Chris & Derek, even knowing the lackluster sound output from the enclosed speakers, I bought a CFD-S70 online with the benefit of a special discount voucher. My unit arrived on Saturday. The CFD-S70 performs as I expected. Recording quality on Maxell UR cassettes is a bit better than expected. Playing my CFD-S70 tapes on a good home-audio deck, the sound quality was pretty good and speed/pitch were close to spot-on. My older working boomboxes still perform alright, but I had a specific space in our house where I wanted to use this device, plus the CFD-S70 can play MP3 CDs which my older boomboxes cannot. Thanks for your review!

Several weeks after buying my CFD-S70, I've plugged it into my main living-room stereo system for playing Christmas holiday cassette tapes and CDs. My various home-audio cassette decks need some TLC, I wanted something NIB and this performs surprisingly well for playback as well as for recording. W&F is acceptable and on my unit tape speed is close to spot-on. The FM and AM tuner are acceptable as well. Sonically, the included speakers on this mini-boombox aren't my favorite, but they are better quality than on the Jensen and QFC boomboxes I've tested. Sonically, this is nothing approaching my big-boy 1990s Panasonic RX-DT680, with speaker bi-amplification and a superb tape transport design. But for a mini-boombox you can brand-new today, IMHO the CFD-S70 is a particularly good choice for somebody who wants to inexpensively add CD, cassette and FM/AM capability to their home audio receiver/speakers or for use with (wired) powered speakers.

@@christronicsdereksrandomness36 Agreed re internal speakers. They are pitiful even compared to my old, still-functioning Sony CFD-151 that's in our kitchen. External sound output is very good, which isn't always the case with low-cost boomboxes or walkman players.

Woo!! It _actually_ records pretty decent. I'd say about on-par with the Panasonic RX-D10 that I used to have, but with better treble. I think the reason why the CD started playing at 7:43 when you hit record on the tape deck was because it has Automatic Record/Play, a feature that many of the better cassette boomboxes have. The Panasonic SA-AK220 at my parents' work also has that feature. Basically, if you have a CD in, and you're in CD mode, the boombox automatically starts playing the CD when you press record on the tape deck.

I got this player as it plays MP3 CD's and has a sleep timer. (I like to be read asleep) It worked fine until it didn't. After 3 years it first began to stay in standby mode and wouldn't begin playing the CD's. I had to unplug and re plug the unit several times to get it to work. Soon after it began to insert silent gaps in the playback and soon after that would not hardly work at all. Also, since I would download books on CD and convert them to a MP3 format, if there were more than say 40 tracks on the CD. the player would began the playback at the track it decided was first. Bottom line this is a good player for the money but it only lasted 4 years. I expected more from a Sony.

Tape hiss cannot be totally avoided with cassettes, unless you use well-maintained high-end home audio decks using top-of-the-line blank tapes. Given that other current boomboxes are lackluster, this Sony seems to record well, as well as my old CFD-S33. Sony's user manual states Type I cassette frequency response is 80hz - 10,000 hz. Wow&flutter and signal-to-noise ratio aren't specified. If I wanted a brand-new boombox, I'd buy this one.

@@peacearchwa5103 ahh i see, well i now have a TEAC Auto-Reverse dual deck, with Dolby NR. And it records very well! Been using New old stock Maxell XLII's to record onto. The outcome? Crispy clear sound of the amazing CrO2 tape.
@peacearchwa5103

@@UrOpinionsSucc Yes indeed. Yesterday, I recorded an excellent album (Grover Washington Jr.'s smooth jazz alubum "Winelight") from a CD using an early-1990s Technics deck and a used Maxell XL-IIS cassette, with Dolby-B. The source material had fairly wide dynamic range, saxophone, percussion and synthesizers. The outcome of my recording as you said was amazingly transparent and clear. If you listen very closely at a high volume level, you can still detect a tiny bit of tape hiss but the very best blank tape stock, decks and Dolby can almost eliminate analog tape hiss. In fairness, decks like my Technics and your TEAC have somewhat more sophisticated and quieter electronics than a boombox, and we both were using excellent-quality Type II cassettes (the Sony boombox only records on Type I).
