Big fat expensive RF L lenses. Canon had the Sony mirrorless road map to destroy but started out making large lenses like when Sony started 5/6 years ago? GM are getting smaller, faster and better (14, 50 and 70200II are the finest if the mirrorless class and more are coming). That’s future proof.

I am a dual body photographer, A1 + 7M3, will upgrade the 7M3 to 7M4 for several reasons: EVF on M3 is obnoxious, same ergonomics & menu as A1, be able to use APS-C one button punching on both bodies, share the A1 battery grip, be able to do low to the ground portrait orientation shots with one of the bodies, similar AF performance on both, not too big res gap that always made me hesitate now before switching from A1 to M3 (if I am not pressed by time maybe I still swap lenses, with M4 I will not switch lenses again, just switch camera).

I feel similarly about the A7iv. I have the BMPCC4K. But, I wanted a 2nd camera that has excellent autofocus, and 10-bit for post work. I used to shoot with Panasonic, but, they've never really improved the AF to an acceptable extent. And the A7Siii and FX3 are still more than I'd like to spend. Yet, I felt Sony should come out with a mid range 10-bit camera considering that Panasonic has had such a camera for a while in the GH5 and GH5S, and now the GH5ii. When I heard that Sony was coming out with the A7iv, I crossed my fingers hoping that it would come with 10-bit knowing that the autofocus would be excellent. So, when Sony finally announced the A7iv, and verified that it would have 10-bit internal recording, I threw down my pre-order faster than you could say "autofocus". I haven't been this excited for a camera in a long time. I'm first in line at my local Samy's store for snagging the A7iv. Great video. It's nice to hear I'm not alone. (P.S. I have subscribed.)

so so so happy yts finally here Jason after 3.5 years of waiting!!!! It checks all the boxes for me as a photo centric shooter (I dont need the video stuff). I agree Jason unless you have a very specific need for video (get the S line), or high res landscapes/billboard printing or hi end fashion (get the R line) or sports/wildlife pros (get the a9ii/a1 line) then this a7iv is the perfect EVERYMANS camera that can do it all very very well but not be an expert in any one area. They will sell a LOT. this will be like the a6000 when it came out and was top amazon seller for 5 years in a row!!!!! So so happy its actual a reality. Yeah Jason I have been debating whether to go 9II, A1, SIII, or wait for the Aiv because I can't really afford the other 3. The auto focus performance, 33 mp, and the shutter that closes for lens swap out seal the deal for me, plus it's suitability for astrophotography. I need sticky focus for sports ( rodeo, gymnastics) and sufficient MP for portraits, with enough $ left over for peripherals. I think this fits the bill so my pre-order is in place. Nice to see another video from you, it's been awhile!

Been using Sony kit 3 years now, having switched from Nikon. Kept changing, looking for best balance, selling and upgrading: a6500, a7Riii, a7Riv, a9 and just recently took delivery of a7iv. Just sold my a9. Want a 2nd body trying to work out what's best for me. A 2nd a7iv, or a7Siii or a1? I never usually needed the full Res of 61Mp RAW files on a7Riv, so often shot cropped 26Mb to save storage. Pity there wasn't an option to downsample full frame. Also didn't like focusing with my Sony 200-600 lens on sport or wildlife subjects. Generally a9 better, but ergonomics less good, albeit a VG C3EM grip helped the ergonomics with big lenses. I had intended buying an a1, but when a7iv announced I felt it might be enough, provided that 10fps is enough for my sports use. Anyway I bought an a7iv to find out how good it will be in practice (potential junior a1) as I might be able to save Vs buying two a1 bodies. I was a stills only shooter but now hoping to use a7iv as a bridge into doing video too. I have much to learn and feel it's too soon to know what is best route for me until I get more experience with a7iv and see if there are any practical limitations. I do like shooting sports and really appreciated the a9 for ultra fast focus and tracking. Yet to see if a7iv will be enough or if I should consider adding an a1? Like you I never thought the a9ii added enough to justify upgrading. I read about the a7iv limitation of 4k60 in crop mode, but I retained my original a6500 lens - Zeiss 16-70 f4 which might yield an effective 4k60 in crop as an equivalent 24mm option. I'm now well equipped with Sony glass having 12 lenses to pick from so could also use my GM 16-35 f2.8 for crop mode 4k60 for 24mm up. Also that lens is compensated for 'focus breathing' on a7iv - only downside is relative heft of GM 16-35mm full frame Vs Zeiss 16-70 f4 crop APS-C. I feel I need to see what 4k60 limited to crop mode means in real world use terms before I buy anything else (a7Siii or A1). As I said I'm a complete nube to video and know that I have much to learn. Any advice from experienced video shooters would be welcome.

I'm kicking around the idea of trading in my a7riii for this one. The 33mp is a sweet spot with a nice resolution where you can crop when needed but still keep the files to manageable sizzes. Not that 42mp was too cumbersome or difficult to work with, but it's slower going in post compared to my a9. I love my a9 and it's going to take something amazing to pull me away from that one. This is a nice upgrade to the a7iii and you really can't go wrong with picking one up.

The reason I'm going to upgrade is that my A7iii has been used for three years almost on a daily basis and dropped at least twice and is probably gonna give issues this year and I'll start doing video as well, which a newer body with new upgrades will do better. I don't need 40-60 MP, 33 MP is a perfect middle ground of image quality, speed and performance. This is even more of a jack of all trades than A7iii was! Higher res should make a decent choice even if you do some landscapes.

despite everything, 2021 is a great year for camera. Nikon hits back with something that many people would still be keen to talk about in the next 5-10 years. It simply is a milestone product. Well maybe not on the level of say the D series which won them back the market coz I am young and not into cameras for those days. (their pre-order is now 10 times their production capability meaning theoritically you cant get one for at least 10 months.) With the A7m4 Sony nails the crown of what A7III achieved 3-4 years ago, which was such a huge hit to the entire market and probably led to all the happenings in the last 3 years. So, end of day, I'm happy that we're all starting to see the light at end of the tunnel. needless to say I'm waiting on my A7m4 as well.

With overheating, my concern regarding any camera (canon R5 for instance) are the actual temperatures. All components have tolerances and if you exceed them the life span will shorten. You might not notice it if you buy new gear all the time, but otherwise an overheating issue will hurt you out of warranty. This is why gaming computers have large fans.

This camera could be as an "supporting" camera to my a7s III, but the a1 could be a "replacement" to my a7s III. Why? I need x1.5 crop mode in both macro 4K and birding, and I need access to 4K@120fps. x1.5 crop already makes 200-600mm into 900mm lens, then you add a x2 teleconverter and you're at 1800mm. Now make a clear image zoom and you're standing at 2700mm and "near" 4K! I think I might need to wait for a9 III for a cheaper option than a1. The a1 still deserves its price to my opinion but just can't afford it at the moment and need to buy lots of lenses.

Exactly, it got so many updates I was waiting to arrive on the A7 line - Sony's new menu system - the deeper grip - the new improved dials - and all of this with a new BSI sensor with a resolution sweet-spot 33Mpix Yeah, the price could have stayed at $2k, mainly because it does not bring any revolutionary tech, but it's not overpriced, just not a bargain.

I’ve been a Canon shooter for many moons, I did try the original a7 but didn’t quite gel, looked to upgrade from 5d mk4, so it was a choice between the R6 and the Sony a7 mk4, I literally tossed a coin..there would have been no contest if the R6 had 24+ megapixels..anyway I’m enjoying learning the new menu system, it is amazing..time to sell some gear me thinks.

Congratulations J it looks like an outstanding camera. I also pre ordered the A74 to pair up with the A1 mainly because its better in low light. I had to wait for it to drop but i'm happy with what i see. Great video and keep up the great work.

Hi Jason......it is here, and I have spent the entire day with this camera. This is NOT your average upgrade from the Sony A7 III. This thing is a beast. It has so many features that I downloaded the manual, not just web'd it. This is going to take time to learn, time for you to get a new video up on the settings for this monster !!

It's on my list. 1. I'd like to see real world quality differences in the final video output (or is it negligible?). 2. What does it mean to shoot S35? - Do I just move back a few steps or does it mean "get a wider lens?" - I will need to check this out with my A73

Pre-order done . . . Sold my A7iii because I kept having focus issues shooting field sports - mostly soccer. I hope I can master this camera like my old Nikons. They may have not been the best but I could get the shot knowing the system so well. I look forward to getting that kind of comfort with this new A7iv.

Jason is a great photographer and content creator but he didn't touch on the new MENU system ? I've had the 6000, 6300, 6400 but my, go to, is, my A7 III for 3 years now. I've had the A7IV for 2 weeks and for me the menu system is "different" but not a game-changer. You will still need a similar amount of time to get familiar with the new menu compared to the older menu. I don't get all the hype about the new menu. The A7IV Camera is AWESOME, the menu is improved but nothing to "write home about".

A really cool feature is when you change the dial to video. The menu is a video menu. And when you go to stills its a stills menu. Including the quick menu. And all with touch screen ability. But for now i am staying with my A7r lll.

I’m not sure how many actual working professionals are here but if you bought a7iii the year it came out and are a working professional, your shutter count should be high up there which means that you’re already for for replacement. Might as well upgrade camera to a7iv

In the uncompressed raw file settings we have option for just 6 fps which isn't not great in my opinion if you want to use for sports shooting , they give us 10 fps but just when we use electronic shutter and mechanical shutter , if we want to get high quality raw file we will have options for just 6 fps as I said above.

Hi Jason, I guess you are living way further in the future. For your hashtags you described the Sony A7IV as the A7'VI'. That will take a couple of years before we will see that one released...

I might get the a7iv. I doubt I'd sell my a7iii as there are couple of times I'd want second body instead of having to change lenses often during the day. The a7iii was a game changer and to be honest it still meets my needs perfectly. The new model will sell well and the price to features are definitely worth it but Sony now have competition that didn't really exist when the a7iii was released. I sense most sales will either come from a7iii users wanting to upgrade and those with a1 who want 2nd body. I do think they might convince some users of our brands to switch to Sony, partly based on the price and features but more so on the lenses available which is something Nikon and Canon are still behind on (third party especially).

Ideal partners will be A1 + A7IV for me. Reality now will be A7RIII + A7IV for me.
