You guys realize that whatever source you select for zone 2 can be sent to the port and played on every Sonos product in your house. Also the port can be used as a source on the receiver and played with the rest of your Sonos product. I’m currently listening to Apple Music on Apple TV and fed to my roam outside . This is a wonderful design

If you have a sonos port connected to your home theater/stereo system to play over your existing speakers, without this feature you must turn on your amp, switch to the correct input, then grab your phone/tablet and use the app to control sonos. With 'works with sonos', you use your phone/tablet, turn on sonos from the app and your amp will power on and switch to the correct input etc. Saves you from using a separate remote

The only advantage that the "Works with Sonos" certification provides is the ability to control your amp from your Sonos app so you can stream your Sonos content over the home theater system. The issue I have with that is you cannot play the TV content through the Sonos system. You need a separate audio output from the amp to serve as the audio source for the Sonos Connect/Connect Amp. My previous amp had the same issue and my workaround was inserting an HDMI Converter to the TV HDMI out, which provides an HDMI + audio so you now have an audio source for your Connect/Connect Amp. Now I can play ball games throughout the house without turning up the home theater to 11. It's a shame that these brilliant engineers couldn't figure this out by providing one more audio out connect for whatever is playing on the TV. Maybe Zone 3 out will work as the source, that's my next attempt before installing the HDMI converter.

So the "Works with Sonos" feature always requires a Sonos Port device then? Is there a way for the Sony receiver to simply just join the Sonos device network over Wi-fi and then have it be directly addressed by the Sonos app that way?

Hey Michael, Works with Sonos is a certification from Sonos meaning the receiver will power on, change input, and set to a preset volume of choice in correlation with Sonos product. Be sure to use S2 Ports as S1 is not supported for 'Works with Sonos'.

What if you want to listen to your TV content over the Sonos system? Can you use Zone 3 as the audio source for the Sonos Connect?
@RyanBeattie

Zone 3 is an output, not a source. He discussed assigning a Sonos Port to zone 3 @4:32 - if you wanted TV audio to play through zone3, you would connect the line in on your Port to the audio out of your cable box.

I bought an STR AZ5000 ES to pair with a new A95K TV. It would not pair. Sony TV did an online access to check the TV nothing wrong. I was told to call Sony check the AMP. I was told call a dealer to set it or or send it back. They were no help at all. Sending to back.

Is it possible to add Sonos beam gen 2 to sony's ES receiver by wired for the center channel?

Sorry, but the Beam would only work as a stand alone system. However, it would be able to be grouped in with a Sony ES receiver paired with a Port in another room.

I tried this with STR-AZ1000ES. Mostly works but setting the Sonos Port line out to "Passthrough" should control receiver volume but does not. I know I can set the Line Out to "Variable" in the Sonos app but this is not ideal as it still also requires you adjust the volume on the receiver. Did you use "variable" or "passthrough" in the Sonos app device settings for the Port?
@TheHifiguru

When setting up make sure to set the Preset Volume to a comfortably loud level. I set mine to 0dB. This allows the receiver to go to a "fixed" volume and act as an amp while the Sonos controls volume as the preamp.

Sony’s implementation for volume control is subpar. Research the Onkyo implementation for Sonos and their “pass through volume control”. It works great because controlling the volume on the Sonos app actually changes the master volume on the receiver. Much better.

To be clear, this is how Sony implemented it. The newer Onkyo receivers (which are also “works with Sonos” certified) have true volume control of the receiver through the Sonos app. Hopefully Sony can make a firmware update to add this functionality.

I had this exact question. Just setting mine up. I think we have to use pass thru or fixed volume, otherwise the port is sending a low signal level with all the static noise and the AVR amplifies all of it. That variable level thing isn’t great.
