Hey Philip, honest question. I felt as though every review talked extensively about the ISO and Focus (which I admittingly also talked about, because how could you not), but didn't talk at all about design, or about the things that still weren't great. Yes, the design is identical to that of the A7R3, but if that camera didn't interest the viewer, then this would be their first experience with the re-design. So, my pitch was "at this price point" here are the things that matter most to me - and that most people seem to be glossing over or not addressing at all. - D

The 30 minute record thing is to do with a rule in the EU (and possibly) other countries where going over that would class it as a camcorder. That would add, as you rightly point out, taxes etc on the camera. The EU rule I believe expires next year and may not be renewed so potentially the 30 minute thing might come to and end soon. I really hope so.

Pretty sure that is also a rule in the US, and I don't know how much the tax is, but I'm not sure if I would want to pay significantly more for this camera so that it could record more than 30 minutes of video if I meant to use it for, you know, taking pictures, which used to be the primary purpose of all cameras but these days who knows.

High ISO differences between FF bodies is a meme at this point. There's less than 1 stop of difference, for stills and in RAW, between any of the currently shipping FF bodies when viewed at the same print size. You can verify this using comparison tools like the studio scene tool at DP Review. People make the mistake of pixel peeping cameras with different resolutions and coming to conclusions based on different magnifications. Scale a high ISO A7r II/III, D800/810/850, or 5Dsr image down to 12mp and it will look better than an A7s I/II image. (Similar noise, better sharpness/detail.) And they will look as good as the latest A7 III RAWs. Lots of other real differences to consider between all the cameras. But high ISO is a wash right now. The big difference in high ISO is jumping from crop to any FF. As good as crop has become at high ISO, it still can't touch FF.

The 29:59 Limit is not because they want to sell their video cameras. Its because a video camera in Europe costs import tax and a photo camera doesn't. The spec they decide if it is a video camera or not is if it can record 30 min of video in one.
@Tempest261

Doesn't Canon just close the file and automatically open a new one (without dropping a frame)? That's my understanding at least. Seems like a viable workaround- why can't Sony do the same thing?
@mattdebyl8806
6 жыл бұрын
Canon do that for spanning files exceeding 4GB, not for exceeding 30mins. One is a limit on file sizes using FAT32, the other has to do with EU import tariffs. PS Sony do spanning files, but for anything using XAVC-S they insist on using ExFAT cards which don't have a 4GB file limit (and therefore don't have to span).

Stellar camera. I upgraded from an a7R to the a7iii and im really pleased. Adapting canon glass with my metabonez mk4 t is a dream (i hear its even better with the sigma mc-11). Focus is now so much more intelligent. One thing I wish I could do is set mode / settings defaults for video and photo separately (Picture Profile settings and focus mode in particular). I shoot both photos and video from photo mode, and have issues with the focus mode from time to time. Iʻd also like it if pressing the record button could pop a picture profile on just for the shooting of that clip, and return to default for taking photos.

What also nobody tells you: a7iii and even a9 only has 8bit video instead of 10bit on the GH5 and on the a9 no flat video profile. How should anyone color grade 8bit in 2018? Also, the video specs are not a single bit better than the 4 year old samsung nx1: 8bit video, 120fps @1080p, 30fps @4K. For a camera body 1.5x more expensive than a 4 years old NX1 I want at least double the frame rates... And come on, the UHD is cropped. The NX1 does downsampling from an uncropped 4K DCI readout. Plus stacked BSI sensor? So disappointing that there's no worth upgrade for a 4 years old Samsung NX1 for hybrid consumers. A NX1 body costed (retail) 500$ in 2016: BSI APS-C 4K DCI with full sensor readout and downsampling from 6k to 4k(uncropped), h265, 8bit, 15fps raw burst, 4K.DCI@30fps, FHD@120fps. I thought the a7iii or a9 would be a good successor. I almost bought it until I found out how shitty it compares to my NX1. I love Sony and I hope they fix the flaws.

From my understanding Sony didn't add a joystick bc other cameras had them, rather they added it bc their consumers wanted it. Sony is great at listening to their consumers and adjusting their products to meet their needs, which is another reason people are switching from canon and Nikon. Also the same consumers want dials and buttons to be able to adjust setting on the fly without having to look at the screen or go through menu option settings each time. Would setting adjustments via gestures have been a nice add-on? Meh maybe? But definitely not in replacement of physical dials. Car companies learned this lesson as consumers at first thought full touch screens were a cool idea bc they were the latest and greatest thing. However, in reality people hated having certain dials and buttons eliminated bc they could no longer reach, feel, and adjust, they had to look (take eyes of road), focus (on the screen not the road), and adjust. I personally like my high end camera to feel like a camera not a point and shoot. Opinions?

@Blockbuster2033

Sea Panther well, I kinda agree with everyone here. Personally I can live without a touchscreen, however the menu system is something that I can't imagine how it can be so hard to just reorganise. I'd even be fine with the old menu system that we had from the a7 and a6000 till the a7rii, if they'd just reorganised the functions and grouped for example focus setting together. The next big complaint I have is also the hdmi port, they should at least put a mini-hdmi port, instead of that micro-hdmi port, I've already killed about five or so hdmi cables on that stupid port. And then there are the buttons. I used a friend's canon 1dsiii a while back for an event shooting and after switching back to the a7 series those sony cameras felt like 20$ toys. The buttons are mushy, the dials don't really click. Now I wanted to get started on the video features, but then I realized, that there are cameras like the fs5 and fs7 :D. However, I think sony could blow all of their competition out of the universe, if they'd release the fs5 with a dci 4k full frame size bsi sensor and ibis and good autofocus (the one from the a7rii or so), even while keeping everything else the same (codec, body, etc.). And I'm fairly confident they could do it for less than 10k$, although they wouldn't, because pro-video-cam-market haha. Cheers

the limited record time is down to taxes, if it can record longer than 29.59 it has to be a video camera and will be a higher rate of tax, the gh5 is so expensive partly due to that. when the gh4 was around they had a normal gh4 and then released a gh4 r which could record for as long as you liked but it was £300-£400 more expensive

"It is just as good if not better at low light," (referring to a7sii vs. a7iii) as stated at 0:41 of the video. That's false information about iso low light capability of a7iii vs. a7sii. Check Max Yuryev's recent video on the comparison of Sony a7iii vs a7sii iso low light test: kzitem.info/news/bejne/mo9_s5-Am6qjeoo You will find that Sony a7iii is only good if you have good lighting, but when it is very low light scene (like filming horror short films), a7sii is still king of low light for video.
@vistek
6 жыл бұрын
Experiences may vary. I also said that the low light is remarkable, when you consider the price point, and the ISO level at which people may be comfortable using. I've used the A7Sii (and first gen) more than I care to - and not just for the web, but for broadcast. I shoot in both Slog3, Slog2, and in hypergammas. When I consider my personal experiences, and the level at which I'm comfortable boosting ISO - I feel honest in saying that I think the A7iii gives the A7Sii a run for its money. Especially when you consider its price. Whether one camera performs better in a controlled lab test is completely irrelevant to me.
@educatetube
6 жыл бұрын
I think when someone is using it for short films in low lit environment it is very important. For example, filming horror short films, a7sii is the ideal camera. The new a7iii and a7riii (which I owned and tested on) use a denoise internal software to hide it low noise capability; when you film in a really low light environment Sony a7sii beats a7iii and a7riii by far. You will see a waxy video images in a7iii after iso 6400. Under normal lighting most people won't know the difference but who buys these cameras? Most are aspiring filmmakers or photographers. They need information that will benefit them. I suggest perhaps you do an episode on shooting horror film with a7sii vs a7iii and perhaps a7siii if it becomes available. This would benefit all of us. Thanks.

Great video! I love the fact that you did address the build aspects. One of the things I discovered while going about and trying out some of the a7 series in store, was that the a7rii compared to the a7 has a better grip (a7iii has continued that too which is good). I still shoot on my a65 from 2012 and I love the solid grip that it provides, and it is not something I would want to sacrifice in upgrading to a mirrorless camera (for the price at least).

Now you where saying about the frame rate would I be better off using 60 or could I use 120 capturing the bride coming down the isle now I plan on being somewhat closeup just trying to keep her and at times her father in the frame, but of course wanting to slow it down for a better feel. So in your opinion 60 or could I shoot for 120? and is the auto focus as good as they say

Thanks for your comment RVP. Great question. No way I could answer that, except to say TEST TEST TEST. Before I go into any shoot, I take the camera and try to replicate any key shots to make sure the camera will do what I need it to do. Lighting, contrast, etc can all have a big impact on how well your AF works - so even certain tests may not completely replicate the environment you plan to be in. But it doesn't hurt to be as prepared as you can be. All the best! - D

Just wish Sony could figure out how to get the same depth of field as Fuji Does... And Fuji even is crop. Fuji is light years ahead when it comes physics.

The reason the camera can't do more than 30 min. of video is because it is marketed and imported as a still camera. There are legal reasons, not mechanical reasons, why they can't make it longer.

I have the a9 and to be honest I'm happy with the touch screen as is. On my product shooting camera it has full touch and I accidentally change camera setting all the time and it isn't awesome. Even when the camera is in my bag, if it gets bumped and wakes up then the bag starts changing the camera setting as I'm walking or running around. Know what I mean? So I'm totally cool with the lack of touch options on my s9

Great video and great (looking) camera! Too bad I'm a poor college student XD I'll just chill in the corner with my Canon EOS 800D... Also to comment on what you said about 30 minute recording limit. The exact limit is 29 minutes and 59 seconds because, according to what a Sony rep said in an interview with Max Yuryev (I believe it was that KZitemr who spoke to Sony about it), the European Union places a higher tax/tariff rate on video cameras than any other camera, and according to EU policy any camera that can record 30 minutes or longer straight, uncut is to be considered a video camera. That is why every camera manufacturer places a 29:59 recording limit on DSLRs and mirrorless systems. This law, however, expires this year! Of course they can easily renew it... Just thought I would clear that up for anyone who was interested!

The high ISO is awesome I compare this to my Canon 1Dx that is an amazing low light camera served me well during weddings and events. But this little "shit" of a camera beats the mighty beast HARD at high ISO and has more MPs. only downside ITS JUST TO DAMN SMALL!!!! :( I wear size 12 gloves (don't know the international standard is but for women its 8 and men 10 in Sweden) so you get I have big hands and without a grip this feels just to damn small. Only downside so far for me and well the lens prices and selection kinda sucks as well. Im not a huge fan of the pictures I got with the 24-70 GM or the 70-200mm GM lenses compared to my Canon equivalents. Whats your thoughts on that?

A9 20fps and the hogher megapixel count. Only reasons why a pro would want the a9 or r3 over the a7iii.

why on earth would sony adopt a full HDMI port? on a tiny mirrorless camera like the a7iii the one HDMI port would take up half the damn body. They'd be much better off adopting a usb-c port seeing as usb-c is just as good (if not better in some ways) as hdmi for everything you'd be using it for on a camera - and it's a tiny port

Hi Daniel, the GH5 is a mirrorless camera and it has a full HDMI port. If you work with external devices enough, you begin to appreciate full HDMI and SDI.
@danielarmstrong2144

@@vistek hi vistek, the GH5 should also ditch hdmi for usb-c as it's a much better solution for video output ports. The gh5 is also larger than the a7iii despite the a7iii being full frame and gh5 being micro 4/3 (maybe it's because they wasted space with gigantic ports that don't add much to the overall experience of the camera hmmm) As someone who uses both these cameras with external devices on a daily basis I've never once been bothered by the lack of a full hdmi port on the a7 range, it's very easy to work around and has actually saved my full hdmi cables from getting ruined (the adapters usually take any wear and tear damage instead of the actual cable).

misleading title, but great review nonetheless! Thanks. Now really not sure whether I should pull the trigger on this or wait for the A7s3 whenever that drops. Both would be a big upgrade from my 80d (pricewise too!). Not tempted by the GH5 - being a one-man operation, I need need need good/reliable autofocus.

what is with all these critics of Sony? If you don't like it and you have serious issues that's perfectly legit. But, if you that are afraid of it up setting your Nikon/Canon pillar of strength, buck up and see some great improvements for photography. Stop making worthless ridiculous, petty comments. Grow up!

Move settings from dials to swiping menu gestures so it’ll be “faster”? You’re joking. We have phones for that. For God sakes leave the dials alone if you’re watching, Sony. This guy is high.

does anyone know much about the technical durability of mirrorless cameras like the a7iii with respect to heavy usage and take many thousands of individual photos in a single day? I often need to shoot tens of thousands of photos in a day.... i get by with it rotating 2 DSLRs and know i can replace my shutter every 200,000 or so.... but how would mirrorless cameras like the a7iii deal with this? (taking less photos not an option btw haha).

No all camera fit everyone needs, but for photographer is a very good camera, maybe for videographer is not the best camera. But for the ISO, lots of FPS , image stabilisation on camera , fast and accurate focus is enough to switch from Canon or Nikon to >> SONY. And I can use my Canon lenses too. This is a good camera for photographers.

A guy from Panasonic once told me that the record limit does actually refer to taxes because cameras that shot 30min+ are considered video-cameras and or Camcorders which come with higher taxes. On the other hand when Panasonic released the GH4R it was the same camera as the GH4 but with unlimited record time BUT at the same price range as the GH4. Makes you think ....

Sony is smart and basically offer a body at a much better value when compared to canon/nikon dslr’s . The Problem is that the sony lenses are wayy more expensive, especially since lenses have much higher profit margins. Very smart move
