The GoPro Hero8 Black with GoProLabs firmware also records the gyro data in the clips. The software program ReelSteady then uses the gyro data to stabilize in post. It also crops, because it is the same technique. The GoPro of course has a very wide-angle lens and shoots at high shutter speeds so the resulting stabilized videos look very good and stable as any gimbal video.

Excellent review, this could be the perfect feature for still shooters, especially news/documentary photographers who need a K.I.S.S. workflow. 1. Most do not have the luxury of time to set-up the camera for movies, notably adding an ND filter for a 180 degree shutter. 2. With a proper 180 degree shutter angle, the individual frames will often be blurred by default/design, this negates pulling a *sharp* 4K frame grab for stills usage. 3. For stills, we shoot for a sharper image that movie makers, this gyro data kinda straddles both genres, I've no doubt that future versions of Catalyst style software will offer post frame blurring option too. This is could become a perfect solution for us hybrid still shooters, no funkiness in the frame corners, the visual aesthetics looked great too, no complaints to my eye!

Gordon, you've already pointed this out, but I think it bears repeating for those fawning over the beautiful results in the beginning of the video: The results seen in Gordon's video is much more a reflection of his skill and understanding of the mechanics of digital stabilization, and less a reflection of the capabilities of Sony's gyro stabilization technology in post. The 1/1000 shutter speed and wide focal length are the secret to the beautiful results Gordon gets from the post-stabilization here. The fast shutter speed prevents blurring artifacts, and the wide focal length allow for generous crop - not to mention that wide focal lengths are inherently less prone to jarring artifacts from being handheld.* Plus, of course, he's shooting in locations that have linear objects fairly close to the subject on either side, giving the shot a lovely feel of depth and visual interest. Eliminate one, both, or all of these elements and the result will be less than spectacular - as shown in the other footage Gordon runs through Sony's post correction. Personally, I'll stick with IBIS as my #1, followed by lens stabilization to assist, and a gimbal mounted to a Steadicam vest if I need to back IS and IBIS with absolute stabilization (e.g., for tracking shots out the tailgate of a vehicle). These are much more reliable fallbacks where you don't have to guess "how bad" the footage will look like after the shoot in the dailies. *Try an older telephoto photo lens without optical stabilization on a modern body - on a tripod - and attempt to get a smooth shot. You might even get jumpy footage simply from the lens shifting on the lens mount when you touch the focus (or zoom) ring.

I bet this technique would pair well with the Laowa 9mm f/5.6. It's almost too wide for many things, and there's some significant vignetting that can't be easily corrected in video, but if you crop in ~30% you'd still get a 12mm with better corner brightness. Would be nice to see Nikon recording gyro data in the future.

So I've used several different camera systems over the years that employ IBIS of some sort (Sony, Olympus, now Fuji), and this result is really astounding. I get that the stabilize-in-post method has its own caveats and workflow considerations, but the end product really speaks for itself. Color me impressed - which is notable since Sony's IBIS/stabilization results have generally been my least favorite in the past.

When i came across the word "gyro" in the name, I immediately thought that there would be some sort of gyroscopic stabilisation applied to the camera itself. Obviously it is 100% digital stabilisation that simply uses a physical gyro for reference data. You did a great job explaining all that. My takeaway is that this is really a "poor man's" image stabilisation because you are either going to use a really high shutter speed (which is not often an arsthetic that is desired) with attending ISO noise, or you are going to get pulsing motion blur and gello-effect cmos artifacting. This video really helped clear that up. Thankyou. It helps one decide whether an external gimbal is really worth the effort. I think it's better to build using a gumball into your workflow - just get used to it and make it muscle memory. Better than the digital choppy nonsense IMO. No wonder sony doesn't really bring a lot of attention to it.

I have been shooting most of my videos on a GoPro lately and love this style of stabilisation. If done right it looks pretty good, I was really impressed with the shots at the beginning! The rest later on, well, not so much, but it also seemed like you stress tested it rather than going for realistic scenarios. I almost expected Godzilla to be attacking Brighton in the next scene 😂 It would be great to see what happens if you add some motion blur in post on those 1/1000 shots. Of course it all becomes pretty processing heavy in post, but frankly I’d prefer that to carrying a gimbal!

Great review as always, Gordon! For example I've not heard about this 'gyro stabilization' recorded data in any other review, and most other reviewers just seemed to rush A7C reviews and dump on the camera. But I like the form factor a lot since the NEX days and only the lack of Sony's new menu system is stopping me from buying this camera. Hopefully they can add their new menu through firmware update so that I can buy this camera, otherwise I'm waiting for A7C mark II.
@CC-gt3ro
3 жыл бұрын
I bought a7c and like you i thought touch menu would be good but now i think i don’t need it. And there is many custom settings available. Fn shortcuts, custom buttons for photos and video separately, 3 global settings selector and even your own custom menu. And you have touch focus and tracking. But active stabilization is the feature missing. Ibis is good for photo and static videos, but not for dynamic walking videos in difficult chaotic ground. Catalyst with gyro can stabilize but not perfectly in chaotic ground, in normal controlled ground it works. When i do video at home and walk catalyst stabilize very well (especially at 1/100 but even at 1/50 ir is acceptable). Outside you need higher shutter speed like the guy on video (the guy use 1/1000). I need to make more test outside. For the menu, they won’t upgrade the firmware, the screen has not the capabilities to handle touch menu, and the operation system is not design for. You will have to wait the new mark ii and the bionz xr processor, but the body is small and they need to add active cooling, which is not easy. My opinion is there won’t be a7cii before few years until technology improve to reduce the processor heat generation. The a7siii has active cooling in the body but it is bigger. An engineer from sony confirmed what i say. The internals on a7siii are completely new from ground up. It cannot fit in a7c.

Gordon does the frame rate matter because the gyro data is recorded for each frame? Ie so more frames equals not only more gyro data but crucially more data points to ‘plot’ (& therefore correct) the actual movement of the camera (the software has to ‘guess’ less what the movement of the camera was between each data point, ie frame). nobody mentioned that a7c had the same gyro stab as the a7s3 (not a fan of wonky IBIS)! this + tracking af + flippy screen + unlim record times makes it a great value for videographers even tho it's still 8bit. in fact, with hlg3 + rec709 on the a73, I find the IQ/DR to be more than adequate for web delivery. so yeah, this will make for a nice upgrade for my aging a6000 with the a7s3 on rentals :)

Hello, Thank you for the great review! I have a bit unrelated but related question about A7C. I'm finding the color values and black noise level drastically changes after I stabilize the footage in the Catylist Browse. Is this normal? Every color file is exported the same but it's really noticeable. I just wanted to check if you have noticed that also before I call in for Sony support. Thank you! :)
@cameralabs

Hmm, that is odd, what colour profile / picture mode did you use when filming? Mine were all standard.
@CKramburglar

So seems like the ideal is to shoot 1080 (to avoid rolling shutter) and high shutter speeds (to avoid motion blur). Neither should be dealbreakers for amateur work, which is who the a7c targets. Could make it an ideal youtube camera for many. Grab the a7c, stick the Tamron 17-28 on it and you're off to the races. Just stick to daylight for handheld and bring a travel tripod if it gets dark

Very interesting and useful video. Thank you! One thing I'm still a little confused about, though. If I want to get the best stabilization result, I should film with IBIS OFF and use catalyst in post? Is that correct? Do you have any examples of what happens if you try to use Catalyst on footage that was stabilized in camera? Thanks!
@cameralabs
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you understand it correctly! If you use lens / body IS and then try and stabilise it AGAIN in Catalyst, it generally over-compensates and ruins it the other way. That's the gamble though - trusting catalyst enough that you're willing to disable lens / body IS - plus running the risk of greater motion blur and rolling shutter too.

What almost no one knows: You can also use the Movie Add-on App for the ImagingEdge App on iPad and iPhone instead of Mac or PC to use the gyro stabilization.

Excellent info. And unbelievably, no other reviewer I've seen of the @7C even mentions it, as you say, an unknown to most. I do wildlife (birds mostly) with @6400 & FE200600G, and very few vids, since usually at 600mm, and hand held. So results are a bit shaky, at best, no matter what I'm leaning on ... LOL Thoughts of upgrading to FF, simply for better ISO / handling noise reduction in stills. Have waited for couple reasons, price, and EVF center position on FFs which I don't care for, since I use EVF exclusively. @7C, price, half or more of other FFs & side EVF alone is a winner for me, as a simple hobbyist. Gyro data stabilize a major plus. THANKS. Think I'll wait for the @7Cii .... LOL as they always release in 6 months or so, or price drop if impatient, as many reviewer's complaint is the price, and Sony usually listens pretty good to their customer base.

Ah damn, so here is the dilemma. Go with the Panasonic G85/G9 (if you want that juicy 10 bit 4K 60 lol), get incredible stabilization straight-out of the camera. But have the 2x crop that makes your 12mm f1.4 go to 24 f2.8. or go with the A7c, with that Earthquake IBIS, have to use the software and get cropped down anyways. LOL.

Hahaa, your reviews are the best Gordon, unbiased and factual, and with your usual charm and wit! This, though, is interesting. The big breakthrough will be when the crop can be engineered out. I think this is very possible and, for sure, Sony will be working tooth and nail on this, hence the lack of publicity. We'll see, but phone s/ware is probably a big development platform for this... Great video.

I can think of a few reasons off the top of my head: you'll want to control the amount that you're applying after the fact. You really won't know beforehand how much to apply (because of the crop) and doing it in camera would make your camera unusable while it was processing your footage. Really, I'm not sure why you'd want this level of digital stabilization applied in camera at all; it's so much better to do it as needed after the fact IMO.

It’s always seemed strange how a cheap phone can do this gyro data stabilisation and it not be offered in-camera. Like, yes you can have your nice 4K standard mode, but it’s not some unwashed sullied thing to offer a crop-inducing stabiliser, where the viewfinder starts cropped anyway. Is something like this not whats present in the A7S III’s active stabilisation mode, or is that IBIS only? Sony bring strong crop-based EIS really... it’s 2020. If the sensor has enough real-estate, why not do it. You’d only struggle on APSC crop on a 12mp sensor, right?

A7iii uses “...stabilization unit and gyro sensors and algorithms...” for the 5 axis sensor stabilization. It would be interesting if its just a matter of firmware update to add that gyro data to the file or its a new standalone gyro unit just for this purpose

The problem is that now, the background is very stable, but your face is not, it's moving up and down. It seems like the normal IBIS would be the best balanced results maybe. Still, in some cases where you really need very stable footage, when running for example, this could be VERY useful.

Interesting review Gordon. I am not a fan of this stabilization. Looks like go pro stabilization where you are bouncing around in the frame but the background is stable. Kind of makes you dizzy watching it. When you were standing still it looks great. I would rather have effective in camera stabilization, even if it means a little shake. I think a little shake looks much more natural than this. I still think if you need perfect stabilization a gimbal looks best. Thanks for sharing the video.

You need a shutter speed fast enough to eliminate motion blur, so it depends on the motion in question.

Lets hope Sony continues with this. This is the missing feature on DSLR cameras, great for stabilization when you have no other options. Similar to how GoPro works. This reminds me of the now old steadXP system, would be great if that was implemented on most cameras in the future.
