It's good to see a ton of option, but it would be ccol to have some real word examples too. I keep hearing the word "basic" and it takes 40 minutes to explain. lol These could easily be 5 minute videos for each function. When I get mine I'm just gonna take it out, with the manual, and give everything a go and see what works.

@@paulmitchellphoto No worries at all, and you were right I should have added the navigation... The reason I didn't if you are curious is because the concepts build off one another and if you skip ahead stuff might not make sense depending. Then I get questions that really were covered in the beginning for example, so I was trying to limit that. In any event this type of video should really have chapters so if you come back it's easier to find something you may have forgotten etc... All the best and thanks again d for the very kind words :)

Question: is there a way to change the focus area when using Clear Image Zoom, or to set up different focus areas for CIZ? It always seems to default to wide whenever I switch CIZ on - especially birds on a salt marsh, where the marsh grass in the background is higher contrast than the subject.

You can set something up where you will be standing so the camera is pre-focused correctly, or you can record 4k video and snag a screen shot for a selfie portrait really quick which I find the easiest way, if I don'[t need a super high resolution photo file. Lastly you can ask somebody to take the shot for you...

Easier said than done if you want you and the product to be in focus at the same time. You will need to move back from the camera and stop the lens dow to about f/5.6 to f/8 I would say. If your face is in the scene the camera by default will stay locked on that unless you cover it. You can turn off facial recognition and then the camera will focus on whatever is closest in the given focus area you have selected.

When you set the camera to AF-C and center, and say the focus locks, I don't understand what you mean? Is it that the focus distance locks? Or is it that the camera will continue to adjust focus distance keeping whatever object you had locked on in focus? Or is it locked on a point on the screen, meaning that if I had center focus, and I point at something else, the camera will then focus on whatever is now at the center of the screen? There are several factors which could be locked, so which one are you talking about?
@Jason_Hermann
2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's a bit confusing based on the words I used, sorry about that... In AF-C is not really locking on anything but continuously focusing. So if there is a face it will sort of appear to lock on the face and track it if within the AF area used even if the face moves. It's really just constantly focusing though on what is closest to the camera and/or depending if you have facial priority on that will over ride. AF-S will actually lock the focus point to a given spot if you hold the shutter button down half way. You can then move the camera or subject and the focus point stays locked until you take photo or release the shutter button.
@fearlessleader1477

@@Jason_Hermann What I want to do is have a focus rectangle in the center of the screen (or viewer) and focus the bird that I see in that rectangle and the rectangle changes to green, then I can fully press the shutter button and take the picture. Or just click the shutter and focusing and taking the picture completes in one action. Or I can re-point the a6700 again so that a different bird is in the rectangle and focus on that other bird in the rectangle which remains in the center of the screen. Just focus on the center of the screen in a dumb fashion, nothing fancy, no tracking.
@Jason_Hermann
Ай бұрын
@@fearlessleader1477 So you should try AF-S for the focus mode and Center Fix area which gives you a box int he center, or you can use Spot area which has small, medium, and large size boxes to chose from, and you can move the box around if you want. Center just stays in the center. Does that make sense? In addition you can set the touch operation to touch focus, and that will allow you to touch the screen in whatever spot you want and it will leave a box there as your focus area until you cancel the touch.

When you have a registered face, will the camera in c-af tracking mode prioritize that face? Thinking when recording my son playing soccer, whether that alone is good or if i should rather stick to tracking af and select him manually?
@Jason_Hermann
6 ай бұрын
I would try both methods and see what works best. I never actually used facial priority in a sports environment myself as I just prefer tracking the subject with a limited AF area of my choosing depending on the scene. It's more of a traditional method, but I would like to try the face priority method at some point... I feel like it would be better for slower speed where it's like a group of people standing around sort of thing, but again I need to test that out in the real world sports environment to know for sure. Hi Jason, thanks for this, it’s helping me a lot! I have a question if I may. Just got my A6700 and it’s my first Sony, I just can’t seem to make the AF works well on wide area mode. The situation is filiming real estate, I need a continuous moving take, and I need it to be in focus most of the time when I’m turning the camera from one side to the other, but it gets really lost and most of the shot ends up out of focus. And don’t know what to do anymore since I tested different speeds for focus shit and transition.
@Jason_Hermann
10 ай бұрын
Hey there and thanks for the kind words :) By your question it sounds like you are walking around the house and letting the camera focus on whatever it wants using wide area? That is not the way to go for real estate! You really want to rain that focus area in to a smaller zone or possible even manual. The camera by default is going to focus on whatever is closest to the camera, unless it sees a face and you have facial recognition ON. So knowing that is very important when it comes to real estate photography in particular. I would suggest using center focus area to help limit what the camera focus's on based on what you are aiming at in the center area. I think that will help you out a lot and also slowing the focus transition speed, and sensitivity down a bit may help...

@@giancarlocipolla4254 Anytime and it takes a lot of practice also.. I've heard a lot of real estate photographers shoot at f/8-f/11 which does help limit the depth of field play as the focus changes. Downside to the higher f-stop is the ISO will need to be higher which is why you want all the lights on in the house and blinds open for sure 👍 It depends on what you are doing though, because I would want to highlight some details in a house with some depth using a lens at a lower f-stop of f/1.8 for example. A feature detail b-roll type of clip is what I am thinking.

Focusing on something and then reframing in AF-S, means the focus does not change during the re-framing part. If you are in AF-C it will focus the whole time you are moving the camera around. Anybody here experiencing a slight dead-zone in half press of the shutter button? Even in the beginning part of this video ( 6:43 ), I see Jason is having to half-press the shutter button more than once in order to engage it. This is absolutely something which one can get used to pretty fast, but becomes a slight irritation when switching cameras. (A7iv in my case) Can someone confirm this? Is this just button design? or do I have a faulty piece?

I never noticed what you are describing and I have the A74, A7C2 and A6700... So not sure if you are possible more sensitive to the touch of the shutter, or if there is an issue with your camera.

Hi, I've found out that sometimes it struggles to start focusing in video mode when using GM100-400, even when transition is set to 7. Like when you aim at something and it has heavy bokeh and the camera doesn't start to search. Any advice? And thank you for the detailed movie.

Hi Jason, I heard the shutter release sound when you took some shots in your lab so I wonder did you use mechanical shutter type? So far I could not find the way of how to enable the shutter release sound when using Electronic shutter type. Any thoughts and thank you for your helpful info!

I always use mechanical shutter in photography mode unless I need the camera to be silent for some reason or in extremely bright conditions where the max mechanical shutter is not enough. I don't think you can have it make a shutter sound with electronic shutter enabled. I can't find anything in the manual saying you can do that. You can change the silent mode settings though, which might do what you want? helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2320/v1/en/contents/0414D_silent_mode_setting.html?search=shutter%20sound

@@Jason_Hermann Thank you for your response and I agree that we cannot have a shutter sound when electronic shutter (ES) is enable on A6700. From my view of having the ES is to minimize the impact of shooting environment, to let the image processor's horse power to decide the frame rate and to reduce mechanical shutter wear-out. I wish the camera has an option to enable/disable a shutter sound allowing people know whether a photo was taken or not as desired.

I took some photo of people in bycicle come to me and I used single shot (first setting). Super bad result. Probably because the time when I found the focus (soft press) and the time when I shoot was too long and I lost the focus. Can be this the reason? Probably not the best for moving objects

Yeah that was the problem most likely. You want to use AF-C mode with moving subjects and you also want to make sure your shutter speed is fast enough to freeze the action as well.

Jayson, for some reason I and only seeing 2 focus modes on mine AF-C -> Continuous AF and MF -> Manual Focus. I see nothing else. What lens are you using? Does it matter as to the options you are getting? NM… I was in video and photo mode.

Thanks for the great video Jason. Does the subject recognition and tracking work in the AF-S mode too? Edit: I found the answer I was looking for in your other 1 hour plus video on the a6700 menu! Jeez your videos are an amazing starting point for anyone who’s bought or is interested to buy the camera mate. Massive respect 🫡

Need help when I press the center button on the back dial in place of getting the focus point on or off as you show it is taking me to the focus area screen every time. How can I get it to work like you are showing?. What do you have the back center dial set to ? Mine is set to focus area what should it be?. Thanks

Mine is set to Focus Standard and I'm pretty sure yours is the same? The option to move the focus area around only works with some of the focus area modes. The text needs to be up on the screen with the little circle letting you know you can select the area to move it or not... For example Zone, Spot, and expand spot have it, but center fix and wide area do not...
