Difference between fullframe and crop sensors is 1.5 times by diagonal, BUT it's 1.5x1.5 (2.25) by actual area. That's why a7 in crop mode delivers only 24/2.25= 10 megapixels. That means in 4k CROP mode it records 4k from 10 mpx area with no downsampling from 6k, so the quality is worse. But still it's a 4k. With "clear zoom" it does same trick again and goes from 10 mpx to 10/2.25 = 4.7. And for 4k you need about 8 mpx, which are not there.
@radulica
Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's why I don't get why he's saying there's no quality loss - at least for photos, you get 10MP from the cropped version, and the difference is reflected in the file size actually. So it's literally like taking the file and cropping it in post.
@officialtiimo
5 жыл бұрын
There is definitely a loss in quality. On the a7iii, shooting in crop mode changes the data captured from 6k downsampling to 1:1 4k resolution which lowers absolute resolution and sharpness and makes noise more apparent. Clear image zoom, based on my understanding, crops your 4k data an additional 1.5x and interpolates extra data from the pixels that are left and then upscales back to 4K. Meaning, you are no longer shooting actual 4k, you are shooting at sub 4k resolutions (probably around 1440p if I had to guess) which the camera improves somewhat by cramming in extra data that it *thinks* is there in the original scene based on the rest of the neighboring pixels. For what it is, the Sony cameras perform this very well, and the quality loss is surprisingly minimal, but to suggest that there is no quality loss (or even that the loss in quality that does occur isn't noticeable) is simply not true.
@Chwanee
5 жыл бұрын
@timothy totally my thoughts! Though I have a small correction - clear image zoom is 2x therefore it crops exactly additional 2x and now you are actually shooting 1080p which is upscaled and interpolated to get back to 4K.

Does lens sharpness not get taken into account i mean the reason they can do this feature is because some of the lenses are designed for cameras with very high pixel count right? so isn't it possible that if you're using an a7iii instead of an a7riii that there might not be any change to the quality of the photo because of the lower Pixel count? Correct me if i'm wrong.

Awesome video man! A great underrated feature I'm always trying to tell people about. Something else to note I noticed with the a7iii (not sure if this is also true with other models)...When using clear image zoom, you can click the wheel to zoom in and out, and also the front shutter wheel...BUT you can also use the left and right buttons on the wheel. The difference is, using the left and right buttons will give you the smooth dolly zoom effect instead of the incremental zooming with the click options. Just in case anyone out there needs a smooth zoom look while recording.

You can’t use zoom/clearzoom shooting raw photos. It’s very important to mention. I got to know it only because i have the camera. A x3 zoom feature is more useful for photography than video imho, and being unable to use this feature, shooting raw.. for me for example that destroyed the “dream” of cropping x3 to get my 24-70 to reach 140mm of max focal lenght with crop and zoom for photography (shooting raw obvsly). Imagine having a 100-400 and have the possibility to get to 800mm without a x2tconv and shooting raw... i had a blast, but erased cruelly in a moment :(

It does nothing when it comes to having less distortion say when you use a 50. Does nothing to the perspective. I was really hoping it would cause I’m torn myself between keeping my 50 ART or getting a 35 ART. The 50 is too limiting sometimes too tight. It's not really magical. 4k video is only 8 megapixels. The sensor is 24 (or more) megapixels. The camera is simply switching from spreading those 8mp across the whole sensor to a smaller area in the middle of the sensor. On paper there is no quality loss because you're still technically getting the full 8mp resolution of 4k.
@thatsreallyamoon

Idk... I guess it works in a pinch but I hate the idea. I didn't leave behind me sweet M4/3 sensors and lenses to start cropping down from my full frames! I start noticing the quality loss too early :( like I can definitely see some disparity between full sensor width vs. cropped from the same camera a lot of times. But it's very useful regardless. Sometimes its best to get a zoomed shot that's not 100% quality vs. missing it entirely.

I think there is a misconception about the expression "quality loss". Of course there is no quality loss in the section of the picture you are croping. Because you are talking about the very same picture. But of course there is a considerable downgrade in Quality when you compare the cropped piture to the same frame of a genuine Tele-lense. So I would say I am grateful to have learned about these features, but it can also be somewhat missleading. There are no shortcuts!!!
@OliverWolter

After much consideration I came to the conclusion that I might be wrong - somewhat. The crop might indeed be lossles. But how is this technically even possible. Here is my thinking, but I don´t know whether this is right. Anyway, here goes.... The A7 III is naturally 6k and gets downsampled to 4K. Now, If I crop on the sensor to a natural 4K I can do withouth the downsampling. This is how I lose pixels on the sensor without actually loosing any image quality. The crystal Clear thingy is differnt though. I do remember that I somewhere read the expression "cropping on Steroids". In caveman terms, this translates to "cropping, yes - but with a lot less diminishing results". I do even believe this crystal thing was x 2.0. Combined with the cropping of 1,5 it gives you a focal multiplier of 3.0. And indeed with very little adverse effects.

there "is" quality loss. there is also a difference between using crop vs clear image zoom @ a 1.5 crop. its not massive but it is there.

I think you need to be on jpeg mode to use clear image zoom. It does not work with raw + jpeg. I need to check.

The moment you borrow a mates camera to film a mates job because your mate isn't around so you have to cover your mate's ass and google how to use your mate's camera. Thanks for teaching me these cool functions mate. Legendary.

Do you lose DOF when you use crop mode? for example 24 1.4 becomes 36 2.1?
@chrisbrockhurst

yeh you loose a little...
@SamsomiteMight

Aperture stays the same (1.4 = 1.4), but DOF gets reduced due to the sensor size going from full frame to crop.

Good idea, but the focal length does never change when you use crop mode or/and zoom more in, only the image angle changes (like the image anlge of another focal length). This is with the APC-C mode and also with the Clear Image Zoom. The f-number (aperture) will not change and the sensor noise can be bigger, when you zoom in. I don't know how the CIZ works, but it seems like a digital zoom to me.

Question Chris. If I have my 16-35 on my a7iii & I use crop mode, my 35 becomes a 52.5 focal length. Does this mean that it now looks like a 52.5? Or will it still look like a 35, just zoomed in to a 52.5 focal length? Thanks! Love your videos so much.
@chrisbrockhurst

its a digital zoom, so you won't have an added compression or alike. The benefit of doing it in camera and not in post is that you can still zoom/crop further in post if you decide too

Chris Brockhurst so I got really excited but realized it would be the same thing as if I just cropped it. I was under the impression it took away the distortion of the 35mm when you portrait close up and that it changed the perspective but it doesn’t.
