I had the 35mm f1.8 for a couple of months but felt the images were not 'punchy' enough. I sold that and bought the F1.4 GM and was immediately blown away by the IQ and creamy bokeh. Overall i think the F1.8 is pretty good for the price but the GM is in another league of its own.

Hi Pav, I always enjoy your videos! I own this 35 f1.8 lens and enjoy it but I am wondering if i would see a noticeable "real world" bump in photo quality if I 'upgraded' to a (used-, so slightly cheaper than full price) 35f1.4GM. Would it be worth the upgrade, in your opinion? From my research a lot photographers are a bit 'on the fence' between these two Sonys , the 351.8 and the 35GM. Thank you, Pav.
@PavSZ
Жыл бұрын
I think GM lens will always be better overall but you are right the differences will be very small. Possibly faster AF, if you are shooting fast moving objects and maybe less chromatic aberration. You also get a bigger and heavier lens with manual aperture control. This is a solid alternative. I personally do not use 35mm enough to justify GM lens. I also like shooting with 35mm from a gimbal, this one ticks all the boxes for me
@chryseass.5143

@@PavSZ Thanks so much for your reply Pav and for talking me out of my G.A.S. moment, ha,ha. You have confirmed my inner thoughts that I would be buying a new lens just to have that GM label but not really gaining much more except lens weight in my camera bag and bit more bokeh over my 35 f1.8. I do appreciate your objectivity.

Pav, in the past couple of days, I've watching your reviews back and forth, bcoz I have a purchasing decision to make. I'm a Canon FF DSLR shooter and now want to upgrade to mirrorless for the purpose wedding and travel videography+photography, Primarily I need a camera and a 35mm lens, but I have plans to buy a 85mm and a 20/24mm. I'm undecided between 2 choices... the Sony a7iv and the lumix S5iix with their respective 35mm 1.8 lenses. Like you, I've only heard good things about Sony 35 1.8 from everyone. You've handled both and I've just came across your review of Lumix s 35 1.8. If I have to make the decision of choosing one system over another solely on the performance of the 35mm 1.8, which one should I buy? I'm aware of the prices, strength and weaknesses of both a7iv and s5iix. Thank you for reading this long comment. Looking forward to your opinion.
@PavSZ
Жыл бұрын
thank you for watching my videos. You summarised your question well at the end. A7IV and s5IIx have different traits and qualities. You can't just judge the whole system by one lens. I think both of these lenses are very similar optically with Lumix being a touch sharper overall, but that would only be visible if you compared images taken with both side by side. You get also more from Lumix camera when it comes to video.

Did you find the contrast a bit low between f1.8 and f2.5 on this lens? That's the biggest weakness on this lens. I have the Sony G 40mm f2.5, which is sharp and contrasty from wide open. It offers a punch that this 35 mm lacks. I have decided to keep the 40 instead of this 35.

Considering this lens for webcam use in an aps-c camera (zv-e10). I usually shoot with a Pentax K3 (also aps-c) and I consider the 35mm LTD as my "normal" lens - the equivalent of a 50mm on a FF camera so a 35mm is always my first recommendation for a first prime - and once you go primes then your world suddenly opens up, as does your wallet! 😢

Samyang is a cine lens. It does decent photos, it has got tally lamp and electronic front element accessory connection. However it suffers from focus breathing. This is a primary photo lens, small, simple and it has got zero focus breathing. Only you can decide which one is right for you.
