Sony's new A7II has added 5-axis in-body image stabilization, a first for a full-frame camera. How does it improve upon the Sony Alpha A7, and what are the new features?
For a non english native speaker your accent and pronunciation are really helpfull. Great review too! What a camera! Thank you Jeff

Hi Jeff. I know this video is a few year's old now. But you made some really good points about the Sony a7 mk2. I've alway's used Nikon Dslr cameras in the past. 4 weeks ago i sold all my Nikon gear and moved to the Sony mirrorless cameras i got the Sony a7 mk2 and its an Amazing camera. I know there is a mk3 now but for me the mk2 fits my needs and work. The in body stabilization really is useful after using the Nikon D750. I'm very pleased with the results the Sony a7 mk2 gives me. Great video Jeff. Thanks for sharing with us. 👍👍👍📷📷

Great video -- nice to-the-point, no-fluff, and informative presentation. Before watching this video, i was confused as to why the benefits of IBIS is talked about in terms of "stops of image stabilization". Thanks for clearing that up for me.

jeff, Currently using the a6000 that does the job very well. Looking to go full frame in the near future to have a 2 camera setup for events, weddings and such. With the a7ii being 24mp would there be any reason for me to even look at the a7r?

Shane Truesdale Hi Shane, great idea using the full-frame A7mkII to complement your A6000. The A6000 has lots of strengths and the full-frame lenses can double your available focal lengths, i.e. you 55mm f1.8 on the A7ii becomes an 82.5mm lens on the A6000. Very handy. A7MKII vs. A7R . . . realize their is only a slight increase in definition with the additional pixels. It sounds like a lot, but it is no more improvement than going from a 12mp camera to an 18mp camera. Pixels are the tool of marketing. There is so much more than pixels to make a photograph. However, the bottom line is: how do you use your camera. In Wedding photography, pixels and resolution are just not very important. I remember in the old days when I needed to use a "softar" filter to blur the resolution so the pimples, red marks, fine hairs and wrinkles weren't so patently obvious. Wedding photography is more about getting good results in low lighting and shooting fast, both of which are strengths of the Sony series. With the 5-axis image stabilization, subject movement is going to limit you rather than camera blur. Now for landscapes on a tripod, the A7R has a slight advantage. Bottom line, go for the A7MkII, you are going to love it!

Enjoyed your take on this camera. Very informative and a nice presentation. I have recently sold my Nikon D7000 and purchased the a6000 which I have really enjoyed. However, I have my sights set on the A7 or A7ll for my next camera and looking for information and insights on them both. I appreciate the information you have provided as well as the sample shots. Thanks!

GENO Hi Geno. First, thanks. As far as between the A7 or A7 II, since you already have the A6000, I would recommend the A7 II. Yeah the full-frame is nice, but the 5-axis in-body image stabilization is really the kicker. I recently returned from a European River Cruise and the A7 II got me some shots in several churches that would normally have required a tripod. Bump the ISO, slow it down to 1/4 or 1/15th of a second and you are golden. And the blacks are black even at 3200 iso. I am super pleased with the A6000/A7 II as a combo! IMHO

Jeff Kahn Thanks Jeff. I will indeed take all that into consideration when time to buy. Like you, I think the 5-axis stabilization is a great selling point. I also just read where Sony has introduced the A7rll which looks to be an amazing camera too. I think it boasts 42 megapixels, 102,400 iso and back illuminated sensor which sounds like it will have incredible low light sensitivity. At any rate, I appreciate your suggestions and look forward to more vids from you.

Thanks Squarehead. I generally avoid posting images on the web. I had several images stolen early on and have been reluctant to post much since. I post my travel and family photos on Facebook, and that is about it. I prefer to see them properly printed too to insure the image is consistent. Monitors are hugely variable.

Jeff Kahn Have you tried 500px? Their website runs a javascript plugin that makes it impossible to download the full resolution files, so the worst someone can do is print-screen capture the standard resolution images off of their display.

Thanks for this video Jeff. Two years on, it seems the A7ii is still an excellent proposition. New cameras like the Fuji XT2, D500 or the Olympus em1ii are speed demons, great for sports and wildlife shooters, but for people like me who tend to take one shot at a time, landscape and architecture in reasonable light, they offer me features I will rarely need. The A7ii gives me everything I require and a FF sensor at a very good price. What is your main workhorse camera now?

Thanks for the input on your opinions. I have been using my Panasonic MFT system the most when I travel, but I am still quite happy with the A7m2 and A7Rm2, and really the A6500 too. It just depends on how much space and weight I am ready to carry around. And how much money I am will to risk to theft or breakage during travel. They all are getting so good now!

Have you tried using adapters for canon lens not the metabones but the cheap ones. Im a canon user am planning to buy a7ii body only and a cheap adapter for starters while i work my way till i can buy zeiss lenses. Does the 5-way axis still work on cheap adapters?
@jkahnfilms
9 жыл бұрын
Nelson Elemos Hi Nelson. I have invested in Sony FE lenses rather than keep my excellent Nikon lenses because I don't like fiddling with adapters. You lose a few automatic features like autofocus. I have heard that the less expensive adapters work as well as the expensive ones, but do some googling for advice on adapters. You might also want to check the comments section in Sony A6000 and A7 tested, and evaluation of Metabones Adapter. Some viewers had some excellent input.

The A7 mII is a worthwhile improvement on the A7, especially the In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS). But ultimately, it depends on how you use it and the cost/value ratio for your needs.

Come on, saying the 16-35 F4 zeiss zoom lens becomes the equivalent of an F2 lens is just misleading. That's like saying that a 5.6 lenses becomes an f1.8 when I use the tripod!
@jkahnfilms

Nelson, you have a valid point. I was thinking of the shutter speed and hand-hold ability of the camera during slow shutter speeds. However, this doesn't equate into a reduction of depth of field, which is the other usual purpose for a fast lens. The in-body stabilization would not help with shallow depth of field while taking a family photo, for example. Thanks for your input!
@neversinkoutdoors

Jeff Kahn For what it's worth, your conclusion also assumes a static subject, since it clearly cannot equate to an actual reduction if f-stop if what you're shooting is moving!! Thanks for the review, very helpful!

+René Müller It's made by Commlite and has been on ebay. I don't see any retailers with it yet, and it is still quite new. I don't know why it wouldn't work with the Tamron and Sigma, but I haven't tried it yet so I am just speculating. If it works well, I am sure more information will surface!

No, this was the A7 update. I now have used the A7s mkII and the A7r mkII, and while all three share the same IBIS, they all have their unique advantages. Still, for the price, I continue to think the A7 mkII is a game changer and set the stage for the other two mkII's success!

Haha, very funny. There is at least one camera maker, albeit primarily video cameras, mostly made in America, the BlackMagic cameras. Granted they use a lot of foreign components. I tried one and all reports are they are excellent, with good support and worthwhile firmware updates regularly. It was a bit advanced for my needs so I sold it and I use my Lumix GH4 instead. There may be more that I am not familiar with including Red Digital. I think all the majors build parts mostly in lower cost countries. Too bad. I guess that is the tradeoff for the low prices we enjoy.

OK an IBIS is a game changer for Sony and yes all cameras should have IBIS - to save on cost on lenses and weight and size. good points - thanks for video. Most Purists say no need for Auto Focus and no need for IS :) of course IS/IBIS makes sense - glad Sony did IBIS - do not expect Fuji to ever do an IBIS body - to many Purists in that camp. However Sony will never give us Touch LCD :) - when the rest of the world uses Touch LCD every day with their phones - and yes with their Sony cell phones also - On durable materials in bodies - Sony is pumping out so many bodies that one only needs for his A7/A7r/A7s/A7m2 to last a year or so :) and yes Sony has only created 2 Sony G branded FE lenses but 4 A7 bodies - So you are right the A7 is a good deal as the 70-200mm F4.0 has IS and the kit lens has IS and the Zeiss 24-70mm F4.0 has IS etc. but yes the 35mm and 55mm will benefit - however supposedly Sony have a 35mm F2.0 Sony branded lens with IS in 2015 - I will still wait for A7m3 - and yes tracking AF still needs to be improved to match the Nikon D750 or D810 - and Sony needs a heck of a lot more lenses to get more professional photographers to move to the A7 series for their prime camera - I think some Pros could now benefit from the A6000 as a backup for some shoots - So a decent update but still has a way to go - but yes cost quite decent - if the A7s is taken out of the mix

Quick question A7 MII or Fujifilm X-T1?
@jkahnfilms
9 жыл бұрын
wow, that is a tough question to definitively answer. On one hand, the Sony A7 II is an incredible, small, full-frame camera. The lenses aren't small though. And the best lenses aren't cheap, but they are very good quality. The Fulifilm is smaller, with an arguably larger selection of lenses at the moment. The Fujifilm kit is more compact than the Sony, but then again, it's only APS-C size sensor. If you have unlimited resources and the patience to wait for more prime lenses, the Sony A7 II is a great choice. But for the time being, I don't see myself fully abandoning the Fujifilm for most of my paid work. Both are excellent choices; you would be well served with either. Pick which fits the way you shoot best! And that is my opinion . . .

I agree with Jeff, it depends on what you are using it for. If you're looking for a camera for everyday use, either would be a great option. If noise quality, versatility and in-body stabilization is important to you, go with the Sony. If price and lens selection (with autofocus) are more important, go with Fuji.
