One of my favorite lenses too for the A6000 series. Can't beat the size of it and the OSS. Image quality is great too. I'd take this over the Sigma 30mm any day.

This is being put a little late. Have a6000 and planning to migrate to a64000- solely due to focus tracking ability,- have children and grandchildren who will not remain still, makes it very hard to nail eyes! Given the lack of decent native glass when got a6000,, purchased Sigma 16 1.4 (what a lens, check out Technology Mafia and other stellar reviews of this lens), the expensive but excellent, Sony Zeiss 35 2.8 ., fast enough. Will buy semi-legendary Sony Zeiss 55 1.8, ok expensive, but just read the review of DXOMA - one of the best lenses it has tested.

Hi, I’ve been watching your videos for a bit, trying to make the jump on buying the a6000. This would be my first detachable lens camera. I have been a Nikon point and shoot forever p530 Nikon. Question, I have no clue on manual shooting. Please tell me if the a6000 is good auto modes while I’m learning. Also I’m nervous about the menu settings I hear it’s complicated. I was going to buy the d3500 Nikon dslr because of my knowledge of Nikon, but I love the compact size of a6000. Thanks for the help
@kyletaggart
5 жыл бұрын
I think any menu system is kinda complicated at first. I think a small hurdle is it's not touch screen, so going through the menu is less accessible than touching a screen. The canon M50 has that going for it. As for auto modes, it has multiple, but I'd suggest working with "A" aperture priority mode. ISO will be auto, shutter speed will be auto, and you just control the depth of field, which is also how much light the lens lets in. I use that mode a majority of the time, and actually a lot of more serious photographers as well. The small size of the a6000, Canon M50, and others really gets you out taking MORE photos. I think that's the beauty of these cameras. 👍

I have this lens by November 2018, and yes I really love this lens on my a6000. In fact, this lens makes me want to shoot more because after 8-9 months shooting just with the kit lens isn't really satisfied me in visual aspect. And this lens is really helps my problem. By my experience, the Sony FE 35mm 2.8 Zeiss lens is unbelievably sharper lens. But it has 2x price, and don't have OSS which is somewhat helpful for video. So, the Sony E 35mm 1.8 OSS is really high recommended lens for anyone who look for native Sony prime APS-C lens. It's sharp enough, it's versatile, it has fast AF, good in low-light situation, and good for video.

Do you ever record these videos with the 35mm or would that just be too close for where you're sitting? I'm trying to determine whether the 16mm or the 35mm will be better for me. I've been strongly considering buying the 18-105 first, which will let me explore many different ranges. BTW, correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like you're sitting about 2' away from your lens. I expected to see distortion at that range. Are you correcting for distortion when editing your videos?
@kyletaggart

I don’t use the 35mm for videos, I only ever use the sigma 16mm. And yeah I’m about 2-4 feet. Video is shot at 16:9 so it probably takes away the barrel distortion slightly. If I put my hands towards the lenses you’ll see distortion. The 18-105 is a fantastic lens.

I chose the Sigma 30 1.4 instead, it was cheaper, had better contrast, was f1.4 and I had bought the 16 already, so decided to remain within Sigma. Now that the 56 is available and apparently is as good in quality as the 16 and 30, I am trying to find an excuse to buy it and have the 3 lenses. Also Sony users seem obsessed with inbuilt OSS/ISS etc, this is a little curious as at the outset of the a6000 and siblings releases Sony had an almost bare cupboard of native lens and relied on those bodies that had this ( overrated feature - in my opinion at least?) to make up for the shortcomings os their lens. Also, when Sigma came out with arguably the best lens, both at the time and now, for the a6000 et al series, it gave fast 1.4 lens apertures. In the now distant past, most photographers looked for fast glass - still do- for obviouss reasons and used with higher ISO speeds can give several stops of de facto OSS.

I have a review on the Tamron 18-300mm lens that’s a great all around lens. Can get wide but you can also do everything in between as well, downside it’s a little large. As for Sony, there is the 18-135mm - lighter, but not the same big wide range. There’s also the Sony 18-105 f4 G OSS, lens tube doesn’t expand, which is nice. F4 is nice. I know Sony has came out with 3 faster aperture lenses this past year, but I haven’t gotten my hands on em! If you want smaller size and lighter, the 10-20mm f4 would be good. If you want more range, and don’t mind size, I’d check out the Tamron and Sony’s.

Hi Kyle, I’ve read a comment on the interwebs somewhere that 35mm (full frame) is great for over-the-dinner-table photography. Could you do a video on that please? I can’t find anything on that topic. Do i go 24mm on my kit lens? Do i set the picture setting to “Incandescent”? I find that with the prevalence of flourescent lighting everywhere (they’re actually better for your eyes than LED), I need to go to “Neutral” lighting mode to cancel out the yellowish tinge.
@kyletaggart
5 жыл бұрын
Hey Kevin! Are you referring to overhead photography? (Like top down view?) I mean 24mm is the focal length equivalent for 35mm on full frame. Go with what you think looks best! Also if you’re shooting RAW and will edit your photos you can adjust the EB after the fact. The incandescent WB does help with indoor lighting.

I would simply add that there is an obsession with IBIS ( and other names) being featured in both lens and camera bodies Many survived for decades without these aids, and given the ISOs, you can push these cameras to, just dial in the fastest apertures and I doubt that camera shake will really be a problem. Note, that I do not use any of my still cameras for video. If want to do video, simply use an excellent Panasonic I purchased yeara ago for just this.

Hey Kyle, loved the video new to photography and was looking at getting either a refurbished a6000 or a Canon Rebel t6 which do you recommend? And also what lens would you recommend for traveling?
@kyletaggart
5 жыл бұрын
100% the a6000. DSLR bodies (the T6) are much larger (fatter) and in my opinion, the a6000 will just get you out shooting more than carrying around a T6. (my work uses that exact camera). As for lens for travel, the kit lens is great, I always recommend ppl to get it with the camera. It's cheaper to get the kit lens with it then to wait and buy it later. Also the 50mm f1.8 is a great starter, it's half the price of the 35mm f1.8, and you can probably find that one used for $200 or less. :)

@kyletaggart
5 жыл бұрын
F1.8 will help in low light situations. If you have the kit lens keep in mind that zooms in to 50mm. So with the 35mm you lose a little bit of reach, but gain a lot better low light performance. 👍🏻

@@kyletaggart I do have the kit lens. Trying to figure out if 35mm or 50mm prime lens would be better for indoor volleyball but I'm new at this and wasnt sure if there were limitations to these lenses that would make them not ideal for action shots. Everything I read talked about how good these lenses are for portraits but no mention of action shots
@kyletaggart
5 жыл бұрын
@@PREMIERJEWELRYDEBRA it would do just fine with action. It's all about shutter speed when it comes to action shots. Prime's introduce a little toughness when using it for sports, as sometimes you want to zoom in and out. However prime's typically offer better low light ability. I'd suggest the 18-105 G lens but that is at f4. Better than the kit at 50mm, but not the best for low light.

@kyletaggart
Жыл бұрын
The kit lens is 16-50mm and this one is 35mm. You are correct it can’t zoom in or out, but almost always, prime lenses (meaning a fixed focal length, in this case 35mm) are sharper, and typically have a better maxim aperture - so for 35mm it’s a f1.8 vs the kit lens is at best f3.5 at 16mm. If you shoot jpg, you can setup “clear image zoom” which is a way to “zoom” with a prime lens. The camera does it’s best to not lose quality while essentially zooming in on the frame. Prime lenses make you use your feet to “zoom” in essentially. The 35mm can produce a much better quality image than the 16-50. But, for some people a zoom is more important - utility / plus just your use case of what you shoot - might require a zoom over a prime.

Good vid and pics. I have the lens and like it very much. Focus by wire/lack of barrel markings limit full benefits for street photographers who prefer zone focusing method. Aside from price, you didn’t mention other “cons”. Kissing lenses is not recommended, guy 😃. How about taking lens review up a notch and showing sharpness images at different apertures, and edge to edge sharpness? Suggest a technical demo of lens stabilization (e.g., photos of grid, handheld, at different shutter speeds noting when blur begins to set in with IS on and off). Stabilization will differ from person to person, but a demo test might be very instructive. BTW, was that your Pentax K1000? Good intro for k-mount adapted lenses, unless I missed prior posts you did on this subject.

Get a Pentax K to Sony E mount adapter (under $20) and try the Pentax lens(es) on the Sony - terrific image quality w/light wt compact design - manual focus and exposure, but amazing color rendition and added reach because the Pentax is a full frame lens.
