Always exciting to record some good quality gear. So you can just imagine how excited I have been the whole weekend being away, and thinking about getting to record my new SQ2 drums. To be honest, I was weary that I would be underwhelmed, or that it would simply sound like my other Sonor drums. With the SQ2 being a custom designed kit, every item I specced was for a purpose - at the very least based on what I know about drums and sound shaping. But are my theories correct? The following were within my thought process anyway;
• the thin shells for the toms were intended for maximum resonance, warmth and response. I also hoped to create quick/punchy tones thanks to the shallow depths. This also helps me position them with ease, specially with the kick being 24"
• medium shell weights for the 20" and 24" kicks and snare drum were meant to help with extra volume / punch / projection. Needless to say sacrificing a bit of resonance which is an advantage in itself for control.
• I went for Beech as far as the shell material, having fallen in love with this particular wood with my Vintage series drums. I would go as far as saying that it's a nice balanced wood.
The verdict? I may be talking too soon, or maybe I am still way too excited finally owning such drums, but I feel that I have achieved some sort of hybrid of my SQ1 and old Prolite kit as well. The 45º degree bearing edge definitely gives it a more 'contemporary' tone and attack and less reminiscent of the vintage series. But lets see how I go with trying out other drum head combinations, tuning and muffling. The Remo Colortone batter heads definitely accentuates more attack. But I couldn't be happier with these drums. Very happy.
