watch him just following around in a circle. He didn't even know boxing 101 In how to cut off the ring or close distance. Besides Ali who did ever really fight? Paterson was a middle weight with a glass jaw who moved up to heavyweight and was protected.

@Dylon Mc Liston wasn’t the most talented as this guy saying But he was very talented He had god giving talent with his long reach and enormous first He have the biggest fist in boxing history So that’s he physique He also have the best left jab in boxing history Maybe the best jab ever It fast strong have so much power in it and break your guard Now if that wasn’t enough Liston know how to take advantage of his long reach He fire his jab having his left foot ahead of his right one give his side to his opponents and extent his shoulder so he again extra reach by doing that His defense and offense was very good combined with his physique attributes and physical strength and extremely good jab + using both of his hands just as good Made Liston one of the most talented and gifted boxer ever

@@dylonmc4323 Liston was extremely talented. You don't have a clue. MOST fighters don't cut off a ring. Liston was a boxing conservative not a pressure fighter.He was old here as well. He boxed people's heads off with his stiff jab, and then set them up with hooks and uppercuts KO'd into oblivion. Paterson was a unified champion who beat the man who beat the man. He was protected but chose to fight the avoided Liston. If you're asking who did Ali, the man with the most top contender wins in boxing history fought you don't know boxing. Patterson, Norton, Frazier, Foreman, Lyle, Williams, Liston, Folley, Cooper, Terell, Bonavena,.

Sonny preferred to lead with his left foot always so his right was always in position for a powerful blow. Even if that means letting his man escape a corner. Sonny was of the joe Louis ilk meaning he believed you could run but not hide. Most boxers cant box as well on the backfoot so not like he needs change what works for what he should do from a technical standpoint. Example, how many rounds did bill win here? None.

Only one man came to fight and it was the man who won. McMurray was a sparring partner for George Foreman in "the rumble in the jungle" and this fight shows why. It was his stray elbow that caused the cut that postponed the fight for a month. He simply wasn't in Sonny's class.

Liston was a very short lived transitional champion. I say transitional because he was a great fighter of the 1950s that had trouble in the 1960s as heavyweights got bigger and faster! Liston was very talented! But he was only 6’1 and fought between 199-226 with 212 being his prime weight! In the Marciano era Liston was an amazing force, over 200 pound heavyweights where unheard of. By 1964 when Clay and Terrell showed up at 6’3 and 6’6 we saw a much different breed of heavyweights! Even Foreman turned pro in 1968. Sonny best years where when he fought as the big man! He would struggle against any top modern heavyweight! Remember the man was born in 1930 as it now seems. He was a genetic freak for 1950s and early 1960s. Another myth about Liston was his reach, I have studied Liston for years, style, body size. Liston’s real reach was 80 1/2 inches! No where near the 84 inches as claimed! Ali actually had a longer reach then Liston as you can see in their fight in Miami Beach in 1964! Ali’s reach was 78 or 79 inches! However, Liston had very broad shoulders and huge hands, and long fingers all are what we call waisted reach in boxing! Your real boxing reach is from the the armpit to the end of the knuckles on the glove! Not wingtip to wingtip as they use to measure! If my fingers are 8 inches long that does me know good in a boxing match.
@paulweir5031

You studied what?! Another Liston put down merchant who knows as much about boxing as my arse knows about snipe shooting. Ali would have had his hands full with the prime Sonny, and why mention Terrell? Ernie the Octopus couldn't have beaten the Liston of 1970. You are incorrect in both of your guesses at the reaches of Ali and Liston and your spelling and grammar are appalling.

Cleveland Williams was a big guy. And going back further in time, Max Baer was big, and his brother Buddy Baer was huge. Big heavyweights have been around since the beginning. Going back to Liston: Ali was no bigger than Williams. But he was fast and very elusive, two attributes that befuddled Liston. I don't think it was Ali's size that troubled Liston. Liston beat guys bigger than Ali. Chuck Wepner was 6'5". And outside of Ali, how many guys really troubled Liston? Not many. Moreover, the second Ali/Liston fight was a bit suspicious in nature, so that result perhaps may not be legit.

Man common! Rocky Marciano alone destroyed 5 guys well over 200 lbs. The biggest being 6' 5 250 lbs Jesse Willard who knocked out jack Johnson was 6'7. Buddy Baer was 6'5 235 lbs. Primo Canero was 6'7 250 lbs and could actually box. He went on to be wrestling champion with 300 victories and only one loss. Ther has always been big heavyweights it's just that in the 50s you had some really fast, good, smaller boxers who could outfight them.

Liston’s reach was pure Bs of the day! His reach was billed at 84 inches! It was later measured by Las Vegas Athletic commission at 80 1/2. Plus Ali actually had a longer boxing reach at 78 or 79 inches in the ring. Back then they measured reach from wingtip to wingtip! Liston had very broad shoulders, huge hands and long fingers, useless in boxing where it’s only from the arm pit to the end of the Knuckles on the glove. Liston had a shorter reach the. Ali in the ring and that surprised the hell out of him.
