Great review, but I prefer the background and foreground Bokeh in the 100mm STF lens. I enjoy the way it keeps the subject's eyes, nose, lips, and forehead in sharp focus while having a soft rounded bokeh in background without the distracting football-shaped edges requiring tons of work in post. This gives the subject a 3-D pop to the overall photo. Colors are great as well when there is enough light. You just have to ensure that the background and foreground has enough adequate separation, light and balance. You cant just shoot any kinda way with this lens. Pictures with this lens must be well-planned ahead and well thought out artistically before touching this lens. This lens is a gem when you let it shine and its a specialty and one of a kind and will make your pictures stand out from the rest. That is the secret of this lens. This lens also seems great for group shots and you don't have to worry about out of focus subjects so much. I also like how you pretty much are just using the lens wide open on portraits (especially close up portraits) all the time.. No need to worry about the settings. This lens could also dubb as a macro lens as well, focusing 1 foot closer that the 85, allowing you to get more use out of the aperture ring by stopping down at close focusing distance while maintain creamy bokeh. Yeah I know this lens is not as fast as the other GM primes, but you just have to turn up the heat, turn on the light, find the light. That what photography is all about - the study of light. We need to slow down and experiment with getting more light into the lens to see its glory. And get closer with this lens. Get light into this lens and it will pay for itself with far less shots with just a little more forethought and effort. To get larger bokeh balls, get closer to the subject and experiment with the background separation distance to get the right size. This is one lens I would enjoy practicing and honing my skills. Cheers!!!

Great review Marc! Not sure this lens was intended for low light use. Nevertheless I picked one up & it has become one of my favorite lens! For those interested try getting a used copy. I don’t think it’s worth the full price. Enjoyed your bslanced review!

There is much more separation between your subject and the background with the STF lens. The 85mm is way busier.

Sony should revise this lens with an Electro-Chromatic Apodization Filter which can be turned on or off, letting you choose between full transmission or STF modes. They should also make it an F2 which is the traditional 100mm prime aperture (like the Zeiss 100/2 Planar T* of yore).

A 50mm f1.4 STF T2.8 would be amazing. 8:33 to me the 100mm looks much more natural, I personally like that look better.

Well in that money I would love to get 85mm f1.4 which will be much more flexible to use. And 70-200 is also required to cover the focal lengths. So any of those would work really fine. And I really loved the Bokeh rendering of 70-200 at f2.8 It somewhat makes you feel like that bokeh is coming out of Classic lens. Although I ised it for 40-50 shots only, but I liked it. (Never had hands on any sony 85)

The slo mo focus test is odd. There’s no fave or eye detection, pretty much area down the middle so that’s why your bud’s fave wasn’t reacquiring focus quickly when he’s on the sides.

This lens is excellent for a portrait photographer who uses strobe off camera flash like myself. If you depend on natural light, this is not the lens for you. It’s not a lowlight lens.

I have this lens, I love this lens. The rendering is beautiful, not the sharpest compared to "today's lens" BUT the bokeh is just so perfect though. Literally seems like you just merely photoshop a person onto a blurred background LOLLLLL
