That’s because guys who shoot small things from far distances with big lenses are a very special breed. We are subject to a very unique set of experiences and challenges that most other camera operators out there aren’t even aware of, so if you don’t get your reviews from a wildlife photog, your not getting the whole story.

I think many people agree with you on the flipout screen. I feel like KZitem vloggers have infuenced camera companies. The Panasonic S1H and G6 are a good compromise but honestly the best are the Fuji X-T3 or Nikon Z9 which tilt vertically and horizontally and less "fiddly".

Thanks for the review, Ryan. I'm waiting for my Sony a7siii to show up, and have been doing a lot of wildlife photography and some videos with my a7sii thanks to the pandemic. I only have the Sigma 100-400 so it's been challenging to get satisfying shots of sparrows that aren't house sparrows, and birds in flight. I will say though, I've definitely been leaning on APSC mode and have enjoyed 120 fps as much as you have, so that is actually an "annoyance" to me too :) The benefit of the flipout screen I definitely can see being completely lost on someone who primarily does wildlife... I do other types of filmmaking too, and being able to flip that screen without having to hook up an external monitor every time is definitely going to be a huge help. I can comment on the other stuff but I don't have too much to say, except for one more thing. Have you seen the videos by Gerald Undone and Philip Bloom concerning the dual ISO? The ISO supposed to switch to the other processor 4.33 stops above the native ISO for the picture profile you're using. So you can go up to 10,000 ISO, and the noise gets iffy, but then up it to 12800, and suddenly it's very clean, and 16000 is pretty good too. That's what they've said anyway. I don't have mine yet.

Well done, balanced and credible use case review, Ryan! “Sony being Sony” says it all.👍 Good point about auto-iso shutter half-press display issue, a real annoyance when cam “hides” value until last minute when it might be too late to make changes. Odd thing the spot focus front/back focus issue; wonder if the cam would show same type of error when in manual focus mode using focus peaking. Clever coffee steam/cam overheating trick😁. (Wonderful nature footage.)

Thanks, Paul. Yeah it’s an odd issue that I’ve never seen before. I almost didn’t get off the Hermit Thrush photo in the leaves because every shot was being back focused to the leaves behind it. Then it kept happening, like with the ducks on the pond I missed some of the best looks from it. I’m willing to let one or two of those be explained by missed focusing on my part, but not in the numbers that it was happening and for slow moving or stationary subjects. I know I have more skill than that!

This is a different and refreshing review that gives an interesting perspective. If I understand well, you focus manually (04:46 Autofocus) and the birds that are slightly out of focus are not because of the AF. It is a pity that AF is not reliable enough for wild-life video shooting. Tony and Chelsea Northrup found that the canon R5 and R6 was outstanding for wild-life photography, focusing on the bird even before the human had detected there was a bird at all ... but then there are the video recording limitations on those cameras. Anyway, what would be the factor that would make you buy a "cinema" camera? I am personally hesitating between the upcoming Canon C70 and the Sony a7sIII for shooting dance and moving bodies with a moving camera.

Solid review, Ryan. It’s funny you mentioned your FS5 since I have just been revisiting mine these past few days because even though I have an A7R4, I really do enjoy the smart/pro features of the FS5 (like variable ND, XLR inputs, preroll S&Q, customizable log profiles with very efficient codecs and energy usage, relatively light weight and compact build, etc) and the dynamic range is unbeatable. So you still use your FS5? Also, I was thinking Sony (or third party if possible) should capitalize on the smart hot shoe and produce a 5” monitor that could be mounted onto that smart hotshoe and perform identically to (or better than) the built in lcd screen, providing a larger, reversible display that allows control of the camera without the hdmi cables and hassles. What do you think?

Good review. I suspect you are likely in a pretty small minority when it comes to the flip out screen, though. Especially considering that the camera was always meant for video first. Many Sony users had been begging Sony for YEARS to just steal the screen from the GH4/GH5, and that’s essentially what Sony did. Do you ever flip the screen out and reverse it to the “closed” position but with the screen side facing out? It can’t be angled in any way when it’s like this, but it at least aligns the screen with the lens. (I’d also add that your difficulty in previewing files on your computer is definitely an issue with the computer, not the camera. I’ve had no problems quickly previewing any of the h.264 codecs on my 2yo PC. I can double click a file and play it instantly using Pot Player. And I’ve had no problems with the files in Premiere. The HVEC h.265 files have proven a bit more cumbersome, but still work for the most part.)

I'm willing to accept that I might be in the minority. However, I think at least some of those people who desire a flippy are just parroting what their favorite KZitemr says and haven't thought through how much it changes the experience. I used to be one of them until I bought the Canon 80D and realized it's a problem. I also owned the GH5 but I didn't film wildlife with it. For general purpose video, the flip out screen is much less of an issue. That's why I wanted to express my frustration here because I'm coming from a viewpoint that the generalist KZitemrs don't consider and is not often heard. I did try and use the screen as you suggest, but the problem is that you basically have to live and die on that hill. When the action picks up and you need to change your height or position quickly and now require an angled screen, having to swivel out that display and twist it at the same time not only loses your orientation looking through a very magnified telephoto image, it also eats time away when it’s most precious. Thanks for your input on the file situation, I wanted to make sure I pointed out in the video that I was using a Mac and an older one at that so that people would understand that my experience there might not be universal. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. Have a great weekend!

Thanks! I agree, it’s the end of the line if they put these flip-out screens on the photo-centric cameras. Yes, being able to monitor yourself in front of the camera without extra gear is neat if you need it, but it’s ruining the experience for everything else in achieving just that one thing.

RE: hard to playback video files and having to use proxy files. Did you try to choose 10bit 4-2-0 color space in the camera settings? That should make a huge difference for playback. Very interesting takes, and much more revealing in some areas than most reviews (can't tell you how many people love this new screen idea, it seems everyone is a vlogger or something). One thing I had no idea was that really interesting A99II screen articulation system, looks really cool. I was wondering though, could the screen not be used simply closed in it's placed thus making the view in line with the sensor pretty much? Or is the issue that you wish it also have vertical sliding articulation so you can look at the camera from above with more ease without having to flip the screen out as you now must? Also have to agree with those locking rotary knobs. What on Earth is the point of that? Are they that slippery where if people touch them, they spin out? Many other cameras I've used, these dials are fairly well dampened. That locking mechanism looks like a serious point of failure for no reason it seems. Loved the actual footage btw. Do you find 12MP to be something you can't live with? I know lots of folks that say high resolution is paramount in virtually all professional applications (like yours). Do you have any thoughts on the photo performance since the making of this video?

Good review. BUT I can't agree with you on the screen. i use it for wildlife and find it really useful, especially when the subject moves to one side. Normally I am filming in a stationary hidden location and if I move the animal will fly/ go away. So being able to move the camera while still rotating the screen so that I can clearly see the subject without moving is SUPER helpful. One last thing- which is really annoying - for all PAL region users - this cam can only record till 100p (and not 120p) at 4k and 200p (and not in 240p) in S&Q HD. This is very unfair.

Thoughtful review. Curious to know more about the AF issues. Maybe its just the 200/600 but will have to check. I agree in regards to the flippy screen and aligning with the lens. Major annoyance. Only good for vlogs in my opinion. In terms of the ISO performance I wonder if the dual ISO is a real thing and if you have tried it to see if the files clean up dramatically and at which point. Say at 16000 compared to 12500 Thanks for your honest review
@RyanMenseWildlife

Yeah, that flippy screen... The design they chose sacrifices good usability for a majority of the time just to be able to selfie shoot. Even that’s hard to understand because I can’t imagine a lot of people want to pay $3,500 for their vlogging cam? And everyone else who has a need to view from the front are probably using 5+ inch monitors to do so. The dual ISO is real for video, it’s four stops up from whatever the base ISO is in the Picture Profile chosen. For photos with a base ISO of 80, that means the switch would happen at ISO 1250 if it follows the same rule. Not really an advantage at such a relatively low number. I never really tested it out to see for photos unfortunately. I should be getting the camera back on loan sometime next month and can check it out though.

The reality is you should be looking at video-class sticks with a good fluid head. Minimum I'd suggest for the a7S III/200-600 combo (which I own) is something like an Ikan GH06 combo, which is basically a cheaper version of the Sachtler equivalent (Ace, etc.). Otherwise, it's just really, really hard to stabilize things that aren't landscape stills on a timer.

Depending on the shot it could be scaled up from 1080 to 4K as well causing some softness. Or punched in on the 4K footage. Normally this would be a 1080 export but because of the way KZitem differs in applied compression between 4K videos and 1080, best practice says to always upload as 4K regardless.

Well it seems to me that lot of your thoughts are more a review of how you personally use the camera and how the camera works against or with your own personal expectations. You even use the term "major annoyances" . Annoyance is not a technical term for camera feature, its a description of your emotion. I came away with this video, knowing more about you and your expectations than the camera itself. If that is the video you intended to make, than that is fine. If you wanted to make a review of the camera, I think you didn't make one. So I suppose much like you had expectation about how camera should work and than you got disappointed and reported that as annoyance, I was expecting review of the camera and was disappointed to get specific use case scenario or a particular person. If you know what I mean? That being said, there are some useful things I took away from your video. Too many to list, in between your personal preferences, but still useful. Thanks. I would not call it review, though. Maybe along the lines of "my impressions or experiences shooting using Sony a7S III for Wildlife Video and Photography". Just my 2 cents. Greetings from Croatia.

Yeah, that sounds like a successful review to me, but I understand your point about the framing of the content. 🙂 General reviews aren’t very helpful when I’m on the other side of things, I’d much rather hear the personal experiences because it brings context to the good and bad. And that way everyone can base their own needs and past experiences off of what I say to determine if it applies or not. Thanks for chiming in with your respectful thoughts and sticking through it.
