When the CD player skips a lot and does not begin reading at the start, the tracking mechanism might be Rusty and blocked. I have successfully restored 2 (I know, it's not much, but I don' t fix lots of stuff) cd players with sony or sony-like Pickups with a Stiff/Blocked Tracking sled motor. Since the laser diode was bright and increasing the current did nothing, I would investigate better the sled mechanism or even the tracking electronics.

A few things of note with these (you probably know but I'll share for those who may not) :D Pre-recorded CDs vs home recorded: often pre-recorded will play, home recorded won't. I believe the speed used to write the CD can make a difference as to whether it will play or not. Another thing is an issue with colour CDs; oddly some Sony players (and others?) these CDs won't play. (I'd assume it's the same problem some of the older PlayStations, had/have where some silver/professional discs work okay and coloured ones won't. This could be one/some of the reasons for it still not working after cleaning. Finally, on occasions the carousel in these multi-CD players can be just a little off; which can affect the reading and playing of a CD. Often the carousel misses the laser just enough for the player to assume there is no disc in the tray spaces Just some of the things that could cause the issue(s) this player has.

I hope I find a CD changer for cheap in the next future, I have always liked the comfort of being able to put more than a disc in my stereo. Unfortunately, my old philips cdc had the magazine mechanism crumble due to the aging plastic.

Dave, Even though you didn't repair this Sony, I did learn about the switches that need to be cleaned. I really thought cleaning switches would do the trick. Especially when, with night vision engaged, the laser appeared to be working .

Just because it is emitting light doesnt mean it is working. Usually it is the refracting mirror that reflects the returning beam is cloudy from smoke or a film on it.

I bought this same unit from a Goodwill for $6 US. It was pretty beat up and dirty. Looked like someone's garage unit. It didn't spin well, needed a new spindle motor which I was able to obtain from a surplus website for about $11 with shipping. Works and sounds perfectly now. Was it worth it? It was for me just for the experience and satisfaction that I was able to fix it.

KSS-150/210 replacement is readily available for cheap, but CD changer's are not worth that much nowadays. Single CD players sell quickly, but bulky CD changer's are hard to sell.

I had the SAME problem with a nearly identical Sony CDP-C305. I was able to make the laser read without skipping most of the time, but after few weeks, it died again. I don't know why, but the lasers in these sony cd changers tend to go bad. I was always able to restore sony cd players, but not these changers, even if they use the same sony laser used in other cd players.
@enricoself2256

KSS150 is not too reliable: it's quite old for a start (late 80's) and today there is a 50% chance it is dead. Can be replaced with KSS-210 which you can find for 10 EUR. The pot on the pickup does not change the laser current, but the feedback read from a photodiode attached to the laser itself. Laser current is driven based on that photodiode feedback to keep a constant output also when the laser starts ageing. Changing that pot is actually a desperate move, it will work for a limited time as the laser is dying and you are considerably accelerating the process.

@@gyrgrls The problem is I pull all these parts and put them in boxes never to be seen again, so why bother. I toss so much stuff, and I am about to take a bunch of junk to the recycle center as I will never use it, and even trying to give away stuff it just sits here collecting dust. Nobody wants this old gear anymore. Some may say, hey that old turntable is valuable. Really? I have a bunch of turntables that were quite expensive in their day. I get like nothing for them. Don't believe the prices on Ebay, many of those are rigged I am sure trying to drive up costs. I wouldn't be surprised if someone sells an old receiver to themself under a different name to generate interest, and then lists it again hoping that some sucker that just saw one sell for thousands will take the bait.

@@12voltvids I hear you. I had that same problem many years ago. I ended up with hundreds of plastic drawers full of parts, and piles of e-waste. around 12 years ago, I finally gave up on it. I need a common part - I order it online. Shipping is cheaper than storage... and melting for copper and gold is too time consuming; we'd be better off spending spare time working for minimum wage part time. NO JOKE!

@@gyrgrls I only do this to kill time. I don't make any money fixing stuff. If I figured out what I make fixing electronics it is probably about 10 bucks an hour at the very most. I do this strictly to make the videos as I make more off the ad revenue than the repairs, but even that has taken a big hit thanks to the IRS siphoning off 30% of revenue, they call it "royalties" and then I have to pay income tax on what it left over. Makes it hardly worth the effort. To see 50% of what I make just vanish is disheartening.

c.d/dvd lasers are a pain, they just die and there is no obvious reason. I've had loads that nothing i do has any effect, even when the laser current is bang on. Is there such thing as a "Dirty laser", the presents of unwanted emmision frequencys that mess up the clarity of reading.

I´m wondering why nobody tries to clean the laserlens from the underside. And parts under it. They get dirty too. I´ve done that with my 32-year old player (Sony CDP-670) and it works again.

@@12voltvids Hm. I can´t believe it. My first attempt was a Playstation (a grey one, from the first Models) and it was not so hard. The frame were the lens and the coils are mounted in, is only screwed down tight. So there is nothing to adjust. I lift that frame a little bit and I could clean the lens from the underside and that cheap little mirror what´s under the lense. And... it works. I have done this to about 50 (or more) other PSXes with success. Than, my well loved CD-player can´t read any disk anymore. I took a look inside and saw that this drive is not so simple... so I lost my courage and put it back together. Some weeks later I thought to myself, I´ve got nothing to lose, right? So I took it apart again and I was suprised how dirty that laser from the inside was. Yes, it was a pain in the ... to get it together again. Otherwise I´ve done way harder things and I think, before throwing something in the bin, try to fix it. OK, I hope my english was´nt tooo bad (it´s not my native language) and best wishes from Germany. I really like your Videos!

@@12voltvids you could have tried tweaking a bit the EF offset or the gains, just to have it working for a couple of hours. I still do not know what is actually wrong in pick-up's when they stop working: laser does not seem to go bad, but maybe the internal optics gets cloudy or misaligned or photodiodes just die ... would be interesting to know. Single beam pickup's (e.g. Philips) seem more reliable than three beams pickup's like that one.

@@enricoself2256 this one is digital if I remember correctly. No controls to tweak like the older ones. There is the laser power and that's about it.
