That's the exact same with me! I'm typing this on my Xperia 1 mk3. It's a great phone! I do some photo/cinematography, so that's nice, but it's not the most important thing for me. The phone is really solid, feels nice, as an awesome screen, which is uhh... The only real bad thing, actually. I recently cracked it, and it SUCKS to replace. Apple and Samsung, even Google, it's pretty easy, since there are so many of the phones, shops can easily get their hands on replacement screens. Meanwhile, nobody has Xperia screens, so you have to send it off to a 3rd party company that Sony hires to handle everything for them. I haven't seen too good reviews for them, you'll be without the phone for around 3 weeks, and it's super expensive to replace! Like $300 plus shipping. Just something to be aware of, which you might not think about at first.

Actually, the photos and videos were one of the main features I was looking for and I wasn't disappointed, in fact I was impressed. In a world where every phone uses AI to draw over the images you've captured, I was in awe when I saw how close it looked to real life. No frame stacking artifact, no AI overlay, just pure hardware. One of the only good phones left on the market. 3.5mm, SD slot, current Android, no STUPID front camera cutouts or gimmicks, and a great battery. A lack of any one of those is a deal breaker for me. Skinned Android used to be too, but given the alternatives? I'm the type of person to keep a phone for 5 years or more; my last phone I ended up going to CyanogenMod for a closer-to-current Android version, before finally upgrading to my latest device. If I'm going to get a new phone, I'm gonna want something like this Xperia, where it has all the physical features that I want (read: that SHOULD BE THE STANDARD), and is brand new so has the longest possible service life. Here's hoping that when I'm shopping for my NEXT next phone, it's in an era where Apple hasn't made it a trend to replace your phone's screen with a brain chip, or their new AR headset. For example 4k spend much more power as a compute, battery. The screen is also likely to heat more with brightness. All these add up. It depends from release to release my experience was that the camera is mostly the biggest culprit. The first 4k camera they put into the phone just overheats in a few minutes of starting recording a video :)

With my 10 IV I had overheating problems only after the last updates. Turns out it was Xperia Home - there was an empty App which is just a bug for some reason in the menu and probably causes the overheating because it leads to nothing and the phone tries and tries again to start it or something. Just installed my Nova Launcher Prime and the problem was fixed. The battery even lasts more than almost a year ago.

Literally the only reason I haven't bought an Xperia phone is that there is no option to move the back navigation button to the right like on Samsung. I know Google wants to move away from on-screen buttons and on to gestures, but I like the simplicity, predictability, and practicality of on-screen navigation buttons. Sony Xperia team, if you are reading this, please add the option to put the back navigation 0button on the right in the next OS update. If you do, you have a sale from me I love everything else about the phone. Headphone jack, sd card support, size, no notch. Please just let me put the back navigation 0button on the right. I think you are actually putting a bit too much emphasis on people who take alot of pictures. I have the Xperia 1 IV and I don't really play mobile games and I don't take too many pictures. However the 12GB of ram (great for massive multi tasking & tons of web tabs open), Insane battery life and unmatching color accurate screen works great for my use cases coupled with a HEADPHONE JACK and SD CARD SLOT. I have my important stuff backed up to the SD card, take photos and video to the SD card and I use my headphone jack for audio output in a couple of my cars. The performance of the phone and battery life while having such performance is just nothing short of incredible. The ability to limit my max battery is also nice as I don't charge it past 80% for max longevity. IT still lasts me typically a whole day of usage (which is mostly messaging, email, web browsing and other business focused tasks). The screen works great for remote desktop software like TeamViewer because of how high resolution it can be. As a person who sits at a Triple 4K workstation w/ Dell Professional monitors; I never feel like I am "losing out" on the go as my phone has exceptionally accurate color (I measured with my own colorimeter). The last thing I like is the profile; at first I was hesitant on the 21:9 but after having it, I really love it. Every other phone feels big / bulky in my hand now (my 2nd phone is a Moto G Stylus 5G 2022 model) as well as many older models (like my old LG G7 or HTC 10). It is just amazing how thin it is and how nice the profile is even with a good slim TPU case. As far as the camera performance; I felt like on my model the "basic" mode is more hit and miss vs even my old LG G8 but with a few tuned settings it really takes awesome shots. The video performance has been incredible even at night with zoom and I was able to make some amazing memories over the holiday season. Lots of people talk about "overheating" and I haven't experienced that even one time... It gives me a warning in the cinema mode with high refresh recording when I open the app but I don't even do high refresh recording so I guess it doesn't matter. I have recorded more than 10 minutes of 4k60Hz before without overheating the phone... 4K30Hz or 1080p60Hz does literally nothing at all to heat up the phone... So I feel like this would be more than fine for almost anyone purchasing the phone. I also want to say that the software upgrades have really picked up; my wife has the Xperia 1 III and during her first year with it there were not as many software upgrades. Now both of our phones are getting very regular upgrades so it seems that Sony has stepped up its game in this regard. Anyway just a few (or maybe alot) of words from someone who has used the Xperia 1 IV as my main phone for 8 months now. As a person who has a very busy life; I don't really think another phone would fit my life better than the Xperia.

Xperia 5 MkIII owner here. (That's the lower end model, two iterations ago for those of you keeping score. Sony's naming scheme doesn't make sense.) I can confirm that lots of things about Sony phones are great. I love the aspect ratio, and even the 1440p screen on my unit is very nice. Not as nice as the 1 series, but I can't imagine my battery life would be as good with a 4k display. That said, the camera and video apps do cause overheating, and I have frequent issues with basic functionality such as GPS and WiFi. Also, although I appreciate the greater control Sony's camera app provides, if I'm honest I was probably getting more consistently better shots with my Pixel. I'm not a practiced-enough photographer to properly make use of the bells and whistles Sony included, and the lack of a proper computational "auto" mode is a definite minus for me. I probably wouldn't pull the trigger on another Sony phone but for one thing - I bought a custom made leather wallet folio case for it, and it will never fit any other phone. I'm stuck with 21:9 aspect ratio units if I want to keep the folio, and these are some of the only ones. It'll make the decision more difficult when the time comes, certainly...
