Great video! Did you use grey or white card for Manual WB? Which one would you recommend?

The videographer in who shot this reel used the palm of their hand for white balance. Overall, grey cards are preferred but the difference between using a grey or white card is pretty marginal.

@@backscatteruw Thank you for your reply. Also, do you have a video about Sony FX3? I could not find it.

Do you even use a redfilter and then do the wb?

No filter, just a custom white balance. That is what makes it so special.

Awesome, I just bought my Sony A7S III and am just waiting on my housing and ports to arrive. Was this camera using the latest 2.10 firmware update? I've seen some info on other channels about a manual white balance issue when underwater. I hope it's been resolved. Your video looks amazing!

Stoked for you! We were running firmware 2.0 on this trip, as 2.10 came out while we were on-site. We experienced zero color or white balance issues during the dozens of hours we shot during this trip. We'll be testing the new firmware soon, too.

What focus setting did you usually use while on video ? And what focus point ? I'm using A7R4 with canon 15mm. thank you

We shot this using continuous autofocus, with the Zone AF mode. We would just move the focus area (which is pretty large) to a different quadrant or part of the frame depending on where the focus needed to be.

Hard to say exactly without seeing your clips. You can send us examples and any questions you have to info@backscatter.com and we will help you out! In general, if using lights make sure to fill the entire frame with your lights when capturing the white balance color. If you are balancing to ambient light with lights on, then they will appear overly red in your footage.

Incredible footage! 1. You’re filming on 60 fps for the slow motion? 2. Does this camera film 60fps 4K? Thank you guys for sharing!

Thanks! All filmed in 4K 60fps. The camera does up to 4K 120fps.

This is our new favorite video lens combo with Sony full frame mirrorless cameras. Superb sharpness, complete zoom range, and pretty compact overall. The only other lens you need is a 90mm for macro.

Some more questions for you! In this video clip you did a shot of the Jelly from underneath (@37s) beautifully capturing the surface. How are you exposing for this shot and doing the manual white balance? Do you use a card or slate? Do you white balance prior to pointing the camera up? I have tried putting a white patch of vinyl on my fins but it's not working too well and my footage comes out overly reddish when manually white balancing to the vinyl. My latest video with the Sony A7S3 kzitem.info/news/bejne/pZyA1GWlfoKil20

Quick, possibly stupid question... When using the manual white balance with video lights, do you turn the lights on, then take a white balance, then proceed to shoot? I've just been using the auto white balance with my lights on and then using the manual white balance without lights. Here is a recent video I took of a local wreck, this was shot using mostly manual white balance without lights. The shots with lights were auto-white balance and the colors were slightly off. I am using Sony Picture Profile 8 I believe. kzitem.info/news/bejne/l5WLsIave3WgiIo

Good question! You do want to execute the manual white balance with the lights on. You are balancing to the lights themselves so that they do not appear overly red after compensating for the ambient light color without them. That's pretty much what the auto white balance process you are doing is achieving, too, just with less user control and the potential for the color to adjust on its own. Great work on your video!
