The Paramount decrees were a punishment after Paramount and other studios refused to stop forcing block booking on independent theatre chains, owning theatre chains wasn't really an issue but it was one asset they could force the studio's to spin-off. It did have the major effect of causing all the major film studio's of the time to basically go bankrupt and sell to bigger companies.

Well first the film studio's haven't been the main component for decades. The film studio's are subsidiaries to either media conglomerates like Disney, WBD or Paramount Global or other corporate owners like Comcast and Sony the only reason the studio's name Warner Bro and Paramount are up front is that they are more well known to consumers than the previous corporate names. We call them studio's but that's honestly like calling Amazon just a book seller it may have been how they once were but that was a long time ago. The other reason is that studio's owning theatre chains wasn't the actual problem it was block booking and blind buying both of which the studio's were told to stop doing but the studios ignored this warning so the government took them to court where the studio's lost and as punishment were broken up. The studio's all basically failed within a decade of this and were bought up by other corporate interests or collapsed out right like RKO (1959), Paramount bought by Gulf and Western (1966) Warner Bros to Seven Arts Production (1966) etc. Streaming is closer to TV the media companies owned the TV channels and own the streaming application but it's distributed over the cable companies cable for TV channels and over the internet through an ISP for the streaming applications.

Don't confuse public statement with reality. They aren't confused about anything. They are fully aware that expenses outweigh revenue. They do not actually care about the company. Businesses are created because the creator wants to make money for themselves. That's the important part. Everything else is pretty much a byproduct of that. Greed is why they don't care if a company goes under. They have to keep paying their investors, cutting executive salaries may cost them said executives, and so they usually just cut jobs in an effort to keep it going as long as possible. In the end, they've made their money and chances are they can get an executive job somewhere else or even start a new business to continue their income if the previous business goes under.

Why? theatre chains aren't particularly profitable and neither are most films. The running costs of a theatre chain are high enough that studio's really won't benefit from owning entire chains. Alamo is also pretty small just 36 theatres across the USA mostly in Texas. For Sony the benefit is that it allows them to potentially get more films in limited release which will help their licencing deals to streamers than if they went straight to streaming.

@@Ushio01if a studio owns all the theaters in a given market (pretty easy if it's a small town with only one or two theaters) they can block all the other studios' movies from playing and then give consumers a choice: see our movie close to you, or either drive 20+ miles or wait 30+ days to see another studio's movie. It used to be that competition between movies was about which movie was "better". Now that competition will be about which movie was even _playing_ where you live.

@@Ushio01 you’re missing the point. Theaters might not be profitable as we know them. But adding a fee on top of already existing Netflix memberships would get butts in seats and boost concessions considerably. For example cheese isn’t something you would think of as a largely profitable addition to a restaurant menu per se but the addition of cheese to the hamburger allowed for an up charge to an already popular item. I mean nobody that orders a cheeseburger instead of a hamburger even registers the extra money they are putting into that companies pockets. But the difference is significant and a it was a massive boom for the industry as it existed previously. If say Netflix takes over AMC and includes perks connected to their theaters to their existing customers based on membership tier do you not think the 80+ million subscribers wouldn’t boost theater goer numbers? Now Netflix can charge subscribers more while also ensuring a reason for them to show up to theaters and also have a sensation to spend on concessions because they aren’t spending money directly on a ticket each time they visit.

As much of an interesting experiment this might be, I don't see how this could turn out as a financially worthwhile endeavour.

I have the same concerns as Dan. What happens if an independent movie, distributed by an independent firm, wants to show their movie at a stuido owned theater chain? That indie film which was produced for very little money, could potentially end up paying a hefty premium to show the movie, and making a profit will be more difficult. And what happens if the studio plays hardball, and forces the indie film producers to sign an exclusivity rights on streaming, or they won't be allowed to show the movie in their theaters? This whole ordeal needs major oversight or the corporations are just simply behave like corporations. Without overshight, they will undoubtedly become monopolies.

I don't think it would be good to go back to studio owned theaters on a national scale. I live in a fairly rural state, and there are probably fewer than 50 theaters in the entire state. I’m also in the Austin area and it breaks my heart, do you think Sony will show random quirky movies like Alamo used to do? I highly doubt it.

@@007Julie It depends on the moviegoers - if a random quirky movie event attracts a large audience and is profitable, they will continue to do them. So we as fans need to do our part to help spread the word and patronize the things we want to see continued

I live in Austin too. I've been going to the Alamo since it was on Colorado St. I hope I'm wrong, but I can't see this going well. I'm afraid it's going to be gradually de-Alamo-ized.

Feeling it as well.. I admit I missed the look of the South Lamar location back when it didn't look so gentrified, but I seriously hope that they don't lose their feel. Corpos can't help but to corp after all.

Alamo is my main theater I attended. I hope this selling does not ruin the quality of that theater that I have come to expect. Particular since the theater I go to has been doing a round of upgrades

I find it somewhat amusing that one of the studios that can't seem to launch a franchise without screwing it up is so heavily invested in the theatrical experience. They like movies, they just don't seem to have a firm grasp on what makes a good one.

I’m not terribly surprised that Sony is sticking with the “traditional route.” Japanese corps are old school. Also, Toho Cinemas, which is a huge theatre chain is owned by Toho, who also make movies.

I def could see Sony releases getting a bigger push before being released to other theaters. Also, could this mean that streaming movies could get theatrical releases if some streaming services make deals with Sony?

Kinda major correction that everyone seems to be forgetting: this is not the first time Sony has owned a theater chain. They actually owned the Loews Theatres chain back in the late 80s/early-to-mid 90s (at one point Sony even renamed the chain to Sony Theatres before eventually reverting back to the original name) before merging it with Cineplex Odeon (who was half-owned by Universal at the time) to form Lowes Cineplex as a joint venture between Sony and Universal. Both studios eventually sold the chain to two private equity firms in 2002, and the chain was later bought by AMC in 2005. When Sony owned Loews, there was indeed a heavy focus put on the films Sony owned or were releasing (to the point that the policy trailer for when the chain was called Sony Theatres even included clips from Sony films).

Sony inherited Loew's when they bought Columbia in 1989 - so yes, this isn't the first time Sony has owned a theater chain, but this is still the first time a major studio has acquired a theater chain since the 1940s. Even Columbia owning Loew's was predated by it being a joint venture between Tristar and Coca-Cola.

@@DanMurrellMovies That is true. I’m just pointing out that everyone is reacting to the Alamo acquisition as if Sony has never had experience with running a theater chain before, when guess what, they actually have.

If Alamo has kind of been the last bastion for theaters for me. It’s now the only place where I feel comfortable spending money because I know it won’t be ruined by talkers which has unfortunately increased in other chains. Hopefully nothing changes.

Just like Regal taking over the Arclights in LA, I'm sure the new owners will not continue with the original policies of the theater. Cell phones and talking at full speed ahead. I miss the Sony theater I went to growing up in the midwest. Loved their intro with tons of great clips set to the Rudy soundtrack.

I just want a nice cinema in town that I can go to and see the latest big release, a classic movie or an event, instead of needing to drive 30 minutes each way to a decent multi-plex. And I shouldn't have to decide between 3 theaters within 1 hour from my house. It's annoying enough to pick a movie and time.

Mate Paramount is over $17 billion in debt how do you expect them to come back from that when their commercial hits are few and far between not to mention their streaming service is a nonstop sinking money pit that put them in so much debt in the first place, if anything expect them to shut down their own streaming service, sell it off or license out what they can to others

I don’t think this is a good precedent. It’s way to reminiscent of the vertical monopolies of the studio era. What’s next? Disney buys AMC?
