I would have had to buy a wider lens like the 16-35 to compensate for the crop, which averages out with the cost of that camera and the lenses i already own. But I plan on getting an a7iv in the future to compliment my 24p setup. Still love my a7III great B cam, shoots gorgeous 4k 24p with the right lenses, even if it is only 4:2:0.

If you wonder why A7 IV has crop on 4k 60p, it's due to sensor read out speed, which is more then 16,6ms for full sensor needed for 60fps (actualy it's over 26ms). That's why you observe the rolling shutter issue in 4k super35 on A7 IV. To achive 60 fps less lines are being read every frame, so you've got faster read out speed, but also a crop factor. Simultanously horizontal resolution is too low to perform line skiping or line binding, which I beleve A1 doeas with it's 50Mpix sensor. In other words it's not a software limitation, but hardware limitation of the sensor itself.

Where a7siii thrives most is durability and consistency. No overheating for filming hours continuesly. No rolling shutter Also it is obviously that a7iv processor can't keep up with 4k (from 7k) resolution in 60 thus that is why it has crop? You may ask why I impy that - because a7iv has rolling shutter and that is usually a clue that processor is not enough to handle that

I'm a wedding videographer, and I have had a negative experience with the A74 overheating whilst shooting a 4K wedding ceremony. It was admittedly a very hot day here in Australia, but it shut down 3 times during a 1/2hr ceremony and was also giving over heating warnings earlier in the day during the bride prep. One of my other shooters experience this as well whilst shooting in 1080p. - It was only my b-roll cam, as I was also running 2 x A7siii's at the same time so it was not the end of the world. - but after this experience I couldn't trust the camera and I sold it strait away and replaced it with another A7siii. - I should add that I have had plenty of experience with the A73 and that never overheated (the A73 doesn't run at the same high bit rate of course).

a7iii does overheat for me as well when it comes to documentary recording. I start to see the overheating warning after the 20 minute mark recording in 4K, XAVC S, 30fps and 8-bit. A7IV does the same for me and im lucky that some of the events I went to, they have ice that i can grab a piece of ice and help cool off the a7iv while letting it rest for 5 minutes. My FX3 have had the overheating symbol shown up at the 30 minute mark but it has never shut down on me which is great! I think people shouldn't use their a7iv as the primary camera unless they give it a good 5 minute break between long recordings

Since turning it off I don't have any issues running/recording. I actually have recorded for several hours with the a7IV many times with no issues. The A7SIII had overheating issues identical to the A7IV in its first year. Over time, and with firmware updates, it has become better. You still won’t get even an hour out of the SIII at 4k60. Even less in 90°. 60p is meant to be a slow motion frame rate. I recently shot a festival with my A7IV and the outside temp was 88°. I shot in both 4k24 and 4k60 with the temperature setting set to high and I had no overheating. I switched from 4k24 to 4k60 and recorded 30-40 minutes before switching back and continuing on 4k24. No overheating. That’s with the latest firmware. So I don’t know honestly. I’ve seen mixed reports on the issue so maybe I just got lucky and got a unit that doesn’t suffer from the problem. Who knows. I love the 7IV though.

@@thisiserich I have documented on video my test of the A7iv overheating. Perhaps you did get lucky, but I bought 2 of them, tested both of them and got the same results on both copies. So your experience is a mystery to me. I’m genuinely puzzled by your results. I also documented my test of the A7Siii. 4k60/10bit/4:2:2 200mbs did not overheat in 98 degrees Fahrenheit, direct sunlight. The battery ran out while testing. Filled up a 256GB card, no overheating, not even a warning. That’s over 2 hours of continuous recording at 4k60 on my A7Siii, not a hint of overheating. Here again, your comment regarding the A7Siii overheating in less than an hour has not been my experience. My experience with the A7Siii also seems to be consistent with some of the tests performed by guys on KZitem, including Matt Johnson’s test. Who knows, perhaps it’s Sony building it into the firmware so we will buy the more expensive gear. Because that’s what I did. I returned the A7iv and bought the A7Siii.

Great vid! I wish people (not you Matt) would stop referring to sharper image quality as "better" image quality. Sharper does not mean better. There are film directors that intentionally customize their extremely expensive cinema lenses so that they become LESS sharp. Its all depending on the look/style you're going for. The A7siii has probably the fastest sensor readout speed, which is below 10ms and is very close to the Alexa. It seems Sony managed to solve the Rolling Shutter issue with this camera. This is possible because of that low megapixel count and I do not think Sony was trying to add a cripple handle when it came to A7siv. With those many megapixels, the higher readout is just not possible. Even Panasonic's Netflix approved camera the S1H, suffers from Rolling Shutter when using the full sensor. The rolling shutter is much better when using the S35 mode on S1H.

I used to recommend the a7siii for video but not anymore once the FX3 came out. In every way, I prefer the FX3 over the a7siii due to so many features it has that allows me greater control of the scenes. I truly think the a7Siii will be the last model to be released as sonly will likely abandon the a7S series since there is no more point for it now. The a7iv is a great video camera as well granted you don't use 120fps at all. But for documentary recording, I definitely wouldn't recommend the a7iv due to that overheating issues. The a7iv does overheat once you pass the 25 minute mark in 4K, 10-bit and XAVC-S setting. A7iv is a great B-cam to the FX3 and a7Siii. My advice, if you plan to get an a7Siii, just spend the extra $500 dollars and get an FX3. All great cameras and you can't go wrong with either one depending on your workflow.

@@coreyedward8335 Internally the same yes. The main difference is whether you want a viewfinder or an audio handle. The A7S3 actually ends up being more expensive with the K3M audio module vs the FX3 which is why so many people choose it over the A7S3. But the A7S3 has one of the best viewfinders which I use all the time whereas the FX3 only has the LCD. So for my needs, the A7S3 is the clear winner. I've used both extensively and they're both great cameras but the only extra features the FX3 has are a fan, tally lamps and mounting points and now the new cine EI menu. It's still missing more important things like waveforms, true 24p, 4k DCI, shutter degree and variable ND's for it to be considered an actual cinema cam. So I get why people love it but at the same time, I really feel it fell short with the omission of so many important features. It's an A7S3 with tally lamps ;) Seriously, though, both cameras are mirrorless video kings.

@@coreyedward8335 Yes, internally they are both the same camera. But physically, they are too far apart from one another. The red lights, cine buttons, audio handle and especially the fan is what sold me over to the FX3. We can built a similar setup with the a7S3 and the K3M audio but then it would cost just as much as an FX3 already. With my run-n-gun recording at wedding events, i need to use both the shotgun mic and the rode wireless go 2 mics. I need to operate all 4 audio channels at the same time to get the best audio from both the bride, the groom and everything around them. Then my recordings last longer than 20 minutes so I need that fan to keep the camera cool. Now with the latest firmware update, FX3 feels and operates like a true cine camera. @@whoismatt my greens! It could potentially be that one cam is running a Sony 70-200 and the other is running a Rokinon 135? but my greens are way off. My a7siii is pulling more blue and my a7iv pulls more neon.

great video as always Matt - my a7sIII got stolen and I purchased the a7IV and I really miss the 4k 120, my question is, can you tell the difference between 4k 120 and HD 120? I still don't know the answer, even though I have had both cameras, because isn't the a7IV downsampled to 1080 from a larger sensor? Curious to know what you think

Hello, I had a Sony A7II and connected a dummy battery to a NP-F990 for video recording. My question is: for Sony A7C and Sony A7IV can I only operate the camera with USB type C without a dummy battery? If feasible please provide link to product. I tried it but it doesn't work, the settings on the camera are also set to USB-ON. Thanks so much

Another nice comparison Matt..but in the future..Sony should just discontinue with the S Line..they basically killed it already in the sense of the FX3 released a few months later after the S3..released..that alone people were kinda upset with that lol ..it felt like Sony was sitting on it knowing they have the FX3 ready and yet..they still released the S3..just to release it I feel because people were "waiting on it for so long"..lol Yes the price point is the only thing going for the S3..because the FX3 is higher..even the body and how its setup..who needs the viewfinder in the S3 when shooting video?..hence the FX3 body without the viewfinder..seems like the FX3 everything about makes more sense going forward..even the upcoming APSC body of the new FX30 seems like a good replacement of the S Line going forward even with the "crop"...so Sony should just end the S Line..

I think Sony was already in the development phase with the a7Siii and the FX3 idea likely popped up when the a7Siii was almost done. It's the same deal with Canon's 1DX Mark 3, the hybrid Mirrorless/DSLR flagship camera. Canon already completed and didn't want waste anymore resources so they decided to release it anyways. Then 2 years later, Canon R3 comes out and destroys it already. Canon almost wanted to start development on the 5D mark V until Sony's mirrorless camera took their fans away which they knew they had to switch gears and go the mirrorless route. I too think the a7Siii will likely be the last in the a7S series. No point for it anymore.

@@ldmndz4652 you're welcome! Back in 2017, Canon and Nikon were not really interested in mirrorless camera until Sony's A9 and a7Riii blew it out of the water leaving everlasting impressions. History is still unfolding so just follow the news and you will be up to date on the moves these companies makes.

still doing research...I want to upgrade from my a6400 to something new...! I know most Sony cameras look good in 4k but what about 1080p? my a6400 has "bad" 1080p (not very detailed and I don't mean I need artificially sharpened footage) -sometimes I need to give raw footage on HD to clients. I was looking at the FX30 and in a comparison video for 1080p I saw that the a7iv and a7Siii (FX 3 also?) had better 1080p than the FX30...the 7IV has more detailed 1080p but only if used in APSC-something to do with the way the a7IV handles video-"7k is binned to 1080 in full frame. Where apsc it's 5k down sampled to 1080. Down sampling is better than binning"...just wondering if you had tried 1080p at all..I shoot 4k when I know I will edit the footage myself...But I also want good 1080p! my Canon C100 mk2 has really good 1080p but no 4k...argh..does the FX30 have good 1080p in your experience? Thanks
